The official music video for Where The Streets Have No Name by U2.

Lyrics:
I wanna run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls
That hold me inside.
I wanna reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name.
I wanna feel sunlight on my face.
I see the dust-cloud
Disappear without a trace.
I wanna take shelter
From the poison rain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name.
We're still building and burning down love
Burning down love.
And when I go there
I go there with you
(It's all I can do).
The city's a flood, and our love turns to rust.
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Trampled in dust.
I'll show you a place
High on a desert plain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name.
We're still building and burning down love
Burning down love.
And when I go there
I go there with you
(It's all I can do). - Hudba
I will never forget this day! I was 15 and I was with my mother. Never been a big u2 fan but believe me if you were there, they had a great presence. I miss those innocent days.Just about everyone was enjoying themselves seemed like there wasn't a care in the world. This was 1987 downtown la. This is what the world needs now.god bless
I always thought it happened in NY.
Getta Stark I love how the police tried to really shut them down. Because it get out of control. And they took the stairs away from them.
So the whole thing is true ? I was never sure if it was just a well edited video .... Did you or yor mum take a picture ?
Funkey Punkey yes man. They played it twice that day. Then I think they were asked to stop.We didn't take a picture because we were doing our shopping downtown that day. We had no idea it was happening till we see people gathering.
This is one of those stories that you'll tell your grandchildren about then show them the video. I've been waiting for years to hear a story from someone who was actually there, Thank you!
This is possibly one of the greatest songs ever written.
Well could be! But I invite you to unearth an American classic song “everything I own” by Bread, lead singer David Gates, in my humble opinion those lyrics are one the best lyrics ever written, those lyrics go deep into your heart, so inspirational...CZcams it and enjoy listening to it..,”everything I own”.
Awesome 👍!

What was it like what did you remember
For those of you wondering if this really went down like this - it DID. It was all over the news, and MTV (back when they actually played music videos) aired it as well. This became the official video - and an iconic moment in the history of music.
an iconic moment in the history of mankind.
2 things...band tried to make it appear that they won the day but they admit...law won and the sign early in video say million dollar hotel inspired Bono to write a movie script and it started Mel Gibdon
why was this an iconic moment in the history of music?

Cute to do a Beatles homage but NOT CUTE to cause a public safety hazard. They should have broke it up if it was not planned. Did they have a permit? Lip sync the music?
@@iamgermane 100% agree with the CUTE part! An absolute ripoff of the Beatles! 🤮
Life in the 1980s was marked by a sense of simplicity and connection as there were no cell phones to distract from genuine human interactions. People spent their time engaging in face-to-face conversations, and the music of bands like U2 provided the perfect soundtrack to this era, captivating hearts and minds with its phenomenal melodies and lyrics, creating a lasting cultural impact.
@@ricovali1897 You're absolutely right! Cell phones did exist in the 1980s, but they were very different from the smart phones we have today. Back then, cell phones were much larger and primarily designed for voice calls, lacking the advanced features, internet connectivity, and touchscreen capabilities that define modern smart phones. It's fascinating how far technology has come since then!
are you chatGPT that escaped from server and get loose in the internet jungle?@@bmariner7319
@@ricovali1897 I think you're missing the point on a technicality. Did the technology of cell phones exist in the 1980's sure. Did EVERYONE in the 1980's possess a cell phone....NO. So, it meant people didn't go around with their heads stuck in a phone. This lead to greater connectivity with people, passer bys. It meant you had a better chance of having a conversation with a stranger then you do today.... I believe the above comment is referencing this truth and the reality of what its meant to society and the individual in general.
@@ricovali1897 In 1991 I was a personal care attendant or "PCA" for a guy who was quadriplegic. He needed an emergency phone. Under his wheel chair was a brief case that had the phone.
In 1991 there weren't cell phones that I ever saw, or if so rarely and it had a kind of stigma to own one making one look exceptional, like some wealthy upwardly mobile exec with executive privileges etc.
It for sure is a difference now as compared to then. The epitome of it was when I walked past a popular planetarium in St. Paul, MN on a beautiful summer evening. About 15 or twenty people were waiting at the front entrance, sitting on the steps or on the grass waiting for a shuttle bus. All was silent as virtually all were staring at the smartphone screens, even young couples on a date.
I have a smartphone but I use it mainly like a cell phone. I also saw a husband and wife commuting in their car. Both were concentrating on the separate conversations they were having on their smart phones. Like I've heard some say that in the is information age smart phones are like an extension of ourselves as you notice how everyone has one.
I wonder now as the Artificial Intelligence Age is upon us too and the exponential growth of that and what the future holds. I think AI should develop with as little regulation as possible as we don't know the pros it can contain, pros in unknown ways that could improve science and the quality of life. Deal with the negatives as they arise, see AI through to its fullest potential as possible. The other problem is now the military has recently developed an atomic bomb 24 times more powerful than Hiroshima and Nagasaki and is probably implementing AI or has done so long before the public knows.
I am honestly ROLMAO, every generation says this. I am laughing and waiting to see who get's it right,
I rarely went in to downtown Los Angeles, but happened to have a job interview that day at the Central Library about a mile away. .. Best mile I ever ran to get to see this in person.
I was on my way to class that day. We could hear the music from the classroom.

I remember that when I was in Iraq. We'd be looking for road names and there wouldn't be any, the locals would just call a road the "Road to Baghdad" or whatever. One of the most iconic moments in the history of Rock music. True legends.
Aniket Giri they just copied the Beatles 😂
True biggest moment in music history
If iconic means a prefabricated media opportunity in the guise of a spontaneous street gathering then this event was truly legendary. U2's Schtick, Ego and Artifice transcend the boundaries of Rock theater, pushing the genre's boundaries outward into the outer realms of true comedy. Gods of their own making as the Universe chuckles. A true Wizard of Oz act.

The closest to heaven I've ever heard a guitar riff get. No wonder they call him the Edge. Definitely one of the greats. Bono ain't too bad either.
The opening arpeggio of Edge is great.
Bono is one of the most powerful singers in rock history
Bono is amazing at raising money for his charity. THe fact he keeps 100's of millions for his personal 'administration costs' makes him a great entrepreneur.
Wouldnt really call any part of this song a guitar riff... its mainly him just doing palm mutes and strumming up and down fast with an echo effect. He's not really great at guitar, he's great at working with effects.
Jacob Villines yeah but he has a unique sound..
How much better is this than the shit today? No re takes, no special effects just reality and quality and it's brilliant!
Amen...
I agree that this song is legendary, but the idea that the song has no retakes or special effects is tremendously untrue.
There are a *mountain* of effects on this track, and while the band initially tried to get it done in the studio in one live take as a full band, by the end of the recording they had done so many retakes of individual parts that nothing of their original one take was left.
all the things change but not better maybe worse

First heard this song on the radio as a 12 year old, summer hols, no school, no cares, moved so much by the song I had to have the album, saved up my hard earned pocket money, rushed down the record shop, bought myself Joshua Tree on vinyl. 44 now and the song still speaks to me👍, Joshua Tree was U2 at there best
my dad 54 now introduced me to this song..
Mik Finders Keepers Heard this song when I was 4 years old. My father "showed" it to me when we were driving in the car and I really liked it. And when I was 6 or 7 I had been to the concert in vienna. Lol... 8 years ago... Time flies by...
Felix Zettel nice mate. I never seen them live, it's one of my biggest regrets, I had the chance to see them in early 90's at roundhey park Leeds but the dates clashed with a family holiday to Spain. I don't remember much about the holiday to Spain but I bet I would have remembered the concert 😢
Joshua Tree came out in 1987, not 1984 when you were 12 (btw, I'm also 44 yrs old).
jademm ok my bad, must av been summer 87 when I was 14. Seems like a lifetime ago, well I suppose it was.. could av sworn I was younger than 14 tho. Oh well time flies eh✌️️
I just closed my eyes, listened and smiled! I was 16 again for a few minutes. Thank U U2!
We ...love...you...dwarf!
I'm 16 now and I wish I could see somethink like that... Amazing ❤️
I'am 16 now. And i absolutely love u2 ❤
16 is your golden years! Cling to them years as you grow older.

GOD *** THE AUTHORITY AND CREATOR ****
I was here!!! Went to LA to buy merchandise in the LA toy district. Got stuck in traffic, got out and watched them play this one song...awesome!! 80s were badass!!!
I applause U2 for standing their ground and almost finishing their set. I know the footage we saw was post processed but their courage was so amassing. I love them!
They ran the song three times before being shut down.
@@jimmylivingston6338 very true!! The concept to make this video was bad ass!!
Imagine this set without cops intervening and we got 4 or 5 songs instead of 0.8 of a song.
The Beatles did it first😂
THANK YOU DONALD MARSHALL FOR THIS SONG. TRUTH IS COMIMG OUT BLOOD
*The all time greatest intro to any song I’ve ever heard...*
It's great but not quite czcams.com/video/QkF3oxziUI4/video.html
Take back previous comment since the intros are fundamentally different. TBH my favourite into is no intro at all czcams.com/video/eGp47YwDZ48/video.html
You need to listen to Blackened on Metallica's "and justice for all...." album....that's the greatest intro ever.
@@AlanAttack You've reminded me of a formative album. Meant a lot when I was young. I'm 48 so you know how we forget. Lived through a golden age of music though. Just found this: czcams.com/video/rJWsDpA909c/video.html Fantastic record. A British perspective.
@@RandallSlick sweet...thanks man....never too old to rock brother.
I'm from ireland. In 1987 i met an American girl in England and brought her to ireland for a week. She left me this tape. I played it over and over knowing i would soon be reunited as she had invited me to come to Los Angeles to live with her. 6 months later i packed up and moved to Anaheim near Los Angeles to be with her. This song really brings back those memories of the best days of my life.
Are you still there?
@@KoalaBeer. living just outside San Francisco since 94. Divorced from that girl now.
@@keeperlit.leterrip7722hey I’m with you
I'm about to do the same thing buddy.

Absolutely still has the" effect ," if you let it..... Now more then ever !!! uphoric recall at it's finest.....

Absolutely one of the best songs ever written. This song conveys emotion like no other 🤍

No riots, no looting, no burning, no killing.
All united for a great tune!
God bless.
The good old days! (Also I’m 19 years old so I couldn’t really experience it)
@@ids5096 Unfortunately you are not able to experience what many of us did growing up as a teenager in the 90's, however, and I mean HOWEVER.
You are still able to listen and watch videos.
You are able to keep this decade of amazing music moving forward by sharing, and passing on your experiences.
I was 19 in 1987.
I remember it like yesterday, and how grateful I was to experience it all.
One piece of advice if I may.
I am pretty sure you know how to add, and can figure out how old I am now.
It may seem to you that this number is a long ways away.
Here is my advice.
It is a snap of the fingers and you will be looking back and saying. Where did it go.
Live your life the way you want to.
Be a free thinker, and be accountable for your mistakes, and WRONG CHOICES.
Do not make excuses.
Failing is not failure, as long as you have learnt from it.
Also, just because something feels good, does not mean it does good.
Following your heart is nice and all, but wisdom conquers all.
Listen to your heart, but use your brain.
Just because something feels good, does not mean it does good.
Much success to you, and God bless.
@@bradfiegehen7092 Thanks for those words of wisdom. My father always tells me that back then he didn’t have access to music like most people my age these days and I was keep that in mind and I’m very grateful for that. Also, like you said I’ll be able to move forward and be sharing these experiences like my father has to me and I look forward to that. And once again thanks for the amazing advice you made my whole day! Thank you and god bless you!
@@ids5096 Wow. Such a nice and respectful response.
I am grateful.
Have an amazing day, and again.
Much success. I think you will do just great.
That's only cos' the cops forgot their bullets & matches.
GO CANUCKS GO!!
That's all this song is about
When U2 was a awesome band! Loved the Joshua Tree album!
If you live in Los Angeles or are from here. i recommend watching this extraordinary video shoot in its entirety.. Unprecedented, in that the location they chose was in "skid row" area of downtown LA, perhaps the most depressing place in CA. Bringing happiness to so many less fortunate people that live on the street and everyday working regardless of wealth or lack of, is a very tall order. I commend U2 for making this happen. You can feel it when you see them dancing like it was the best time of their life. I can't remember the last time i smiled this big :) It's very heartfelt to me, as an Angelino.
Merci Chris pour ce commentaire. On a envie d’en savoir un peu plus 😉
Hey Chris, nice thoughts. Do you happen to know who the commentators are on the video? They're really great and I like the woman. Was wondering if you knew. Some local radio from the time? :) xx
chris viewed... and '18 and life' came from that downtown area of LA
@@bensavage4575 they were from KLOS and the female is Rita Wilde...."The video begins with clips of radio DJs informing their listeners that U2 would be doing a video shoot that afternoon at 7th and Main in downtown Los Angeles - a tip and a warning.
"[The radio station owners] were really specific about us mentioning that it's not the safest part of town to go to, just so we weren't liable for anything," says radio host Rita Wilde, whose voice you hear first. (In the original video before the reissue, she explains, hers was the only voice.) "They really wanted us to stress that fact."
Over on-air banter by Wilde - then co-host of the morning show for 95.5 KLOS - and other DJs, we see shots of the band and crew setting up for the performance on top of a one-storey building, a liquor store (now a Mexican restaurant called Margarita's Place). Crews had earlier reinforced the roof, in case fans somehow managed to climb up."
@@RollaSu Thanks so much ! :) It's so exotic from a time when we weren't all connected and the DJ's seemed so free to me (UK).
I was there, and it was amazing. Thank goodness for the radio leak. Best skip day ever.
Hi Tara! Were you featured in the video? Or do you know anyone who was? I'm working on a tribute project and would love to hear from you! LauraGirl729@gmail. Thanks in advance!
Laura Palmer Bonjour Laura, alors ce projet, où en est-il ? J’aimerais beaucoup qu’on retrouve tous les acteurs comme les police officers présents ce jour là pour un nouveau clip vidéo 32 ans après. Bonne Année 👋
‘I'm gonna go over, I don't care. I can be sucked into this. I'll be in the video. Come on!’
Thats why i bought a black strat. The Edges guitar. Loved it. Still have it too. 1983. Same guitar. Thx guys.
Saw that guitar in the new years day video.😅
This recording is a masterpiece in every respect. The quality, the cuts, the smiles on people's faces.
I'm not really a fan of "everything was better in the past", but the people in the crowd look so much healthier, fitter and somehow also more honest than today. That doesn't mean that they were really better off, but everything seems more authentic than nowadays.
I love it because there is no race disconnect and everyone was happy and dancing with each other. It's sad we don't have that anymore!
No cell phones
The present will be the past
Karma theory. What u sow so shall u reap.dishonest humans..dishonest mother nature .will take revenge.
W punkt👏
Its a song from the late 80s when everything starts moving in the right direction. So much hope, such a great time, so many promises of a bright future for the whole world. And now? everything must be woke and depressing. But hey boomers, lets stand up shouting: Millenials fuck off, we will take the world back and make it the great place its meant to be!
They gave them folks an experience they will never forget in life. A truly unspeakable moment.
Michael D., well said!
These guys make me feel proud to be Irish
Such a great Decade of Music with U2 leading the way

If U2 had quit after Joshua Tree, they would still be remembered as one of the greatest bands in the history of rock music...yet look at all they have given the world since then!! Thank you and may God bless you, U2!!
OMG I'm getin' old, This was only 30 years ago...:(
Agreed. I was 20 and in college when this album came out. ugh!

Don't expect intelligence from Cops - they are merely paid Muppets.
In UK, often called Wooden-Tops (a nicer term, amongst far more accurate and indeed vulgar slang terms for them)
Back when U2 was the biggest band in the world and Joshua Tree the biggest album and ya couldn't get tickets to see them live because they were sold out! I miss the 80's.
