Absolutely amazing version! Fantastic performance by Bono ! This is U2 becoming the greatest rock band on the planet and on their way to reach their peak on Achtung Baby a few years later.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" grew from a guitar riff and lyric written by The Edge in 1982. While newlyweds Bono and Ali Hewson honeymooned in Jamaica, The Edge worked in Ireland on music for the band's upcoming album. Following an argument with his girlfriend, and a period of doubt in his own song-writing abilities, The Edge-"feeling depressed... channeled [his] fear and frustration and self-loathing into a piece of music". This early draft did not yet have a title or chorus melody, but did contain a structural outline and theme. After Bono had reworked the lyrics, the band recorded the song at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. During the sessions, producer Steve Lillywhite encouraged drummer Larry Mullen Jr. to use a click track, but Mullen was firmly against the idea. A chance meeting with Andy Newmark (of Sly & the Family Stone) - a drummer who used a click track religiously - changed Mullen's mind. The opening drum pattern soon developed into the song's hook. A local violinist, Steve Wickham, approached The Edge one morning at a bus stop and asked if U2 had any need for a violin on their next album. In the studio for only half a day, Wickham's electric violin became the final instrumental contribution to the song. Drummer Mullen said of the song in 1983: "We're into the politics of people, we're not into politics. Like you talk about Northern Ireland, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday,' people sort of think, 'Oh, that time when 13 Catholics were shot by British soldiers'; that's not what the song is about. That's an incident, the most famous incident in Northern Ireland and it's the strongest way of saying, 'How long? How long do we have to put up with this?' I don't care who's who - Catholics, Protestants, whatever. You know people are dying every single day through bitterness and hate, and we're saying why? What's the point? And you can move that into places like El Salvador and other similar situations - people dying. Let's forget the politics, let's stop shooting each other and sit around the table and talk about it... There are a lot of bands taking sides saying politics is crap, etc. Well, so what! The real battle is people dying, that's the real battle".
This has been my favorite version of Sunday Bloody Sunday, since I first saw the movie, Rattle and Hum. That remains to this day over thirty years later and is also a reason why this song remains one of my favorite U2 songs of all time.
No big production, no fancy glasses and clothes, just emotions, awareness and great music! Too bad I was too young in 1987 to be at the Joshua Tree concerts! After the ZOO TV era they should have stopped it and said to themselves: Ok, we gave them some fanciness and technology, now let's go back to the "old" U2!
it's an industry wide problem. The Death of Mainstream Rock. It's all Pop, Hip Hop, Rap and COUNTRY now. The attitude of rock as been replaced wwith something else entirely.

One of my favorite songs - top 3! I can remember when we listened to it the first time in 1982 or 1983 - there was so much power and spirit in this song although we realized several years later the true mining of this song and what happened on 30th of January 1972 in (London)Derry. Due to the motion picture "Bloody sunday" by Paul Greengrass I was scared about the fact, that all this took place in a country which is member of the EU and the NATO... Stand up for freedom and liberty in Europe! We shall overcome!

+Colin Todd where did you find that quote? Also do you know what year this perfromance is taking place?
not the most famous, the Hunger strikes were the most famous
A melhor versão de Sunday ....
Karmen Mooney it was filmed in 1987 during the Joshua Tree Tour.
This has been my favorite version of Sunday Bloody Sunday, since I first saw the movie, Rattle and Hum. That remains to this day over thirty years later and is also a reason why this song remains one of my favorite U2 songs of all time.
❤❤❤ thank you U2 for your brilliant music it touches me more then you will ever know!! 💜💜💜💜
what a wonderful version. Amazing
The Irish built America 🇺🇸 we love you 💚
No big production, no fancy glasses and clothes, just emotions, awareness and great music! Too bad I was too young in 1987 to be at the Joshua Tree concerts! After the ZOO TV era they should have stopped it and said to themselves: Ok, we gave them some fanciness and technology, now let's go back to the "old" U2!
so true...
it's an industry wide problem. The Death of Mainstream Rock. It's all Pop, Hip Hop, Rap and COUNTRY now. The attitude of rock as been replaced wwith something else entirely.
Great text ,were so good in those days x
+Jason McCann Not true at all! Rock is alive and well...
They had big production and fancy clothes by this time. Plus Bono wears the shades because he has glaucoma.
Massive power from whole U2 band!!! The bass gitarr is amazing :-)
Sorry brilliant 💞
Wow!!! I pumped into this performance and I promise I am speechless!!! 😯😯😯
Das war für mich eine der schönsten Zeiten überhaupt. Danke U2. Best Time .Danke 😊danke
"When fact is fiction, TV reality.." Even more true today.
U2 best band ever this version is amazing
masterpiece bono!
The way edge struts out during the solo is so friggen awesome.
When we as a planet realize we are all Gods children. All of us brothers and sister's. Our Father in Heaven must be so disappointed in us.
He is singing and speaking real pure and powerful straight from the heart to the vocal instrument
U2 eternos. La mejor música del mejor grupo. Siempre en nuestras almas.
Good god, Bono had a set of pipes, and U2's musicianship was amazing....fuck they blow now
AstroKnott seen them in 2015 and they were amazing idk what you're talking about
i mean their music in general. aside from a small handful of songs, i'm not impressed with anything they've made since achtung baby. im sure they still rock live
AstroKnott I loved how to dismantle an atomic bomb. The more recent album I liked 3 or 4 off of it that was about it. But I'm looking forward to songs of experiences coming soon
spoken like a true douchebag and a guy who's bitter his best days are behind him.
+Hallucination wahhhh
I feel like the fans missed the initial message. This is heartbreakingly beautiful ❤️
Clayton never gets his due. He brings out the funk here.
Beautiful!!!! U2 Eterno..... ✌✌✌🎶🎶🎸🎸 -:) \♡/-:D Melhor banda Do Planeta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brasil 😍😍😍👊💪👊
Brilliant performance of a brilliant song showing U2 at the height of their powers as a live and relevant band.
This has to be my most favorite live version ❤
It’s passion, spirit, and talent. It grabs onto my heart and stays with me. 2024.
One of the best live performance ever🖤🤘🏽🇬🇹❤️
Iooppp😊😊😊😊
Wow a lot of hateful comments about Bono ? U2 are the hardest working band to date they've earned it.
John Dunlop
YEAH HE IS A GOOD HEARTED MAN AND STRONG WISH WE HAD ALLOT MORE LIKE HIM YOU GO BONO (PEACE BE WITH ALL OF YOU MY HEART GOES OUT WITH YOU
as if Bono cares what any negetive comments are made regarding these social sites chats comments a man with no reason or need to read these comments hes having a good life in Ireland where they all reside they did not come running... into the ARMS OF AMERICA for greed or to seek residency no the lads are quite aware of the pitfalls of our country the USA they love us but they NEVER WANTED TO BE LIKE US or stay here they love who they are where they live and what they do
One of my favorite songs - top 3!
God damn. Never cared for U2 or Bono. But now I get it. That vocal performance was astounding and deep.
Classy performance by bono superb guitars by edge
Amazing performance AND message...
The best album ever....
I still listen to this song
Oh, how I miss this from them... They were so raw back then... *sigh*
When he screams "No MORE!" and his voice breaks, I get goosebumps every time! So much emotion!!
BEST VERSION OF ALL TIMES!
Me too and yes ur right
U2 are more poetic than musical they’re really great
Saw U2 16.5 yrs ago in Lexington Ky.
Tickets were expensive ;but, they worked their asses off.It was worth every penny.
It will forever be their best song!!
A time when Bono's politics made sense. Maybe the greatest single performance of any song with so much political weight. Bono's vocal's are brilliant.
Only 23 years old when they did this song. Amazing and emotional.
As I right this I was at this concert 30 years ago at this very moment. Strange how time has flown.
La plus belle version, magnifique
IRISH POWER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
20 years people 20 years i see this u2 in vhs,,this concert change my life ever my love my band my boys no more u2 ever the best ever,,love from portugal,,paul
I love you,guys!....
And i admire you and respect you..
When U2 were U2....
🎸🎤
True how long can we sing this song
Love Bono not seen U2 in concert yet but I have all their songs 🎉 xx
You simply must try when they finally get out of that Vegas thing and tour the United states. It's absolutely amazing. Of course Bono is not right up there with the vocals like he was 20-30 years ago, but it's not about that it's about the music and the experience
His greatest performance...🇮🇪🇺🇸🇻🇦✝️☮️♾️‼️
Não importa a prentesao do álbum. U2 é sempre U2 e tem canções memoráveis !!!!
Seguro, ellos son la encima de Irlanda
