  • Gordon Willis is regarded by all of his peers as one of the greatest cinematographers in the history of film, and for many as the greatest of all time, period. Between lensing The Godfather trilogy, many of Woody Allen's best films (including Annie Hall, Manhattan, Stardust Memories, Interiors, and others) and several master thrillers for Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men, Klute, The Parallax View, The Devil's own, and others), Gordon Willis practically single-handedly re-invented the craft of cinematography and the nature by which films were and are composed, lit, and executed. He has left an indelible mark on the craft of filmmaking and we are delighted to present him in a two part interview here. We hope you enjoy a small window into a great man's achievements and approach.

"It was 20 minutes before the movie started that I decided how it should look like overall". Wow. He's talking about one of the most admired movies in history, with iconic images every minute, The Godfather. Amazing man. RIP mister Willis. Your work will lives on.

very inspiring guy. this type of DP is probably going to die out very soon :( I love how he praises simplicity and actual need of equipment over habit. thanks for the elaborate interview, RIP Mr. Willis

This interview needs to go in a time capsule; it's that good.

There's a raw footage long form interview with Gordon Willis on CZcams that's very good, but this one, with clips included, is special. Great conversation with one of the best cinematographers to ever do it. Inspirational. Like your channel. Thank you!

This is really amazing, the fact that your not or commenting, the thing that makes a great interview is when a question is asked and its answered not by the host but the guest, you only did that a couple of times but you made up for that by asking all the right questions, this is really great .....is this the full interview?

Love his work but I would have asked him how he shot godfather too. Of course he could explain the technical things. If he didn’t want to reveal his process fine but it’s silly to say he “can’t”.

Great to see Willis, but also a lot of missed opportunities. Why did he retire? Would he ever consider shooting again? Does he miss it?
