I agree with you totally where was dad when all this was going on ..i know my divorce experience isn't like all cases but it is like most my exwife and me were ALWAYS in communication when it came to our children if one of my kids as much as scraped a knee when they were in her care I expected to hear about it so something like this why was dad involved
Doesn't seem like the bio dad was around or did anything to help the mom and step dad out with daniel. He was a distant father. This poor woman. No mom wants to admit their child has issues and she was doing what she thought was right. I don't blame her one bit. Sure things shoyld have been done but we can say that now after the fact but I don't think anyone saw this coming.
Im sure daniel regrets his actions everyday and it's something he has to live with forever. Such a tragedy. My heart thoughts and prayers go out to the youngest son and Simon. I don't know how they get through day to day tasks. God bless them!

How did this woman not know that there was something VERY wrong with her son? If my 11 year old was urinating and defacating on their things and in their room I'd have them at the doctor's office in a heartbeat.

She was neglectful but he was a nut and woulda been that antisocial weirdo we see at a hospital cleaning the restrooms and smiling and giggling to himself, then retreating to the empty lonely basement where he felt comfortable...we see/interact with these people everyday and write them off as strange
It's terrible that she died but she did nothing to help the situation. He already had issues but was clearly crying out to help and she didn't take him seriously. Even the step-father was aware that he had issues. Everyone likes to think their children are little angels but the fact of the matter is that they are their own people. They can be bad. She was in denial and it cost her.
i feel so bad for the younger brother. this poor kid witnessed his older brother bashing his moms head in and setting the house on fire and lying about it too. imagine her screams and the little brother had to hear that. the poor baby
I feel for the poor child, life time of therapy will be needed.
But I can bet that despite that horrific trauma the little brother endured, he will not grow up to be a killer!

@Kelly Day I agree, I don't believe these people are made, I believe they're born that way, otherwise their siblings would all be the same. All of us are capable of killing if we needed to, but to want or need to for enjoyment has got to be a naturally occiring brain wiring problem.

@@shirleyhunter3462 I actually read it as the dad bouncing , not wanting the kid or not having time for him as he lived his new life free of his kids. He bought him an expensive computer right? That's a guilty purchase if I've ever heard of one. He was also refusing to pay for his schooling. A lot of mom's will shield their children from the fact that dad doesn't want them anymore. Notice how the dad's face was blurred out of the documentary? He doesn't take responsibility for what's happened.
Maybe because the stepdad was around in the custodial home and he would be able to observe the dynamics of the family and daniel.

When you add all of it together, it's Adam Lanza and his mother all over again. I guess we can all take a breath and be relieved that he stopped after only killing his mother, but I think this is a real warning to all parents who make excuses for their child's odd behaviors instead of taking them seriously.

i find that ppl feel a type of shame..about mental health problems..like his mother not wanting it to get out. if you're child is acting this way that raises reg flags.. its best to get help as soon as you can.
Not as easy as that. In the uk it can take over 10 years for you to get help from social services for out of controll behavior. Schools need to refer the child for this help which goes to your drs which then goes to a pediatrician and so on and so on. Its an endless system of BS and 9/10 the child is never seen and becomes a violent offender.
Also this was early 2000s its now 2019 and only now are we starting to take away the shame and talk about mental illness. Back then this wouldnt have even been mentioned

Girl101 Yes, from what Simon told us about him standing angrily over her she probably was scared of him, and that's why Simon was the one cleaning his room. They could most likely smell it, and decided something had to be done.

This channel tends to present very over-produced, skewed and sensationalized content. The stories are interesting, I just wish they'd reevaluate their approach.
The part where it says that horror movies triggered fear excitement no it triggered fight as he was predatory not prey.. In different natures, different responses are triggered.
In a person that's not predatory it would be more likely trigger fear as a prey response as they would recognise themselves as the victim not the main horror character which is what he will have identified with

It's funny how they never consider that serial killers can also come from families that spoil them rotten. Too much love and permissiveness is just as harmful as none at all. It´s not only abuse that makes a killer, it´s not being able to say no, ever, and letting him get his way. The first NO triggers so much rage, they can´t accept it and become violent.

@@LunaRose1312 I agree. I have a personality disorder myself and there really things that are beyond my control. Like blacking out, walking out of a discussion because I was having a panic attack/flashbacks, dissociating, etc... Although throughout the years, it's gotten a bit better. it's even harder for those who have 0 awareness about their illness--they're basically in the dark...no awareness of the interventions that can be done to keep the symptoms under control.

people need to stop blaming anyone here... the blame is the divorce.. you have NO IDEA what impact that can have on a kid when they are at the age of finding thier identity and who they are and what is what... divorces need to happen b4 kids are 4 years old,.. after that.. its to traumatic... and its the same old thing... parents get divorced.. mum meets new guy.. new guy tries to play dad.. mum gives more attention to new guy.... seen it OVER AND OVER AGAIN... this really messes with kids head and personality, so please stop saying "he was just a syco.. as he was fine till they divorced..
There’s not much in this documentary about the parents and I don’t find the case interesting enough to go digging. It certainly trauma is a big player in this case. The second partner gives me the impression the divorce situation was more complicated than implied in the documentary
I would have sent him to live with his dad. He needed someone who could handle this behavior.

No they don't. That's why a personality disorder is a disorder of judgment as well as mood. This boy was screaming for help and was left to cope with it by himself while being brushed off by all adults that were responsible for him.
I saw another doc on this channel where he appears and is quite a brilliant artist. He admits to having difficulties understanding emotions. I agree with you, he was screaming for help but no one heard. It was just a terrible situation where no one knew how to react that ended up in tragedy

Um what? Not you sympathizing with someone who can't even sympathize because they have no emotions. Psychopaths aren't interested in help because they don't see anything wrong with their behavior or mental state because in order for you to seek help and believe something is wrong with you you have to have a strong sense of self and a conscience something psychopaths and sociopaths lack severely. Another thing is they DO CHOOSE to hurt people because most psychopaths get off on violence or seeing living things suffer. There's literally hundreds of interviews online and even blogs and facebook groups where sociopaths and psychopaths meet discussing getting off on seeing others suffering cause they experience power and what not. Some of ya'll are delusional and naive I swear. Perfect victims for antisocial personality types
So the terrible trauma he experienced was having to move house, a new school and his parents splitting up? So he killed his mother. What would he have done had he experienced real trauma like physical, sexual and emotional abuse, poverty and true neglect.

If I found my 11 year old watching 18 rated films, I’d hit the roof. This whole story screams poor parenting. Kids need structure, discipline and boundaries. When they push their luck, they need to be shut down quickly and in no uncertain terms.
It’s like those tv shows about problem dogs.. it’s always the owner’s lack of ability to lead and control the animal correctly.
This lad was totally lost and ended up going down a very destructive path. Sad.

IF you had actually read the FBI report on violent media and their influence on mass shooters, you'll find that video media actually had little effect. Most offenders were reported to be most affected by violent literature. And statistically since the invention of video and the digital age violent crime has overall been on a steady decline. The general theory is that visual media doesn't cause someone to go bad, but it can be something that's either a hobby or an obsession in people who go bad. Some people are born bad, some people are made bad but violent videos aren't gonna make you bad. You have to already have it in you.

When my son was 11, he was not allowed ro have a computer in his room. And i did monitor what sites he accessed and talked to him about anything i found questionable, in a genuinely curious manner. Honestly, we were all trying to figure out this technology thing out. My son was born December 1994. So, he seemed to come of age as smart phones did. It was hard for parents to determine how to handle all of this.
The guy at 20:45 says Daniel started to hit himself and punching the wall, yet at the beginning they said he never showed any signs of self-harm..... So.... Yeah,...what?

You're right. Self-harm includes striking oneself with non-lethal implements like hands, walls, basketballs, as well as potentially lethal ones like knives, hammers, or sidewalks. Long before I was diagnosed with borderline personality, I started slapping myself as an alternative to hitting the person that was nearest me, whether that was the person triggering my rage or not; at one point I beat myself so hard and so long with walls, floors, and furniture that I went to the ER after the rage had passed, where they insisted on running X-rays and a CT scan to be sure nothing had been fractured--and I know they didn't believe me when I assured them that it was self-inflicted. The difference is, I continued to search for answers until I was diagnosed accurately, and have been getting treatment and counselling for 3 decades though the diagnosis happened less than five years ago. Daniel is an example of what I could have become if enough people hadn't been concerned over my behavior after the traumatic brain injury that has shaped my life!

Done. Twice. It's very good advice and I had graduated, taken a year off, and begun a second round of DBT by the time I was diagnosed. It took 2 arrests and a court order to obtain the psychiatric evaluation that confirmed what I had known for 25 years--that major depression was NOT the only thing happening inside my traumatically injured brain. Thankfully, I am finally in a good life situation with minimal triggers and a slew of understanding people around me. Thank you for your support!

There were signs that he needed help and he even shared a graphic violent story to his mom and step dad. Perhaps this was his way of trying to share what was in his mind in an attempt to get help. His mom clearly brushed it of instead of sitting down with him to see where this violent story came from. She could have gotten him help for not only his violent thoughts but also his feelings of isolation.

Not necessarily he has to pass the parole board hearing and if deemed not ready for society then he can wait yrs til next parole hearing. Also they slowly reintegrate them bk into society with ankle monitors for awhile etc but some inmates never get released!!!

Kid 100% was mentally ill. Not psychopathic, but definitely sociopathic. Mom was emotionally neglectful. She was not abusive, but early on she couldn't see that his behaviors were mental illness and later on she willfully chose not to see his behavior as mental illness. Her inaction aided in her death, but she didn't deserve it. The kid could have been mitigated with intervention of mental health professionals but he was ignored. Tragic all around.
A lot of mothers think that turning a blind eye to whatever their kids do is a sign of what a good loving mother they are. Violet Kray was a prime example every one in Bethnal Green knew what they were but she refused to admit that HER boys could possibly do anything wrong. Even after hearing witnesses talking about the things they did insisting that everyone else was lying

I agree so much! The mother definately didn't deserve to be murdered by her own son, especially in the manner she was.. but I was very annoyed on how ignorant she was towards Daniel's behaviour. The role of a parent just does not end because your kid behaves badly. As a parent you are the responsble one and ahe needed to take him to A&E for a psychiatric assessment.
What seems to me that she did notice and I agree she didn't know what to do. I know some parents who know their kids are off the scale and try to get help but people do not believe the parents and say well he's just a kid. I've seen it happen too many times

Yeah, the mom and her partner (and presumably his father) saw *clear* signs that something was not right with this kid well before his violence spiraled out of control, but they just buried their heads. I understand that, I really do - but when my 11yr old began showing signs of anxiety, we got her help IMMEDIATELY. We didn’t wait for it to become so big that it crippled her. And, honestly, shouldn’t every family get therapy following a divorce or other major life stressor???
They all saw the signs. But she was in denial, deep denial. What could the step-father have done? She was clearly the type of woman who thinks her child could do no wrong and if the step-father had brought it up no doubt he would never be allowed near them again. Plus she wouldn't pay any attention.

Sadly, I think you're probably right. But the stepdad /mom's boyfriend could have tried to step up more up get the kid help - even if that meant making the mom mad. What's more important? And the biological father, if he's in the picture at all, should have done something, as well.
With ALL these teenage killers - really almost 100% of them - there have been signs that people either chose to ignore or refused to acknowledge or address. We fail as parents when we do either of those. Our kids are HUMAN...there are some who are going to have mental health struggles and it's *OUR RESPONSIBILITY* to help them when this happens, not bury our heads in the sand.

I Love the documentaries but, you need to fix that audio tracks. Bad mixing. Not only in this one. Lots of other videos from Real Stories have this issue. Sometimes we can´t hear the narrator or vice-versa because of the loud music or because of the loud voiceover. It´s a construct critic, i´m an audio and mixing professional. So many signs that something was going wrong with him and mom does nothing. Anybody can see that peeing on toys is not normal, never mind the defecation. That's not normal. I would have contacted a mental healthcare worker at the point of discovering the stolen underwear.

1. Abusive parents
2. Overly zealous religious parents
3. Have 6 or 7+ siblings
4. Animal abusers/killers at a young age
Or overly pushy parents or smothering parents
And/or head trauma.
Neglect whether it's emotional or physical is just as damaging as abuse.

Problematic children is often reason for divorce. Takes lots of sacrifice to raise normal children, imagine how hard is to raise child with mental illness. Fathers usually are first to run away from problems.

Great description of narcissism and psychopathy, but what really got on my nerves was the fact that they kept calling her a loving mother. She may have not physically abused him, but she appeared to shut down and disconnect herself from her child. I believe the lack of connection plays a roll in all of this. That being said he obviously he had some issues which should have been addressed long before this happened.
Yes. I've known a few mothers who are good at looking perfect to everyone on the surface, but are horribly cruel and abusive when no one else is watching.
Yes, I've even seen family members have very disruptive children and they act as if they don't even see it. I've seen some of these children grow up to have a lot of difficulties in life. It's more prevalent than we think.

A study has been carried out which has proven that psychopaths brains are wired diffently. Personally, I believe that all the disturbing videos he (the child) watched, including the one from Coronation Street, did have a major impact on his psyche. I think the mother may have overlooked a lot of the boy's negative behaviours because she was suffering from guilt over her failed marriage. This is a very tragic case. May the mother rest in peace.

I don't know, the small information we have about what went on in the home, it doesn't sound like she was a good mother. It is also very possible for a child to be physically or emotionally abused and still show love to that parent. This child screamed for help and no one helped him. It is not normal to steal your mother's underwear. It's not normal to defecate and urinate on your belongings. It's not normal to have a child seeking out that kind of violent media at that age (never mind being given access to it). It's not normal for a child to think inanimate objects are telling him to do things. It sounds like the family had money, and to people involved, if they had money, then they must be good parents. But nothing this mother did made it seem like she was a good mother. It doesn't mean she deserved to die, but she also hugely failed her child.

Even if the mother didn't want the dad in his life unless he was a risk of harm to the kid or was going to damage him in some way then it doesn't matter what she wants. It's what the child needs. Hate seeing petty mothers making their kids suffer because they don't like the dad anymore.

Take away what they consider to be 'normal' and replace it with someone NEW and you're asking for trouble. I had great 'step parents' but the damage was deep I can tell you. I didn't WANT step parents. I wanted my OWN mother and father to get along. 💔

I was affronted when Mr McIntyre started this show with the statement about "the son and their mothers". You do realise that most of these children who murder and murder their mothers come from broken homes or dysfunctional families so why was the father's absence apart from weekend visits, does one NOT think this might be part of the problem?

It probably *is* part of the problem, but rightly or wrongly, the role of 'nurturer' has typically fallen to the mother (or the person in that role)... It's perhaps simplistic but the theory is known as 'nature vs nurture' 🤷♀️

The parents needed to step in and help, they needed to speak to him about the more private facts about the divorce, not all of them of course... but to help the kid understand. You have to stay present, get closer even and be better as a parent, divorce means you have to step up more. You cant try to just give them what they want and handle it themselves... parents cant try to make them have the same life, it wont be the same and they will have pent up emotions... my parents told me and it helped so much... I adapted to all of the change because I knew why it was happening and that it would be better and okay for everyone's feelings.
How sad that the signs got missed but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Yeah, well...it sounds like to me the mom ignored the signs that something was mentally and emotionally not right with her son. I am not saying that gave him the right to kill his mom, but who knows what was going on that (perhaps) provoked him to deal with this violently. He needed help and was denied that to save face. Technically in terms of psychiatry they are absolutely not, because the person still knows the right from wrong and they still choose to commit the thing that they want regardless of the social rules and possible repercussions of which they are quite, if not fully aware.
I have antisocial personality disorder. They're not mental illnesses. They're mental abnormalities, which is different.
Mental illness can be treated; personality disorders, not so much- because how do you change someone's fundamental personality, even if it is maladaptive? Depression, bi-polar, things of that nature can be seen as chemical imbalances in the brain and corrected to some extent, but personality disorders, biologically, are just the way some people are wired...at least that's the way I see it

Only the ones who get diagnosed for research, curiosity (like myself) and for criminal proceedings ever find out, the rest just live their life never knowing; just adapting and surviving the best they can.
Watching these programmes, I have only one question. There are many people who go through strange behaviours while young and that doesn't make them murder people. Looking at my childhood and youth one would say I tick all the boxes but I am nowhere near to hurt anyone. Just a pathetic attempt to explain behaviour that no one can explain. Why some people kill and others don't.
Imagine a murderer is behind this screen watching this at the same time as you.
Imagine being watched daily by one that has no regard for you as a person or your privacy.
