Lemon Demon's 2016 album Spirit Phone was a project 8 years in the making; this video aims to try and recreate the experience one would have listening to an early cut of the album back in 2014, riddled with demos and early takes. While not entirely perfect, this is Spirit Phone: 2014.

As a long time fan I honestly prefer these rough versions better. Especially stuff like No Eyed Girl and Ancient Aliens just sound better imo. A lot harder hitting. I don’t really care for technicality or whether its polished or not. Though yeah some of this most definitely was improved in the final product…. Especially Lifetime

I think the transition into Lifetime Achievement Award would be kinda nice though, the wind fading in at the last few bars to open LAA. Not sure how the Spiral of Ants transition would work though.
Lemon Demons music is all about urban legends, conspiracy theories, mysteries and the occult, so my headcanon is that this is a finished album that he only released in a parallel universe.
If you want to be technical, there's an early mix of Spirit Phone from 2014 that was shown to Neil's mom and (MAYBE) Alora Lanzilotta. I believe the Lifetime Achievement Award and No Eyed Girl demos are from that cut.
Well thats really only the music on spirit phone, if you look even just an album back theres alot of songs about other stuff, he used to make alot of happy go lucky nonsense songs, though his subject matter really seemed to gradually change alot over the years
Have you heard his music besides spirit phone? There’s not really much of that kind of thing in his other albums
@@OilyBastard they actually have a point though. quite a lot of his old songs are to do with supernatural stuff (cults, beasts, companies that rule, etc) including most of Clown Circus, Murray Mix from back in his Deporitaz days, Consumer Whore, When Robots Attack, Bad Idea, the Dinosaurchesta trilogy, just to name a few.

I think the thing is that he wanted the vibe of the song to be different. The good thing is that we're able to hear both versions as we please!
Gravity Falls Lore:
Kubrick and the Beast was also intended to be used during an epilogue montage in Gravity Falls
Both Gravitron and Moon's Request were demos/inspiration for Gravity Falls' intro, with Moon's request being a remix of a single lyric
I KNEW that Kubrick and the Beast was supposed to be a Gravity Falls song.
It just gave off those vibes
Moon's Request wasn't created as a intro to Gravity Falls, but a song to cure Neil's writing block while making all the Gravity Fall intros.
@@penners7046 well no it actually wasn't, it was intended to be the intro for spirit phone, but the mood changed too much for that to happen. His sister Emmy is a storyboard artist for gravity falls, and she storyboarded an outro with Kubrick and the beast playing in the background that was never used.

I think the whole tone thing with Kubrick and the beast is a shame because it’s such a nice song and I love the mood of it, but alas lifetime achievement award is what we have

It’s interesting to think about the fact that Neil has most the lyrics already made in all the songs but took another 3 or so years to finish the album
I really like the old intro and outro of When He Died. I feel like it ties the song together better then the finished version. (Not saying that the finished version is bad)

When He Died is an amazing song but the fact that it fades away to nothingness at the end leaving seconds of silence ruins the experience of listening to it on repeat like I would Soft Fuzzy Man or Cabinet Man or Man-Made Object et al makes it a solid 9/10 instead of a 10/10. the quietness only works when Sweet Bod is what follows. But other than that it's amazing

I really appreciate this, as many of these early mixes sound more like classic 00's Lemon Demon in crisp, simple quality. Neil's voice is also more audible in a number of tracks, such as Sweet Bod.
THE ROBOT VOICE IN LAA IM SCREAMING
I've always loved this version of Ancient Aliens so much more ever since it was first discovered! As a drummer I always fuckin loved how they made it really punk/grunge sounding with the kind of fills Neil added. I still love the original but its a lot more disappointing to hear much straighter pop type beats instead, though it fits the final album a lot better. Yet this is still one of the only tracks I continuously come back to being a long time fan
I can definitely understand why Neil spent two more years working on the album, everything definitely didn't sound complete and it honestly frustrates me how Lifetime Achievement Award was just, so empty.
From the order of songs I suppose this is supposed to emulate the Spirit Phone tracklisting, if so, why is Reaganomics before As Your Father?

i love lifetime achivement award 2014 it's almost the same version from the snippet and i always wanted to hear it now the only ones that i would love to hear are ancient aliens 2013 and angry people 2012 both from the snippets but i think they are forever lost / neil would rather not share them
