      I don't really understand. The Quest 2's higher resolution is not only harder to drive in general, but the compression will introduce a performance overhead on your pc. For people that only have a midrange PC, say something like a 1070 for example, a Rift S might just have the more clear experience.
      I think a Rift S is still worth it for someone who's on a budget with a midrange PC and who only cares about PCVR

      @Cooe. Před 2 lety +2

      I actually wouldn't take an Index over a Quest 2 personally, but I'm a bit of a resolution snob. IMO, the Index's wider FOV & better built-in audio just aren't worth giving up literally 50% of your pixels for. 🤷‍♂️
      The Quest 2 is just on a COMPLETELY different level when it comes to sharpness/clarity, even if its image field is notably smaller. Thus I see the Index as one step forward but two steps back. ESPECIALLY when you consider that those much fewer pixels have to be stretched out over an even larger, wider area.
      I totally agree with Boz (head of Meta Reality Labs [aka what used to be Oculus]) in that pixel density (at least up to a point) is FAR more important in the immediate future to VR immersion than increased FOV.
      HTC made the right choice to prioritize resolution over FOV with the Vive Pro 2 and I'm hoping that Meta does the same w/ Quest 3 (sure, a moderately higher FOV would obviously be nice, but not if it comes at the expense of additional pixel density!)

    I have the quest 2 as my first headset. And i am really enjoying it . The price is really great for what you get. All I did was get the Audio strap Frankenquest and a 16 foot link cable (don’t waste money on the oculus one, its over priced) . To make the oculus more comfortable because the strap it comes with is so uncomfortable and painful
    So i have a pretty good PC , but my GPU is old and because of all the scalping i can’t upgrade yet. I have a 1060 6Gb and with the quest 2 I actually can play Half life Alyx at high setting . And it runs pretty smooth.
    The fact that you can play wireless too is legit awesome, and frankly the facebook argument really don’t bother me. Who doesn’t have a facebook account these days anyways..probably a small percentage of people living in modern society. But regardless What I did is , I setup a new facebook account for solely entertainment purpose and that works fine by me.
    I do wanna try the valve index tho, to see how different it actually is because if i was to upgrade i was thinking of the valve index or maybe the valve index 2 when it comes out and also because Half life Alyx is my favorite game

    Crazy how much has changed over only a year. Seamless wireless pcvr with the quest with 120hz refresh rate kind of makes it the only option at this point. And in my opinion, with the higher resolution, high refresh rate and wireless play, the quest 2 basically blows the index out of the water.

    • @connermckay4012
      @connermckay4012 Před rokem

      In my experience the quest can be extremely hit or miss. My mom’s headset had a damaged fan out of the box that still functions, but only enough to prevent a fire hazard. It gets really hot and makes a loud noise. My brother’s headset lags to death on the home menu so hard he’s actually been put off turning it on and having to deal with the lag. It goes away completely when he gets into a game. And my headset works generally okay, but has some weird performance issues especially when recording, and also is pretty much useless for connecting to a PC. I’ve tried several cables, have an extremely capable computer, and still the resolution is so potatoed that I can literally count pixels of an object that’s two feet away from my face. The distance resolution scaling in a lot of pcvr games also brakes dramatically when I try to use the quest, meaning that if I’m trying to play something like Microsoft flight simulator, I can only go to airports I’ve been to several times before outside of vr, because I literally won’t be able to see the damn runway as anything more than a black shitstain until I get too close to pull out of any kind of landing attempt. All around, just a really poor experience with these headsets. All of these are relatively new (my mom’s has the most glaring issue and is also the newest), and they’re all relatively low-use. They just kinda arbitrarily suck. Obviously all just my experience, but I’m excited for a future when I may be able to try a new headset, especially a valve index. The native res might be lower, but because of the weird problems my headset has with pc, I guaranteed it will be a night and day difference in the actual resolution.

Air link and virtual desktop make the experience so much better aswell. Once you go wireless, you wont go back. Very useful video, thanks :) , I think i will go for the valve index, I have a decent laptop now. I play my games generally on Steam. And for the full body tracking. I will try to get a nice setup in the small empty space i have in my bedroom (I should play facing my bed to avoid bumping my hands on the walls).

    Thanks for the video, I'm planning on upgrading my CV1 to an Index. Only thing that worries me is that although steam's tool to check if your pc can run the index says my pc can, I think my graphics card barely meets that requirement( RX580) and don't know if that will be an issue.

      I have an RX570 and most VR games I’ve played ran absolutely fine on my Reverb G2, which has a higher resolution than the Index. Just don’t expect to get 90fps super consistently, especially in higher quality games. (also I don’t play that many graphically impressive VR games so take my advice with a grain of salt 😅)

      Dude an RX 580 is perfectly fine for VR. Think I'm crazy? I, for shits and giggles, plugged my quest 2 into my laptop (i5 7300hq, GTX 1050 4GB) and got a not great but usable experience with lighter VR games. And that 1050 is more like a 1030 GDDR5 on the desktop. So yeah you're good man!

    I have a quest 2 and it's pretty good and even better when I turn on the highest resolution and gpu/cpu setting. Kids have probably dropped it heaps but it's absolutely fine. I think in general software and gpu/cpu have to catch up with what the screens can display. PS the strap is absolutely fine, I've never tried a different headset but Q2 strap is good.

      @@nervaproject I don't, but I don't like the compromises on all the headsets out right now. The Index is too expensive, the Reverb G2 doesn't have a great range of tracking because of camera placement, and the Oculus Quest 2 has *facebook* .

    • @nervaproject
      @nervaproject Před 3 lety +2

      @@PNolandS
      I don't think the Index is too expensive. The Index headset itself only costs $500, which is typical for a VR headset.
      The added price to the Index is for base stations and the awesome Index controllers, which are light-years ahead of what anyone else has on the market. They cost $500 because they're the best, and they're worth it. They are so worth it that other headset producers like Pimax, JVC, and HTC Vive are making their headsets compatible with the Index controllers or in some cases selling their headsets bundled with the Index controllers.
      This means if you get the full Index kit now and then a few years down the road a new headset comes out with a huge FOV and resolution, there is a good chance you'll be able to use your Index controllers and base stations with your headset upgrade. So about $500 worth of your $1000 Index purchase gets carried over to your next headset and gets re-used, potentially... adding value to your NEXT virtual reality headset purchase.
      The $1000 price tag looks a lot more reasonable when you consider half of it potentially gets re-used on your next headset purchase.

      @@nervaproject I get the controllers are good, but given that im about to head off to college next year im going to be moving around a lot for the foreseeable future. No matter how good the controllers are, they're just going to be more trouble than they're worth (for me).

    • @nervaproject
      @nervaproject Před 3 lety

      @@PNolandS More trouble than they're worth because of the price, or more trouble than they're worth because of the need to set up base stations and stuff?
      Also, if you're going to college next year, that sounds like a good reason to play VR right now... because you won't have time when you start college. And you don't want to be distracted with thinking about or playing on a VR headset while you're in college. (Trust me I know from personal experience... the desire to try out VR can screw up a semester). It's better to play whatever games you want to play before you go so that it won't distract you and you can "get it out of your system" as people say.

    I think ThrillSeeker's recommendation against buying the Rift S is right given the options, but it's not a terrible headset, and is currently my preferred headset. The quest 2 may have a higher resolution panel, but this is a compressed image coming through a USB cable vs a raw DisplayPort feed. Carmack said in a keynote that you will always notice the compression artifacts.
    While it is easier to put on the Quest 2, it's front heavy nature makes it uncomfortable fairly quickly. The Rift S is a bit tricky to get on just right, but once I do I could wear it literally all day. I could take a nap in this thing with the right pillow haha.
    If your eyes fit within the IPD, and your goal is truly only PCVR gaming, the Rift S is the most affordable and most comfortable PCVR headset bar none.
