- Hello. Today I have a video on the Varjo Aero. AS OF THE POSTING OF THIS VIDEO (subject to change as tech changes) this is probably my favorite VR headset I have tried even though it has some massive flaws. VR Technology is so much further along than we thing and this device is very exciting. I hope you enjoy my video on it and my views regarding it. I had so much fun testing this headset. Thanks to Varjo for letting me test it.

I turn 51 tomorrow, and this video actually made me a little wistful and sad. You guys that have 25 and 30 years on me are going to get to see so much really cool and amazing technology. By the time you're my age, full-body tracking suits, full motion gaming pads (treadmills), and lifelike visuals will be the *norm*, at reasonable consumer prices, and the "cutting edge" stuff you'll be experiencing is stuff we can't even *imagine* right now.
What we've got now is the kind of stuff I dreamed of as a kid, drowning myself in any sci-fi medium I could get my hands on. I'm so thankful and happy that I get to experience the beginnings of it, and at the same time, I wish I could be around to see what you guys will be experiencing and how mind-blowingly amazing it will all be forty or fifty years from now.
that is so sad :( My dad is also 51 and I constantly think of the things he won’t be able to experience about the future.
enjoy the most you can of it right now!!
With you there. We started with PONG and Pac-Man.
To be honest, I would say you would get to experience the best of the best VR tech as well. Just look back in the last 5 years and look at smartphones. The leap in tech is absolutely insane, mainly become of competition between manufacturers. Same is happening with the VR industry since there is more competition between manufacturers and that will only accelerate innovations. So I would say, look back at this comment in like 2025-2026 and you will surprised.
Many futurists believe BCI-powered full-dive VR will be possible by 2039, some have even said as early as 2029.
The Quest 2 has definitely spoiled me. The price/feature ratio is heavily on the Q2's side. It's definitely not perfect, but it's more than good enough. With that being said, I would like to see an affordable headset that isn't tied to a data mining company like Facebook. I'd love to see the Aero at under $1000.
Yeah, before Q2 I was like... I love Steam; Steam VR sounds interesting, but...is it worth it? $1000 is way too much just to find out. After a few months with the Q2, I'm a full blown VR junkie and am like, hell yeah I'd pay $1000 for VR... But for one that has to be plugged in all the time? That I can only use in one specific dedicated room? Are you kidding me? When I can take my Q2 on vacation and do anything from the Quest store on it, AND at home I can play Steam games and take advantage of my massive Geforce RTX graphics card wirelessly anywhere in the house? I too would prefer Valve or almost anyone over Facebook, but at this point, I don't see how it's a fair contest. $700 extra for what, slightly better FOV and FPS, and the mentioned disadvantages?
@@a8lg6p Give it a couple of years and these things will be built like laptops. A dozen or so manufacturers kicking out tons of models with a range of specs.
IMO that's why facebook is trying to get the jump on creating the meta verse, they want to establish their space in VR before the manufacturer wave hits. I think they want to control the idea of virtual real estate. Its a completely new asset class that will start to pop up as virtual reality gets popular. Someone has to host the servers...
The first thing I ask when seeing a VR headset is "Is it wired"? because of the Quest. I pre-ordered the Q1 because it was wireless. and until somebody comes out with a wireless VR system better than the Quest.... I'll just stay where I'm at.
@@a8lg6p Don't forget the superior controllers, audio solution and full body tracking ;)
@@DASPRiD I would love full body tracking... But not sure I want it $1000 dollars bad, especially when...what am I going to use it in, VR Chat? What's superior about the controllers, and what is "audio solution"?
The other thing is I got a Quest 2 for my gf who I won't live with for like about half a year, who doesn't have a fancy $2500 gaming desktop like I do. And we just got set up so she can use all my Quest 2 apps.
But anyway, if there's a Vive 2 in the next couple of years with a built-in wireless option, I'd be all over it.

This reminds me a lot of what I experienced when I got glasses for the first time, I never knew the world I was living in had so much detail. This seems a lot like that experience in a way.
I can relate so much. The first time I put on glasses I just stared at grass for 20 minutes, just in aww about how I can see the individual grass blades, and just how much depth everything suddenly gets.
I had this same reaction when I first tried contacts I cried and stared at my mother's face clearly for the first time
Same. To see the actual leaves on a tree was amazing.
Fr. First time I got glasses I just went outside in my backyard and stared at the bricks on my neighbor’s house for like 20 minutes cause I could actually see the lines and spaces between the bricks there. Couldn’t see the individual leaves on trees before from that distance either, just green blobs lol. Taking off the glasses and putting them on repeatedly for a half hour comparing the clarity
hahahaha
"Don't go into crippling debt for a VR headset." - Thrill
Ye. Let's move those words of wisdom to the front of the video, because now I need to call my credit card company.
If you can't afford this comfortably, it's not worth it.
At the rate that VR hardware technology is advancing there will be more top end headsets to talk about in just a few years, and technology like this will eventually become cheaper and cheaper, and more standard as time goes on. It may even take a bit, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was an average headset you could just go pick up within 10 years, specs wise.
Honestly, it's kind of hard to predict, things can only move so fast but the hardware just moves so fast.
The original vive was only 5 years ago.

Fantastic break down man. Give it 3-5 years and I think this will be the norm at the price of a console.
That would be amazing, especially if lower prices made vr a plausible device for school use. Imagine walking through a human heart with perfect clarity and getting to see big historical moments as a member of the crowd. It would be incredible.

Well said. I'm 41. I remember as a kid playing on an Atari 2600 infront of a boob tube floor model TV with the neighbor kid for hours.. I remember the playable display for the OG Gameboy at Walmart. The 3DO and VirtualBoy too. Got my own SNES, N64, GameCube, 360, PS3&4. All dinosaur hardware now. From my perspective, hardware wise, the first Occulus is to VR what the OG Gameboy was for gaming as well as gamers. Coming from that level of tech, to what you crazy kids have access to today is mind blowing. The techs acceleration of development in the last decade is truly impressive, the result of great minds combined with many long hours at work and vast sums of money.
I patiently await the day when most headsets are no bigger than a pair of meaty sunglasses. I'd be ok if all the VR hardware was actually just run off your smart phone in your back pocket or haptic vest. The headset would be composed of a set of screens and lenses only.
One day soon I'm sure. We will get there. And after that, the next logical step after haptics fully evolve is full neural integration with hardware. Probably VR/AR contact lenses at first. Wonder if I'll still be around? I'd spend $2000 on a headset, sure. It'd take a sec to set aside for one. Priorities first. Always.
Remember that no matter how good the virtual world is, you can't survive to play again another day if you neglect actual reality. Pay your bills. Take a shower. Eat good quality food, you'll live longer=game longer. Call your guardian figure on Legal Guardian Day.
Stay frosty.

I think its important to state that with the higher resolution a headset has, the more powerful your pc needs to be.
This 👆🏽
As headsets have integral chips that are more and more powerful, this point becomes moot. Look at the new quest (project Cambria) that has an inbuilt processor, and doesn't even need a pc.
@@jasbails9857 a high power pc will run circles around anything on a vr headset
except it doesn't work like that on this one since it looks at where your eyes are looking and renders those spots with full resolution while rendering the rest with lower resolution meaning it will get even better fps than the competition running lower resolution displays
@luimu you are right and wrong. Yes it renders where you are looking, but overall it's still way more pixels rendered than other higher end headset resolutions. It even says on thier website that you need a top of the line graphics card for this headset

Honestly, I'm really surprised that they actually made a lower-end model for consumers. Usually it's not even made available to us. I doubt I'd buy something like this, but if the FOV got better or if we could get a standardized wireless streaming solution that handled the huge amount of data necessary, it could be awesome. Having used the Pimax 5K Super and the CV1, I think I more lean towards needing wireless as a convenience to use the headset more often, followed by non-base station tracking. My play-space is very occluded a lot of the time, so I need something that can handle that, especially as the Pimax headsets have a hard connecting with/being seen by the base stations as-is for me.

I would totally pay 2k or for a headset, but the missing mic and 115 FOV is a deal breaker at this price... maybe if I try it I would change my mind
The missing audio and mic isn’t for me but the FOV is. If you can afford a 2k headset you can afford audio. Adding audio at this price level would be kinda pointless as the target consumers would just add fancy audio.
@@blueberrryy yes/no, having the mic on the VR headset makes life a lot easier, it's a convenience factor. Most lapel mics are annoying to use, and anything else is stationary, so pretty useless. VR headset is right in front of your face, so can pick up audio amazingly, e.g. Quest 2 has an amazingly clear mic, I would argue it's nearly better than my Blue Yeti X and if I don't have the mic positioned correctly, actually is.

@@blueberrryy No. After experiencing index like audio on the G2... I disagree. It's the other way. If a headset is made at 2k it Should include descent audio. However, I understand that this may be sold for simulator applications where this may not be a factor.
I think my biggest letdown on it is the 90hz. My stone age Index does 144hz and my cheap-o Quest 2 does 120hz. The device would cost over 3k in Canada, and for that price I don't feel like I should have to compromise on something like that. And yeah, now I have to put on headphones and get a mic too.

VR as a monitor replacement is one of the main things I'm excited for. I'm convinced it's coming and will be a big quality of life improvement in my work & entertainment flow once the right hardware comes along. Love seeing us get closer and closer with each new headset.
When I first tried Remote Desktop in VR, it was already mind blowing, wish I could add extra monitors in VR, that would be so cool
I've been trying vSpatial, and it's pretty cool... I can actually get work done in it, but like he says, the screen door effect is noticeable enough to be annoying, and the controls are clunky enough to slow me down a bit... But I can see how it could actually boost productivity with a better headset and/or when the kinks are worked out.
Having a blue light screen that close to your eyes, for that long is so bad for your eyes.
@@04dram04 Neither blue light nor having a screen close to your eyes are inherently bad for them.
What's bad for them is the constant distance. That's why doctors always recommend taking 5 Minute Breaks to look away from the Computer screen each hour.

I don't think Pimax got the 8K@90Hz mode for their 8KX headset yet. It's probably rather hacky to make that happen.
This video haven't shown the connector configuration of this headset. If it's also using a single Displayport 1.4 like Pimax do, then I doubt there would be high refresh rate available either. With Dual DP 1.4 or a single DP 2.0 though, that might be possible, but the latter probably requires a 30 series GPU to work.
I appreciate that you keep up on this tech like you do. I've given you a hard time in the past and apologize. The biggest issue with VR for me is the field of view. The day we get to fill our entire peripheral view, things will be amazing.

I loved your comment in the end about not getting in debt to experience VR, it really speaks a lot to me because I live in Brazil, I was in love the first time I saw the very first oculus headset, I used to imagine myself playing those games and experiencing VR, I was in awe when the first Vive headset was launched. Still to this day I want to experience VR so much, but here in Brazil a single headset can cost 8 full salaries, not including the PC which is more than that. My only option for now is buying the Oculus Quest 2, here is around R$ 3800,00 but still with another headset around the corner, I need to try and save every cent I can. I wish one day to experience the bleeding edge of VR, still for now it's just a Dream, but I hope it gets cheaper and cheaper on the future so I can finally experience it.
Heyy, I'm from Brazil too. I wanted a VR headset for so long and literally put months of salaries aside to get a Vive Pro.
It's, in fact, 8 full salaries + a high end PC, which gets quite pricey if you don't have any of them.
Long story short, after having the Vive, I discovered the Quest 2. It's a standalone headset which plays almost all VR games you can dream of, such as Beat Saber, VRChat and others. You don't need a PC (but you can plug it in one) as it has a CPU/GPU inside already! It's just as capable as any other VR headset, has essentially the same resolution, has pretty decent audio built in (but you can plug your 3.5 jack and listen with your earbuds if you want), and I must say, having literally tried both side-by-side, the features of the Quest 2 are *so* good, that I literally prefer it over the Vive, which is MUCH pricier. It's also a TANK compared to the Vive, which breaks just to look at.
You can get one on MercadoLivre NEW for R$3000 if you look around enough. However, if you have parents or friends which live in the USA or similar, you can get it for HALF the price, R$1500 - one salary. Yes, it's still a lot, but look, it's much more affordable, since you only need it and nothing more :)
You literally get to know the full blown VR experience with it, there are essentially no drawbacks compared to any other pricier headset. Even more as a beginner, it will satisfy your needs plenty ahaha
I hope this helps getting your hopes up! Take care!
Wow, this is exciting. I've been waiting for this since I bought my Vive 5 years ago.
The passion you have in your videos is phenomenal. I really hope that VR is going to be the tech that provides solutions to a lot of our social/logistical issues.
They will be including earbuds with attached microphone and the distortion should be fixed by the time they ship via updated software. For me… the one potential deal breaker is the narrow FOV compared to Pimax. Plus we have to wait not much longer to see what the other guys are about to reveal. It’s such an exciting time for VR! Thanks for this very well done video. 🙏🏼😎
Just a little funny that they market it at the launch event as a 'no compromises headset' but did not include a mic. That's a compromise, looks like it's worth it, though.
Bro - do you think it’s better than pimax8k x? Despite its higher resolution?
We can actually saw we were there to see vr take off
I don't think earbuds would come anywhere near the audio quality of, say, the Index, though.
Man this is freaking amazing to see. I already put a good amount building my pc Id honestly pay for this headset the no audio thing isn't a issue for me.
Best review on the net. Thankyou 👍
Absolutely just love your take and views on everything, already watched about 5 other reviews on the headset from other channels but yours wins hands down, been in VR since 2012 with dk1 and even my g2 isn't wowing me anymore, I know I just need this to fall in love with VR again but at this price point and all the extras I would need, plus I need a new gpu, can't make the jump yet 😢
get the quest 2 or wait for the new quest pro coming soon. It's the best bank for the buck and more worth it than this three grand headset in the video.
I'm waiting for the RTX 4000 series to come out before I upgrade my VR setup... headsets like this really deserve good driving hardware. It's going to be a hard time waiting for everything to release. The no integrated mic is a weird decision though.
I'm glad I found this channel. I am becoming hooked and realize VR is the future of my personal home entertainment and work set up. Yaw 2 and Kat-C are game changers. Add in the fact the VR sets are getting better, the future looks clear and bright.
To use VR for both work and pay, cant be good for your eyes
@@04dram04 I mean, I use VR quite a lot every day, and my eyesight hasn't gotten worse.
I saw your other video and just found this one! YES! Wishes do come true!
Saw this video, got excited, then saw the new pimax announcement and im excited to see thrill's video on that next week xd
Heck, you had me in tears with the last words. Great video, and I hope you’ll have an even better time in vr with that beast!
Awww
Me:
Oooh, nice looking headset
Later:
$2,000? Eh, if its worth it, I might have to-
No microphone:
Yeah nevermind
they shoot themselves in the foot every time they try to break through. still insane though
Really? It costs 20$ for you to fix that, but at this price range you probably already own great audio.
Personally I prefer it this way.
@@juggle5092 yeah like people who can afford this headset don't have | can't buy a mic for it
I haven wanting to upgrade my Rift for the longest time , was looking at the Vive Pro or the index but now i have a third option. Honestly the fact it doesn't have a mic or head set works for me. I have some great headsets with Mic that i would rather use. Thanks for the Video and info . great review
I love that Phia is chilling with you that’s awesome 👏 you guys and mystical are my favorites.
I have personally been a VR user since the Oculus Rift and I whole heartedly agree that this is incredible. I remember the day when I first got to try VR as a little kid and saying it blew my mind is an understatement. It is so good to see this magic of sorts finally becoming what I saw it as when I was little. I am going to wait to by this however, the ONLY reason being the price. Honestly though. I'm not even mad or even a little bit irritated, they just took a massive leap that I am super happy about.
Hello fellow highschool VR enthusiast
Great review of an amazing device. Can’t wait to get an Aero to test it out myself.
"Vaero" is nice lol
“Vaero”
This is honestly exciting! Don't know if it's because of the actual headset or your amazing storytelling skills
OMG! I’m already blown away by the Quest 2! I can’t imagine how good this headset is! 😄
