    I was there. The speed at which she skates is really remarkable.

    I can't believe she fell on her combo in the short and was still 4th!

    How did this beat Maria??

      You know how. Slutskaya was stronger technically both with her jumps and spins and skated with tremendous speed.

      @@DaveWesten-yh8rrAnd Maria tripped and fell.. I think that cost her the silver.

    Irina is a much better jumper than Tara. Tara had a roller skating technique. Irina has explosive jumps and gets tremendous height. The only thing that Tara had on Irina at this point was consistency.

    • @robjuddas3650
      @robjuddas3650 Před 6 lety +1

      She was more consistent with her triple-triples than Irina ever was though. Even at her peak in 2000-2002 and 2005-2006 Irina had inconsistent triple-triples especialy under pressure. If she had Tara's consistency with them she wins worlds in 2000 and 2001 and Olympics in 2002 and 2006 for sure.

    • @NIQ31
      @NIQ31 Před rokem

      @@robjuddas3650 It seems like Irina's technique cannot be as consistent as Tara's. The jumps are huge. It's very rare now. People try to rotate beforehand and not to jump up. It seems easier to be more reliable with such technique

    Kuddos to her for upgrading to two triple-triple combinations! That silver medal was well deserved ;)

    Irina was in 4th after the short and the last skater of the evening. Even if she won the free skate she wouldn't mathematically be able to beat Michelle, who was 1st after the short and so far in the free.

    In the old system, a skater in fourth after the short had to win and the leader (Michelle in this case) had to finish third or lower, so that wasn't going to happen. Irina was last to go so hypothetically, the lowest Michelle could finish in the free skate was second. Does that answer your question?

    Dick is terribly wrong! Tara Lepinsky's jumping technique just sucked... It worked because she was tiny and light. But the effort of using a wrong technique costed her a permanent injury at the right hip and she had to give up skating at a very young age...

  • @ChristineTheHippie
    @ChristineTheHippie Před 11 lety +4

    Yeah, her jumps were far from text book. The American Commentators never saw that, they were pretty biased. And really, why was it necesary to start praising Tara during Irina's performance?

    The QRs didn't count for anything back then. It wasn't until 1999 that it counted

    How did the commentators know that Michelle Kwan had won the Gold before Irina skated? What if she had pulled out a killer program like Sarah did in SLC?

      Interesting and boring

    • @grantgoffin4774
      @grantgoffin4774 Před rokem +1

      Since even if Irina won the long she was 4th in the short, and no other skater had beaten Kwan in the long, so mathematically she still wouldn't win even if she won the long.
