    Thanks for another great video! Our CVT tent Mt Shasta which is the same basic design has a bar that goes in the center of the entrance roof to hold the roof up. You might want to check with them and see if you can get one.

    Def on my wish list. But i came accross a hard shell that is pretty big. About the same size as your. Thats on my radar.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 5 lety +1

      Hard shells are nice because they're more aerodynamic and quicker to set up. The downside is they're usually either more cramped, or hang off the edges of the roof. The Overlander XL has a mattress size of 93"x75", which is huge!

    Love my Overland tent too - didn’t get the XL configuration and don’t have the sagging rain fly. Upgraded my mattress with a 4” memory foam mattress.

    I have the standard-size Smittybilt. It's 3 years old and has been mounted on the roof of the FJ the entire time. I have nearly 60 nights in it. I too have been very happy with mine. I need a new rain fly, as the original has holes from falling branches and is rubbed through in places from tight trails and road vibrations. Some of the seam tape is peeling. I modified the cover straps some time ago, making them longer. I added a zipper to one side of the cover to make removal easier, no longer having to deal with running the beading in the sail track. Also, I upgraded to a Tepui ladder. It offers more adjustment options for height and only required one additional hole to be drilled. Would I buy it again? Hell yes. The next step up seems to be a Tepui Kukenam, and it is $700 more than the Smitty.

      @RevereOverland  Před 5 lety +1

      That’s great to know! I’ve thought about adding zippers to the cover of mine to hold it down better.
      I’d probably buy mine again, but Hi-Vis Overland has one that I might have considered paying a little extra for if it were available at the time.

      ОѴƦԼχƝƊ I have a 2007 fj with stock roof rack, will this tent fit? Or I have to use other flat roof racks?

    • @ovrlxnd
      @ovrlxnd Před 5 lety +1

      @@co4x4 I took it to a local automotive upholstery shop I deal with. On the cover, there are two velcro corner flaps on the side that mounts in the track. We measured to the vertical center of the velcro area and cut the beading off the cover, leaving it with about a 3" tail. The zipper was then sewn in to the cover and the tail. instagram.com/p/BfUDvwZlci0/

      @@jw715 I had to get slightly longer bolts to secure the tent's crossbars to the OEM roof rack, but it will fit the OEM rack just fine! Being over 3 years ago, I don't remember what length they were. I do know that tent comes with metric bolts and I was only able to buy standard bolts in the correct length, so just know that's an option. Also, don't over-tighten things. You only need to snug the nuts up to where the plates just start to curve from the tension.

  • @Jbmagee

    Is there any space between the rain fly and the roof for air circulation? Other ground tents I have had that had the poles on the outside end up with a good amount of space for ventilation and air movement between the tent surface and fly on hot days.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 5 lety

      There's a small gap of 1 inch minimum between the two. It helps a little with circulation, but it's the side windows that do most of the work!

    Just got off the phone with subaru (I have a 2014 crosstrek) is it okay that the crosstrek roof is 176 lbs? Talked to subaru but they couldn’t tell me anything that wasn’t written explicitly in the manual. The ones that come on the crosstrek are 176 I believe, but obviously I am looking crossbars for this tent, it comes next week. Our total family weight would be like 530lbs. I can’t think that stationary it can only hold that much but he couldn’t tell me the weight stationary (all of us sleeping on it).

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 3 lety

      I'm not going to say you'll be fine, but I've seen Crosstreks with roof top tents. I will add that when I made this review, the Smittybilt was the best value tent on the market. Since then, there have been a bunch more come out for a similar price, but better quality.

    Can you tell me what supports the tent when its folded open? Is it the ladder?

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 4 lety +2

      Part ladder, part the way the hinge is constructed. For what it’s worth, there is a lot more competition with roof top tents now, and Smittybilt isn’t a good value as it used to be. I personally switched to Tuff Stuff, and you can get 10% off with the code RVO10.
