I have a 2008 E61 525i N53 engine. Since a huge idling, I have changed all the spark plugs and coils and then injector on cylinder 3! The engine is still idling a bit rough when the engine is warmed and there is no error. PS. the engine is idling perfectly like butter when the engine is cold. Will the firmware helps? Does the EXPERT MEMBER means "join"? I do have K DCAN Cable and INPA system.

Mate, thanks very much for your videos and help. Just checked on DVLA and by putting in my reg number, my e60 was showing a recall. I've booked it in next week for the loom and wiring to be checked and replaced as necessary. They will also give it a health check and clean it inside and out. All free of charge!
I bought the car a month ago and the car was in limp mode after a few miles. Got it checked and the vanos solenoid was showing as a fault. I've had my vanos solenoid replaced and a full service carried out now and the car runs like a dream but was shivering slightly during idling. That's what made me watch your video. Mate. Once again thanks a million!

How evil are BMW dealers to charge for the software update and not do it as a recall, since they created this issue for customers. And you are right about how they treat people here at American dealers. Man it would be nice to be in UK and have some breakfast at the dealer lol!

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Dean and his services! I can't imagine owning a BMW without ISTA D now.
I will say I did this update, and in the end my valve cover did need replaced in order to fix the rough idle whining Squealing vacuum problem, which began to occur at 80k mi. on hot starts. A very common problem with these cars. (Mine is a N51 E90 2011 328 xi). I would say if you're having rough idle, try this update (my idle was always very steady). If you're having the whining squealing, its most likely a cracked valve cover or broken air/oil separator, either way you'll have to replace the valve cover. Quick hack: If you have a heavy suction when removing the oil cap during whining squealing rough idle, you need to replace your valve cover.

    • @davidhenderson7433
      @davidhenderson7433 Před 4 lety

Yip, i just replaced my valve cover which comes with the gasket if bought from BMW direct, dont go buying the cheap Chinese clones as Dean has said time and time again buy BMW orig parts only. The crack seems to happen near the oil filler cap so check there. New valve cover for the N53 from BMW is £390ish non trade, ask them for a discount and usually you can buy for £340ish. From memory the torque spec is 8.5lbs on the bolts.

Hi Dean. I sent my car in to have centre prop bearing changed. 530d. E60. 05 plate. 231 bhp model. Now. I picked the car up it had a bad missfire. He showed me an ISTA critical level readout for injectors readout. Showing 2,3&5 were over the critical values. I admit I let the car get very low on diesel before dropping it off. So,..now. The prop bearing is fine. The missfire after putting £20 of diesel in and a full bottle of reddex started to clear. Still missing on one cylinder. My diagnostics showed up perfect injector values except for injector 3. Was showing + 5.1. Injector 3. After bleeding the injectors. Was bone dry. No fuel feeding to injector 3. I know it’s very possible I’ve dragged up some nasty stuff from letting the diesel get so low. What could be the reason that it’s cleared apart from injector 3. I hope you can help me bud cos I’ve spent so much money on this car. I don’t want to have to have a top end rebuild. Cheers.

I’m writing this comment before watching the video so if what I’m about to say is mentioned in this video then I apologize but honestly I’ve only seen one video and one only that has mentioned this item and showed it. Two check valves located on the bottom of the engine that require a T40 (torque 40) to remove and clean the mesh filters on them, it’s called the cylinder head oil check valve (non return valves). Super important to pull these and check their condition, if plugged with debris and burnt oil then obviously clean them until they’re shining, these being gunned up will cause fluttering/rough idle. The video I watched the vehicle had no error codes thrown, no check engine light and the owner replaced the coils, spark plugs, vanos solenoids, etc as maintenance precaution when first purchasing the vehicle used. There’s a circuit board under the hood on the passenger side, make sure that the box it sits in doesn’t fill up with water, the drain holes can clog very easily and once they’re plugged the box will fill with water and destroy that board as well as the wiring too. I just had mine cleaned out, new circuit board (used but newer than my destroyed one) and new wire harness, Nathan’s BMW Workshop has a video showing this very process, honestly between his channel and this channel (BMW Doctor) you can’t go wrong, a wealth of knowledge between the two of them. The video showing the non return valve removal and cleaning is by Warp Drive M - BMW N52 engine rough idle. Non return valves cleaned.

"I won't rev it too high cos the oil pressure hasn't come up yet" lol. oil pressure reaches normal in about 10 to 30 seconds, the optimum temperature however does take some to be reached. So you forgot to tell us, from which version or date the firmware onward got fixed? If you buy an used BMW, if the firmware in the car has been updated since the manufacturing, it doesn't automatically mean, it already has the necessary fix in it, does it? Obviously, if you are going to update it, you will take the latest possible anyway, but maybe it already has been updated and the problem lies still somewhere else?

Hello and thank you for sharing this information. I have a 2007 BMW 525xi e60 that I’m have issues on startup. It will take two or three times of cranking to start at any given time before it will start (long cranks) after it starts it may or may not idle rough for a few seconds and then drives great. I’ve recently replaced all the coils, spark plugs, crank sensor, fuel pump and replace the intake VANOS solenoid as I was getting a code for the intake VANOS. Now the car will start perfectly at times and other times it will do as before.
I’ve been reading everything and watching everything I can locate for this issue. I am considering removing and resealing the VANOS pistons but is skeptical about that may even fix it. Any chance that this firmware update could be the fix.
Yes, and I had to replace a couple coils prior for miss fire codes.
Any help at this point will be appreciated

I had cyl 1 doin NOTHING I mean NOTHING so I changed all 6 coils (because you, lol) glad I did and then x3 ran better but not 100% yet. Now its running like shit again and its cyl 3 that is useless.Prior to the coils I changed CKC Position sensor followed by Cam Shaft sensor then valve cover gasket meaning I changed valve cover as well as it comes as one unit after that I took manifold back off and replaced gasket(s) there as well, then coil packs as stated, plug, vanos, injectors , all vacuums lines are new and I even added extra ground wires to ignition coil harness and bought new battery. Finally today I thought there has to be some type of update or maybe I should have it tuned and then I decided to buy diag/coding scanner the Foxwell NT501 and then now I find this as im doing research ones again for my N52. Can I update firmware with the NT501 ? ty Im really hoping you I can cause im not paying 400$ to BMW from here that dont even take me serious (cause I look young) fuk them. Yup dealers here are a problem not only BMW but other brands. Had one fella told me his transfer case is not bad enough to to fix according to the dealer ( has a leak) . Another fella showed me won't name the maker his CVT trans. will roll backwards on a hill when he puts it in drive, no foot on the brake. I wonder why if BMW dealers are using ista-p is it for the money, but you can do it faster.

    Man,
I took my 2008 528i to Concord BMW for a recall and to inquire about getting the firmware update and I was set up with a special service writer, he was an asshole. He didnt introduce himself, delayed my car for a day for a simple PCV heater recall.
He wrote that he had washed the car when he didnt and did not provide me results for the multipoint inspection.
I went back to see him to schedule the firmware update for today and request the multipoint inspection results from him and tell him that he had not washed my car when he claimed he didnt. He lied again saying that he had.
Today, I went in to get the firmware update as we had scheduled and he was reluctant to take my car in even though I was paying him $260.
I ended up speaking with his service manager. The service manager asked me what would happen if that didnt fix my idle and I told him that at least I wouldd update the software from 2008. The asshole told me to take my car because he didnt want to get into it.
I gotta go schedule a firware update at another dealer now.
BMW dealers are assholes to the customers if you bring an older BMW to them.
My BMW, white 528i with black tinted windows and a white spoiler. The car looks so good that people ask me if its a new model. It didnt even need a wash but the service writer wrote that had had it washed. The principle is if you write down you did something, you better stand by your word!

Hey, I really appreciate your videos. I’m having a problem with my 2008 328 xi “no idrive” I started having trouble starting my car a few weeks ago. The car wouldn’t crank, but after I disconnected the negative terminal for a few minutes and reconnect it, it would start right up. And then one night suddenly, I got a very rough idle while driving. My wipers were uncontrollable, and my headlights would go on and off. Not to mention a ton of codes on my dashboard. And then the next day my battery was completely dead. I got a new battery installed. Started the car just fine, within one minute the rough idle came back and all the codes came back. And car died again that night. A friend of mine pointed me in the direction Of my ground strap? But the more research I do the more I’m lost. Please help!!!

    Hello ,
    I have a E60 N52
I could swear When I bought the car it did not vibrate.
Took it to the dealership as an exception- for oil change and get their “inspection”
Did the coolant flush and the brake fluid to get them to erase the cel maintenance
My car was also approaching 150K miles
Next day when I picked it up
I noticed big vibrations entering the cabin just in idle
They suggested I replace the mounts , When they were going over with me on the inspection
They also know I just bought the car. But they dont know Im actually an enthusiast that had bmws before
Do you think they messed with the firmware or anything else?
I replaced the motor mounts and trans mounts and still get vibrations at idle when warmed up

not sure if you are still answering questions on this video, but if you are i have one. I have the 2006 BMW 650i 4.8l on 75k on it. beautiful car, had some preventative maintenance done already like the valve cover and front timing cover seals and vacuum pump rebuild etc.. it does have a rough idle on cold starts sometimes. and it drives me nuts. i have started to throw a few parts at it, plugs, coils (and unfortunately I ordered new vanos solenoids valves) is this firmware update that your video describes the fix for this? I'm just unclear if this is only if you have constant idle problems, cause mine is always upon cold starts. engine starts up but sometimes starts galloping a bit but eventually smooths out. once it warms up, idles perfect and will start/stop fine rest of day, until it sits over night. then it might rear its ugly galloping head for a bit again. I hate that this beautiful car sounds like a pile of crap when I know its not. thank you for your reply. There's a decent shop that is owned by former BMW mechanics close to me, and if so I would like to show them this video and ask to have this performed to my car, thank you for your time and information. your doing the world a great deed by helping us in your videos!
