As a builder, one thing I always did when installing those particle board countertops was after cutting out for the sink and checking it for size, I would slightly sand over the edges of the cut to kill the sharp edge and put a couple of coats of Kilz2 to seal the raw particle board. I can't tell you how many times I have replaced those kinds of countertops where water got under the sink edge and swelled up and rotted the raw particle board.
Thanks for the tip. I actually installed a formica countertop last week. I took your advice and sealed the sink cutout but I also sealed the front under side edge of the countertop. I just used some clear water based Polly that I had in the van. I think this is a great tip and appreciate you sharing.
@@handylandlord You are very welcome!
Another thing along those lines is cabinet floor rot, most renters, even the good ones are reluctant to tell you about small leaks or other problems with the bathroom and kitchen cabinets for fear you might blame them for the problem, so, the first time I see some swelling or rot in the cabinet floor install a piece of 1/4" plywood that has been well sealed and painted and caulk it in the edges and corners. This takes way longer to cause damage as the water just sits there and it is more likely that the renter will alert you to it.
I always gave them lots of positive reinforcement when they reported a problem, it really saves me in the long run.
Good luck!
You’re a good dude !
@@rolandoreyna90 Thank you for your kind rely!
Thanks for that advice. Are you saying after rough sanding the old Formica countertop to put a couple coats of kilz2 on, then this paint?
This was a great video I learned more in the 10 minutes then some people going on and on for 30 minutes! Thanks for your time making it!
Thanks for the encouragement.
Yes! Very true!
Nice prep working. Like most jobs, 90% preparation, 10% execution.
Thanks. Absolutely prep is key.
Best Quote “WEAR A FULL ON RESPIRATOR” thanks!
From a guy who has building maintenance experience and a landlord. On the toilet zep acidic toilet bowl cleaner is the best. It made a toilet that hasn't been cleaned for 10+ year's look like new. Mildew, calcium buildup you name it GONE.
Absolutely, that stuff is amazing. I've used it on several toilets, also removed some rust/calcium buildup on a tub from well water. Worked wonders.
If you put your roller in a Walmart bag and place in fridge it won't get dry. I can walk away a week later come back and my roller will be fresh. Even with brushes.
Good tip. Thanks for sharing. The roller covers with this paint will kinda break down, so I just replace on second coat.
Wow! Good tip
Does that tip work for married men?
I know heat curing projects in the the oven or keeping fish bait in the fridge has led to “loving” discussion at my house…
Does it work with a Costco bag as well?
It only works with walmart bags, any other bag will make the roller catch fire
I like that you show every step, not assuming we know something. This was a very good video. I feel confident about doing my kitchen counters to get a few more years out of them before a complete remodel. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Thank you! I love your videos. Not so much talking..straight forward & you are a good teacher!! You make things look ‘doable’ for the DIY person
Thanks for the encouraging words. Sometimes it’s hard to find on the internet. Thanks for watching.
Really is a quick update, to get a bit longer wear out of this bathroom, I would also add a coat or 2 of clear sealer to make it a wear longer & bit of higher shine look. Looks good
Never new this product existed. Nice job, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Review video czcams.com/video/xgOQ4u05KQY/video.html
Very nice! Keeps it out of landfill, and easier than cutting and edging new counter top. I like being able to roller rather than spray paint.
🌺 GREAT VIDEO THANKS FOR SHOWING HOW YOU PREPED BEFORE YOU PAINTED. THAT WAS VERY HELPFUL AND YOU CAN DEFINITELY SEE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR WORK AND THE END RESULT BECAUSE OF ALL THE PREP YOU DID. I THINK YOUR COUNTERTOPS LOOK AMAZING!! THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DO THIS VIDEO. I HAD A GREAT TURNOUT ON MY COUNTERTOPS & SUPER HAPPY I DIDNT HAVE TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO GET A GREAT UPDATED BATHROOM. 😁
Happy it helped and your project turned out. I really like this option to paint instead of replace for an easy update. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for props to the (all important) prep work for a fine finish. It's worth the additional time.
I've done similar projects. When you clean the countertop, making sure that you wipe it down at least twice with 91% alcohol to really get all the dirt and grime off. Do this BEFORE you sand or else you'll push the dirt beneath the surface and seal it under the paint. You don't want that.
Beautiful. Ready to do my kitchen. Well ready for my husband to do it. Excellent pace and really liked the numerous tips.
Thank you for posting this. I just bought a house and the previous owners tiled and grouted the kitchen countertops. I pulled off the tile and need to sand the remaining grout off but I'm glad I found this video as this is what I'm going to do.
I did the same thing a few years ago. My stepmom was selling the house so we recovered the countertops with formica. The countertops had square corners and no backsplash so it made laying new formica possible. Good luck on your project.
My landlord would not replace our original 1960’s banana yellow countertops so I used this product to refresh the kitchen. It’s absolutely a suitable solution if replacement is not an option. I used foam rollers and had good results. The fumes are absolutely a real concern. I found keeping the lid on the can helped reduce the odor greatly. If possible, do 3-4 coats with several hours of drying in between. A week later I sanded it with about 320 grit sandpaper (auto body/glass grade). Overall I’m happy with what I got.
Interesting, he said do it within an hour or you have to wait 24 hours, so you found it better to wait a few hours in between? After you use the high 320 grit sandpaper later, do you go over it with anything else?
@@tinainnca I was painting an adjacent room and coating the countertops over a long weekend so I did 3 complete coats over a 12-14 hour period. I let it dry overnight with heavy ventilation and did touch ups the next morning. I let it dry for 2-3 days before putting anything on the surface.
To be fair, it’s a more delicate product than I hoped, but better than I expected. It’s a good short term solution to ugly countertops--like a flip house or an update until something new can be installed.
I did not re-apply after sanding. 320 grit is barely abrasive. I used it just to smooth out a few spots that had an orange peel texture.
*update* I did my countertops about 5 months ago and will probably do another coat soon. In particular, the heat from my coffee maker, friction from a cutting board and a place my belt buckle always bumps are all showing some wear. Alternatively, a small section where the microwave/air fryer sit are perfect. Abrasion and harsh chemicals are definitely your enemy here. This is a decent product, but it is what it is-a $40 band aid to hold you over until some other solution is possible. No regrets from me.
This looks great! I’m looking to do my kitchen counters because they are an awe full green bathroom tile. But now I know I have options, so thank you for this how-to video 😁👍
Did you do your kitchen counter top yet? Cause I was thinking to use contact paper on mines with a protective finish but after seeing this idk ...lol
@@nuckie_miamii
No contact paper , first time someone takes a green kitchen scrubby to it the pattern will come off and look like crap … ask me how I know
Great tutorial, easy to follow, and I like that you removed the caulk before you painted, not many channels do that and it makes a huge difference instead of paint on the caulk making the edges look messy. Thanks for the share, new sub.
And the sink...most don't even remove the sink😳
Thanks. Happy to hear it helped.
@@believeinjesus8862 I have no idea why my husband removed our sink but somehow he cracked the Formica. Our counter looks awful. I think I'll try this until we can afford a remodel. At least this is something I can do myself 😃 Great video!
lol tried this today on one of my rentals. I thought I was going to have to buy new countertops. This went extremely well. Got another year or 2 out of them. Appreciate it. Also did the regloss paint on the tub. Worked better than I would of ever imagined. Thanks!
Great!! Sometimes just have to kick the can down the road on replacing. What product did you use refinishing the tub? I normally hire a company to paint tubs, cost about 250 to 300.
Great video. Thanks. Your prep is top class, so I guess thats the reason the finish is so good.
I've been remodeling my apartment doing my own upgrades and this video was very helpful. Thank you.
Happy it was helpful for you. Thanks for watching.
@@handylandlord that’s great i am real estate agent and it’s always fun to watch any remodeling
After a long search, I just found exactly what I need to do. Big thanks.
No Problem. In my area the product has been hard to get. Good luck on your project.
Thank you! Nice, clear step by step instructions!
I’m so impressed n excited to paint my own stuff
Made a very effective difference. A little elbow grease and some paint made the counter attractive again. Also like the prep work. Nice job.
I definitely agree. This products works great for updating an outdated countertop. Prep work is key. Thanks for watching.
Just what I was looking for! Thanx now I can update my bathroom counter.
Wow! That looks great🙌🏼! Thank you for the tutorial! I think I can do this!
That’s a great idea - nice demo and finish for just paint!!
Thanks…that is an easy fix! There is a ton of Formica from the 90’s in my place that is nasty blues and purples that I want to change so badly. Cheers!
I know exactly what color countertops u are dealing with. U could always wait till it comes back in style. Haha
Great instructions. Well done. Just a heads up. When removing painters tape wet or dry. Keep the tape close to the paint. You were pulling towards you. If you stay close to the tape in front you get a cleaner edge. I like that you double taped it. Less likely to rip on removal. What was your timeline for replacing sink and using the surface? About to do my kitchen counters with epoxy appliance paint.
I sold this product when I ran a Home Depot paint department. Everyone loved it. But be warned this is one of the nastiest smelling products you'll ever use so be prepared to ventilate!
That's what I was going to ask...how bad is the smell? So, can I buy this at Lowes or Home Depot? And do you know if it last long time, or does it scratch/chip?
@@SometimeAgo65 commenting because I'd like to know lol
The smell is horrible!!! Its not so much the odor but the strength of it. I re did our bedroom dressers with this stuff and lets just say the windows open and fans were on. It took almost a month for the smell to go away. But the finish is amazing
That's fine. As long as it doesn't smell like shit, literally... and is durable and lasts a lifetime.
Yes the smell is bad. I’ve always purchased from Home Depot. I wear a full on respirator for automotive work normally. The unit is normally vacant.
Turned out very nice. Currently considering trying this with an ugly mauve-pink cultured marble finish bath sink. Not sure I'd paint a rental countertop though, because tenants using abrasive cleanser might ruin the finish. On the other hand, looks like some tenants don't know what Comet is anyway, yuck. (Rust-Oleum also makes a semi-gloss/gloss boat-bottom paint that covers fiberglass. This will probably be my first choice, experimenting. Boats take a real weather battering. But will compare these 2 paints regardless.)
Thanks for your energy
Very nice! Thank you for the instructions! I'm definitely going to do this in our bathroom!
Looks Alot Better!-Thanks for Sharing
Amazing difference. I have an old counter top and I might try this.
Nice to see someone taking the proper steps for doing a job right, even if it's a simple job. These days every time I hire someone they half-ass the job, so I just do it myself now.
Great video thank you for your time and the knowledge 👍
Looks great Handy! I always wanted to see how this product looks when applied. Nice!
The end result looks great! Just wondering how durable the new finish is. Has anyone done this 3 or more years ago? If so, did it chip or scratch? Thanks
Very informative & a great boost to a lousy countertop.
7:40 that is a GREAT tip I will use it now. Thank you. (Side note: use plastic wrap and do the same for leftover guacamole. It won’t get as brown/oxidized)
Thanks. I do really like guacamole.
Thanks for the tips. This looks like a pretty straight forward project. I'm looking to do my bathroom countertops in the next few months.
Keep us updated on how it turns out. Good luck on your project.
Is this waterproof?
You did a great job but I love that blue!
Great idea because I have a desk that I want to give it a new life so I am going to try and spray paint it
Great job 👍👍👍 you learn something new every day nice work
Not bad, only thing I would add is you should delint the roller with some tape before you start painting. Looks way better
That looks great, very good job
Helluva transformation! Looks great!
Thank you!
Excellent video.
Thanks for sharing.
Great job and great tips! Thanks!🙏🏾
It looks so good.
Awesome job, looks amaizing!!
Thanks
Man...reading these comments. Everyone's an expert lol. Nice job man! Thanks for making this video.
Haha. You know!!
That was awesome! Thanks
I own my condo and want to paint my kitchen countertops! Didn't turn out too bad what you did, especially for a small restroom!
Looks Great..love the color.
Great info Sir. Thank you very much!
Looks good. Great job.
I like his detailed work. Wish I could hire him to renovate my house in South Carolina
Haha maybe I’m going on vacation to Hilton head in July. I don’t think my family will miss me if I work on your house while they are at the beach.
Great job, it looks awesome. I can't wait when the big beard trend is over the same way the blue countertops are.
Thanks. Maybe a new trend for 2022? hahah
That looks awesome compared to the original blue color. I got to try this. Thanks for sharing this video!
Don't do it. My wife insisted that using this product would make our counter top look more modern so I let her do her project. It looked ok for the first few months and then started to chip or get dull from cleaning. At the two year mark I got out my razor scraper and removed it all. The original counter tops were much better than this crap. Maybe in a rental but not in my house.
@@sergioleone4215 Thank you for sharing your experience. I have to reconsider doing this project thanks!
Great detail pointers - TY
This was a very helpful video. Thank you.
Thank you for watching
That looks great and it looks like this paint works. They must have come out with a better product. Years ago I tried to paint my formica kitchen counter. I believe the guy sold me a primer and a special paint. Unfortunately it started chipping. The product did not go on as smoothly as yours.
Looks awsome...I am going to do that to mine! Thanks!!
Good luck on your project. Thanks for watching.
Very nice! Wish my property managed would let us update the counter tops.
I used this paint on a kitchen counter in a rental 11 years ago. It still looked pretty good when she moved out.
Did you use a sealant after painting? I am asking because I noticed a few comments that said it's not very durable and starts peeling.
Thanks very much, you have done a great job :)
I think the blue countertop looked cool with the sanding marks! LOL!
Haha
Looks Really Nice 👍 👍👍. Thank You for sharing 😁
Thanks. The product held up better than expected imo
Nice ... love the color.
That looks great
Awesome. Its beautiful.
Thanks. I’m working on a video spraying this product on.
Great Video... Thanks !!! I trash picked an old countertop that I am painting as a breakfast bar... Woohooo..😄
To finish off the look and hide the damaged mirror. I go to the hardware store and buy a scrap piece of trim and glue it to the lower side of the mirror. It look nice and hides the damage. I like how you used the multi tool to push in the tape.
Thanks for the tip. This mirror is old. Pushing down the tape with the 5 in 1 really helps to get a clean line.
my apt sourced , plastic strips clear , mirror , w inner bevel , 1.25" x 1/4 inch . they hit the bottom and sides , looks good , WAY better than the discolored edges
Great job, removing the sink makes it much easier to put the paint
Yes it does. I had to remove the sink to replace the cabinet under the sink. Thanks for watching
That looks fantastic!
Thanks
It is
Helpful. Thanks!
Good job, looks nice
Thanks for the video, getting ready to do this to my bathroom countertop… finally getting rid the awful hunter green color
Nice work man

Like that hand held paint container! Mine does not have that slant that is a much better one!
Looks good.
This is exactly what I'm looking for. I like the color of the counters, but that's basically what color I was going to paint my cabinets. Maybe I'll have to go with a light color for the cabinets.
U could select a different color for countertops. Several selections on the back of the can. Thanks for watching
Wow! Great job guys! Want to come do mine? Lol😂 The labor is just a lot, but worth it😊
That is so dope
Thanks for sharing
Very nice job 👍
Thanks
Nice work
Thank you for the informative video. I have a pink and stained countertop that I’d like to paint white.
Never seen a pink countertop.. only yellow and blue. Will probably look a lot better white. Not sure if you can buy the can off the shelf already white? Please let us know. Thanks
I ended up ordering white Beyond paint and sealer just to try. I’m going to replace the vanity in a few months. It’s an experiment while I decide on a vanity.
It looks even more amazing if you pour some epoxy after onto of the painted finish
Great video...Even with your vacuum on you should have atleast have on a dust mask. The "plastics" used in old Formica can really jack up your lungs. Just a safety tip..
Man what a difference!!
A little better than the old blue countertop. Haha
