Spa F1 Circuit History, Crashes and Onboard Old layout (FULL LAP 1962)

- SPA is celebrating 100 years since its first ever race so I decided to do something special...
In this documentary you will find a rare complete lap onboard in the old Spa-Francorchamps circuit, its complete history and a compilation of the most famous crashes and some rare ones too.
I used and combined 4 rare films to complete the onboard video. Technology was way different back then... It´s not easy to synchronise them and even in the long film there are cuts that are not always possible to cover with other footage. Anyway, we have a full lap, except for 150m.
With 100 years of history, I did a lot of research to finish this video but, even so and, in order to keep this video short, lots of stuff were not mentioned/displayed but you can help others mentioning known stuff I missed in the comments section. I also had to try to keep this copyright-free as much as possible so options had to be made...
Lots of crashes in this amazing but killer track. Mainly in the old layout. I tried to include as much as I can but I had problems with copyright and had to cut some of them in the final version. I had to upload this 4 times...
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it!
Time Machine:
00:00 introduction
01:44 a full lap onboard in the old layout
10:29 complete history of the track
34:18 big crashes
I mentioned in this video the Riverside F1 Track video I made. Instead of inserting its link here, I think it´s more interesting to let you know that it is included in this playlist with more than 20 Onboard videos on old F1 Circuits:
• Monza Oval Circuit in ...
I also mentioned a 1933 Nuvolari/Ferrari/Maserati story that is not 100% correct and it was rectified in this video (from the playlist Amazing Racing Stories) "The Ferraris that were different" - • The Ferraris that were...
Cheers from Portugal!

10 Things I miss in Modern F1 - czcams.com/video/RhZMQFDMqnA/video.html
This is an absolute historical masterpiece. I fully appreciate the huge effort that's gone into researching this....a fascinating 42 mins, bravo.
Wow, thank you! Cheers from Portugal!
It’s an incredible video! I’ve come back to it a second time and watched the entire video again.
Pay the man
Wonderful!
I completely agree. I rarely comment but this is absolutely fascinating. Thanks. I'm going to subscribe in hopes of seeing more educational, classic footage of motorsport. I dig your narration, research and thoughts giving the rarely seen films some insightful context. Just a real down to earth relaxed voice. Shout-out ourafilmes from Seattle WA. ✌️
One small nit-pick, Jo Bonnier's crash in 1966 as shown in the footage from Grand Prix, is the actual aftermath of the real accident, not a recreation. The film crews were actually at the Belgian GP that year to film footage for the movie, they were filming the start of the race when the now famous rainstorm took place. The chaos the cameras captured was included in the film, because it's amazing footage.
Great info! I did not know that! Thank you!
Man I wish we had a way to truly not lose information from the people actually there. I would love to just talk to so many people that were there.
I love that movie. Lemans and winning also great movies. I have them all
It's a mystery for me that considering how many historical racing videos I've searched for and watched on youtube, I never got this video suggested until today. Your video's a masterpiece on one of the most interesting circuits that's ever existed. Thank you.
Welcome aboard! YT search/in general is BS nowadays! You can see that there are lots of videos about it. I mention that in my latest video although the topic is different! Thanks! Cheers from Portugal!
Brings back a lot of memories, as a Dutchman we spent a lot of our holidays in the Ardennes and I remember just driving along in our DAF 33 with 3 kids in the back being passed by race cars.
Nice one!
I am from french Flanders, the car of the family was also a Daf 33 in early '70, so i understand very well what was your feeling at this place!
Outstanding what a track and film ! I have dreamed of Spa francorchamps almost sins a was born in -51. To sit at Eau rouge and in 2009 my dream came true and see Kimi win.
It will never be a track like Spa. Thanks from Sweden.
Many thanks for your words Christer! Spa is beautiful! Cheers from Portugal!
Spa is synonymous with this man, he won there four times in a row - JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was "The Best of the Best" (Fangio and Senna about Clark). No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark - No other driver as so much "Grand Slam" - Pole/Win/Fastest Lap/Leading every lap of the race - like him. And all that from just 72 starts... !
This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius...
I like Jim Clark but he hated Spa, as far as I know. True, he had impressive numbers but he was too clean for my taste! I prefer crazy and extravagant drivers like Nuvolari. Thanks for your input.
@@ourafilmesJim Clark hated Spa, because his friend Archie Scott Browne died in Clark’s first race there. Scott Brown must have been an amazing man. He was born disabled due to rubella. He needed multiple operations on his legs to be able to walk, and only had one hand! But he was quite a driver apparently.
This is the best track documentary I've ever seen, and I watch every one that I can find!
The sheer quantity (and quality) of period specific photos and film must have taken forever to assemble. The track tour using multiple films, windows, photos, and little pop up info items was wonderful. I know I'm sounding hyperbolic, but I know how much work, thought and editing that it must have taken.
Your love of the track really shows, and the little tidbits of information along with historical comparisons of the track layout using postcards, and overhead views from what must have been very primitive aircraft.. well, it's amazing. Where on Earth did you look for all your visuals?
Then, you do a great job of maintaining the historical flow of the story. I could go on and on. Very well done! Naturally, I'm a new subscriber, and thank you so much.
PS: Thank you for NOT imposing the obligatory musical sound track. Your narration was right on, understandable, and very enjoyable.
WOW! Many thanks for your very detailed comment my friend! To finish this, it took me more than 1 month working 12 hours a day on it. But, unfortunately, I had to remove about 7 minutes because of copyright issues that I could not avoid.
I learned my lesson so I tried a different approach on the Monza video also because there is a lot of footage for that track as the Italians always were crazy for racing.
I have 2 jobs so sometimes it is a bit of apian to work on these after work...
Thanks for watching and for your nice words.
Cheers from Portugal!
Thank you for one of the best history lessons!!! Enjoyed every second of this documentary. Nicely edited :) onboard video and height map of the track were very cool to watch
Glad you enjoyed it! There is more rare footage in my latest video - also about Spa! Cheers from Portugal!
Awesome!
Great footage. Thanks. What a circuit the old spa was. The great Brian Redman used to pray for deliverance the night before he raced there, and barely slept a wink….and he had huge courage as a driver.
Man, I think all drivers should pray a lot the night before. One thing is certain: I always heard that, in the old days, the biggest parties were held at Spa when nobody died during the race.
A beautiful bit of video work! Simply amazing - thank you for keeping the memories of the old Spa circuit from disappearing into time.
Glad you enjoyed it. And lots of stuff was not mentioned! Cheers!
Thanks for this video. I'm from Belgium in origin and I love this circuit - my favorite one in race simulation. I knew of course an older and longer circuit. I knew of an interruption of F1 in the middle of the 70's the circuit considered to dangerous and the Belgian GP taken place in Zolder - which ended with the death of Giles Villeneuve and the circuit of Francochamps rebuilt. But I knew very few of the details of the history. this video had filled many gaps and must have taken quite some time and a lot of effort in finding footage. So thanx for making this
Hi Richard. I am glad I was able to help. I learned a lot myself while doing it.
Cheers from Portugal!
Great Video, You sure put in the time and effort producing this content. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Yes, lots of work on this one! Cheers from Portugal!
Thank you for all of the time and effort to create and string all of this footage into a complete show! This was a great history lesson.
Our pleasure! Cheers from Portugal!
Ein wunderbares Filmdokument.....Vielen Dank für diesen Post......
Dank!
FANTASTIC compilations of the long track, Thank You!
Glad you like it! A lot of work on this! Cheers from Portugal!
Spa is truly a wonderful circuit, not because of its reputation but because it has such iconic corner an complex names, my favourite being Eau Rouge, the names just roll off the tongue, brilliant video, thanks for sharing 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for tuning in!
Fantastic video. Loved the info and all those historical photos - fascinating. Loved the track change parts you did. Thank you for all your hard work in researching this. Additionally, I enjoyed your history of filming options and cameras throughout the years.
Many thanks! Cheers!
Took me an hour and an half or more to watch a 45 minute video because I had to pause and rewind so many times... and that isn't a complaint. There was just so much history to take in here. Thanks for your effort. Great video.
Fair enough. I thought you disliked when I was reading it. LOL. Thanks. Cheers from Portugal!
My friend, this is a simply spectacular historic document. Thank you so much for your research and erudition. Please make this important resource available to some important museum of racing or transportation. It needs to be preserved for the ongoing appreciation of motor sports history.
Many thanks for your kind words! Cheers!
Next to Monza,Spa is my favorite classic F1 circuit. After being able to drive the classic 1962 version on Project Cars 2(Playstation 4,Fanatec racing wheel) it's so great to see all this footage and an actual entire lap.Huge respect to all who had the nerve to actually race here and most of all to the many who lost their lives doing what they loved.thanks so much for this video, fine job kind sir!
Thanks for your nice words! Get ready for Monza! It´s the next one. Subscribe and wait! Cheers!
One of the most interesting videos I've ever seen. Thank you so much for compiling - and uploading - this video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks fo tuning in!
Obrigado Brasil!
Fascinating. You have done so much work to create this and I can see it was a labour of love. Well done.
Thank you very much! Cheers from Portugal!
Just stumbled on to this posting. It is as absolute a masterpiece! So great full to the effort put in to it. Thank you for your efforts. I will watch it over and over to study it. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, this is such a complete and fantastic history of this amazing track. I had been searching literally for years for footage of the old configuration of eau rouge/raidillon where the track bore left to the hairpin.
Amazing seeing all the photos from when the whole circuit was just country roads.
Brilliant.
You're very welcome! There is more rare footage in my latest video about Spa. Cheers!
Thanks. I will give it a watch. You have really given some of the historic tracks the justice they deserve with your historic footage and documentaries.
What a marvellous segment. Starting in the mid sixties till the late nineties I was at Francorchamps for F1 Grand Prixs, the Spa 1000 sports cars & prototypes and of course the Spa 24 hours touring car races, I don't know how many times. What great days they were. You did such a splendid job expelling the track's evolution with the limited footage available. Keep it up. I have lived in Western Canada since 1997 but still view Francorchamps as the most beautiful track in the world.
Thanks. Cheers from Portugal!
love the fact that people just chilled out on the side and gone about their days like this is just another day in life👍
Yes, that´s how it was. Just like the WRC until a few years ago! Cheers!
Excellent video and very informative. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together. Especially liked the then and now photos. The house in the pit area I did not realize was left over from the old times. Great circuit and if you spend some time going into the woods near the circuit you can find more history (i.e. battle of the bulge relics). Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Portugal!
Ah thank you for sharing this. I used to go watching the races with my parents on the old circuit near Masta. For many years I used to ride on the raidillon every time they opened it in preparation for the races and passed every day la vieille douane and la source to go to work and it was still possible to use the Stavelot turn when I started riding. Congratulations for the quality of your information.
Very cool! I envy you mate! Cheers from Portugal!
A stunningly good Video with some fantastic photo-plates and great movie footage too. Well done Sir, a tour de force indeed.
Many thanks! Cheers!
Outstanding course and outstanding work on your part. Bravo, keep on producing!
Thank you! Cheers!
A lot of work has been done to put this together, great work, especially enjoyed the footage of a complete lap at beginning.
Thanks a ton!
SPA is my all time favorite F-1 circuit, especially until 1968. I was at the track ; no racing going on, back in 2003. Excellent video!
Very cool! I love Spa!
I couldn't believe it when I heard they were considering dropping the SPA from the calendar after 2024!!!
GREAT video
Yes! Thank you! I think it was just politics...
Really enjoyed this excellent video. Thank you for your research and for sharing!
My pleasure! Cheers!
Awesomely put together. I really enjoyed this. Great history lesson. 10/10
Much appreciated!
Extremely well done labor of love here. What an amazing - and dangerous - historical track. The F1, sports car, and other motorsport drivers who did this track (and others) back in the pre-safety era are truly a totally different breed of human being. Even today on the modern Spa circuit, seeing drivers attack this circuit in bad weather is just... Well, again, it takes a different breed of human being.
Yes, a lot of time to finish this one. Thanks for watching! Wet Spa is only for men, not for boys!
Congratulations ! Excellent summary of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit...
Many thanks! Cheers from Portugal!
Fantastic view, thank you!! I love the history of the old race tracks. We have so very very little of that in america. We could learn so much from you
Thanks for your nice words. Get ready for Monza! It´s the next one!
Love love love the old and newer comparison 👍👍👍👍👍
Ii was there in 1985 motorcycle 500ccGrand Prix as working mechanic for an American rider M. Baldwin. I jogged around the track taking photos along the way. Treasured every view and savored every moment. Thank you for your artistry 🏆✌️🇺🇲
Very cool! Thanks!
This is fantastic, thank you very much for all the hard work!
Our pleasure!
Amazing video mate, analysis , footage , history. Perfect.
Thanks a lot! Cheers from Portugal!
Thank you for putting together this video. I truly appreciate it being a lover of auto racing and specially F-1 Racing. I cannot thank you enough.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Very welcome!
I'm relatively new to F1. I've only been seriously following the sport for about 4 years. I really enjoy the history of the sport so this is phenomenal.
Thanks for watching. Actually, original version was 8 minutes longer and much better but due to copyright issues I had to delete a lot of stuff... Thanks for watching!
This is so good, thank you! Top quality 5 stars AAA content right here.
Thank you too!
Thank you for putting this together.
Thanks for watching!
Absolutely fascinating. A lot of work has gone into this video. Many thanks for sharing!
Many thanks! Tons of work on this one, yes. Cheers from Portugal!
Thank you very much for this and you explain things well. The old circuit was certainly frightening, daunting is a good description and the drivers were different to us, so brave and courageous. Thanks again, very interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Portugal!
A outstanding piece of video footage over the decades. Well done my friend..... A1 👍🇦🇺
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
This is a marvellous documentary and includes much rare vintage footage so the author must have invested a lot of time in research to source all the material. Spa has always been my favourite circuit on which to drive a race car and you don't perceive how steep the hills are when you watch film footage. It's still a favourite circuit with current GP drivers so let's hope the governing bodies don't get too greedy for cash and award the 2023 race slot to an obscure, characterless track in the Middle East or Asia just because they bid more money.
Politics my friend...But I think Spa alone can beat all that BS.
Very enjoyable video & look forward to watching more.. I started watching F1 back in 1958 & never been to a GP but will always love the sport & watching this type of video makes everything memorable to us all.. because in those days drivers were real drivers... Jim Clark was to me the greatest & Tazio Nuvolari was born 4 miles from my late father..
Glad you enjoyed it! I have a playlist with more videos like this - check the description. Mate, to me, Tazio Nuvolari was the best driver of all time and by far! After a big crash he escaped from the hospital by fooling the doctors and took a taxi to do the GP on the spare car to finish 7th; winning a motorcycle race with both legs broken and plastered; winning the German GP of 35 with an outdated car with 100hp less - an impossible task; the only driver who could handle properly the Auto-Union rear engine car; being 50s, very sick and still leading the Mille Miglia and being 27 minutes in front of the other Ferrari, and so on... Only a World War could stop him! They don´t make them like this anymore!!! Cheers from Portugal!
@PaulAJ; I absolutely agree with you Sir. Jim Clark is my #1 choice as the greatest racing driver in history!
Modern TV-based F1 would absolutely hate Jim Clark. His usual method of winning a race would be to get pole position and then after the race start, motor off into the distance leaving the rest of the field behind, and set the fastest lap along the way. Didn't he win one Belgian GP be something like 4 minutes and in his famous 1965 Indy 500 win by two complete laps?
@@twillis449 Yes, little film and also info. They were true heroes just by racing on those conditions!
@@twillis449
Correct. In 1963 Jim Clark won at Spa by 4min., with car No. 1 in the rain.
And as you said he won the 1965 Indianapolis 500 by two laps over previous winner Parneli Jones.
At minute 7:02 in 1970, my family was standing on the tracks off to the left, watching the Spa 1000. Have photos of the cars whizzing by, and one of the Porsche 917 #24.
This is an incredible video.
Thanks for making it.
Very cool! Cheers from Portugal!
Amazing video!! My dad and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for making it.
Glad you enjoyed it! I would love that my dad loved racing! But he always knew Fangio was the master!
Absolutely lovely, the old track and your work, men, it's noted that you truly love this sport. The reference of Seaman is delicious, I love racing in that era. Congrats!
Thanks for that! Since that release I found out that they organised some Seaman Trophys (motor races) in the 60s so I was glad that the British ended recognising him as a great english historic racer and not messing about the war and his career. It´s not the drivers fault that the nationalists are in power during their racing career...
What an effort, thank you for this great video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Portugal!
Brilliant film making, you have a massive talent for this pursuit. I hope you can make many more such films and be paid well for doing so.
Many thanks for your nice words mate!
Your vintage poster collection is second to none. Just fantastic.
Wow, thanks! Cheers!
Ive allways loved spa circuit, in 1976 i drove around the full circuit in my truck/tractor unit as i was delivering a load nearby the next day,.ive been close to spa on many ocasions since then when doing motorcycle track days at mettet and the nurburgring, its still on my bucket list to do a trackday at spa,. thankyou for your exellent video on the history of spa,.
Very cool! Cheers!
Hello, THANK YOU for this historical view!
Thanks for visiting! Cheers!
Fantastic work! Thank you very much indeed!
Thanks Mario!
Astonishing, Superb film(s) and History ...Can remember the film `Grand prix` and seeing again here the `shots` some beautiful cars too..Well done.
Thank you so much 😀
Well put together video mate👍👍
That 6 cylinder sounded on song, love the sound of the British and European sports cars and grand tourers from the 50s n 60s.
Thanks for your nice words! Cheers!
Truly amazing! Deep respect to anyone who ever raced there. Like the Nurburgring and Le Mans they remain the monuments of motor racing.
Yes, drivers were true heroes back then. Thanks for watching!
Just awesome! Thanks for share this incredible matherial! Hugs from Brazil
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Wow!! Amazing video. Thank you for that great history lesson.
Our pleasure! Cheers!
brilliant footage of the track in 62. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
One of the best video's i have ever seen. great job.
Wow, thanks! Actually, original version was 8 minutes longer and much better but due to copyright issues I had to delete a lot of stuff... Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, nice work finding all the footage,
Thanks mate! Really hard work on this one!
Fantastic images! Well done, thank you.
Many thanks! Cheers!
fantastic video ,, one of best i have ever watched,,, thank you very much for excellent effort
Thanks. Cheers!
What a brilliant video so much work to compile, I remember the late 60's onwards and I was always in awe of this circuit with the speeds, the rapid changes of weather and the appalling accident statistics. Like the original Nurburgring Nordschleife, these two circuits are legendary and reward and punish in equal measures.
Nice words there! Cheers!
Awesome!! Been there but only for the new layout. The history on this video is brilliant.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Portugal!
Fabulous information of a favorite race course. Excellent detail.
Thanks. And I had to cut some stuff due to copyright...
Simply a great film. Tank you for the work!!
Our pleasure!
Thank you very much for presenting such an excellent video. Your commentary is eloquent and easy to listen to. Your knowledge of racing is extensive. I liked the section withe split screen showing the same parts of the circuit in different years. It is sad that racing loses so many drivers for as many diverse reasons as there are people who drive.
So nice of you. Many thanks. Lots of work here as there is a lot of history in there. Cheers from Portugal!
Great video, thank you very much!
Thanks mate. Many, many hours of work on this one! Cheers!
Wonderfull Video, Thanks for the lot of Time to make it.
Jürgen
Thanks for watching and for your nice words Jürgen.
Beautiful course, with real cars, making real sounds, in a real time period. It was much better then, wasn't it.
Absolutely. But long gone... They should make an historic race using the old course! Particularly now that the circuit is 100 years old!
fantastic film and narration of the times many thanks for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it. Lots of work here. Cheers from Portugal!
Fantastic effort. A lot of footage I've not seen before. Hugely interesting. Well done indeed.
Many thanks! Cheers!
I'm a total car freak and this is an excellent video, thank you for compiling it. As much as i enjoyed the history of the Spa course, I was especially taken aback by the reference to Malmedy. My great uncle, as an infantrymen for Patton, was among the first platoon to discover the massacre of Us troops at Malmedy. Although it doesn't satiate my thrill for motorsports, it should give all of us in the US pause.
Spa has a lot of history. Cheers from Portugal!
beautiful video, great work. thank you
Thank you too!
Very cool footage! The track has changed so much it's amazing. Very sad! 🏁
It really is! But they kept some of the best places!
Amazing work. One of my favourite circuits that I have visited both for F1 and Endurance racing. Really interesting to se the history and how the circuit ahs changed over the years.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
wonderful work and research. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Portugal!
That was an awesome vid
Much appreciated
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Wow. This is excellent! Thank you a ton. I have to tell some friends about this.
Thanks for sharing!
Extraordinary video of extraordinary historical significance of an extraordinarily jinxed track. Thanks from Oregon USA.
Our pleasure!
Parabéns pela qualidade e profissionalismo do trabalho!👏👏👏
Muito obrigado pelas suas palavras!
Great video history lesson, based on one of the greatest tracks to grace F1. Top marks sir.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Portugal!
Wow, the effort it must have taken to make this amazing video. So so good.
Wow, thank you!
Wow that looks like it was a bunch of editing work, 👏 great job!👍
It was! Cheers!
Very wonderful video. Congrats!
Thank you very much!
Thank you sir for a wonderful film.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Portugal!
Great documentation! I learned a lot about the old route!
Glad it was helpful! Cheers!
Amazing video man!
I appreciate it! Thanks for the visit! Cheers from Portugal!
Your channel is criminally underviewed. I hope you get more attention
Thanks for your nice words mate. Yes, I tried to grow it but I fell that I failed so not much attention here these days. Maybe next year I am more motivated...
@@ourafilmes dont blame yourself, its the CZcams algorhythm which has failed you!
This is an excellent video narrated bu someone obviously born and raised in New York City. I also enjoyed the stuff about the cameras used long ago. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it but I didn´t get that NY stuff! I am portuguese! LOL!
Fantastic video Thank You
Many thanks! Cheers!
