I love red geraniums in terracotta pots!! So classic and beautiful!
Same. In Granada, Spain they paint the pots blue every year and hang them on their balconies and walls with geraniums. In the heat of the summer sun the flowers and blue pots have a pleasing effect on the eyes. The walls are painted white and everything just pops.
I vote for keeping the sprinters small so the Russian sage is the star and there’s room for annuals 😍 that throw back picture was beautiful!

Always enjoy when your cats make an appearance in your beautiful gardens! We use a back scratcher to pet one of our cats who likes to swipe at us, he loves it.😊
I'm trying to domesticate a couple kittens who took up residence in my garden shed. One will get within inches of me and then dart away - the back scratcher idea is brilliant!

I’ve seen some people cover their hedges with soaked burlap. So that they have time to recover. They look so sharp trimmed up! Almost as sharp as Douglas claws. 😂🐈⬛

Douglas seems to want luvins all the time. My thought is he swipes because he doesn't want you to stop petting him. It's like he's grabbing your hand back toward him, "Hey, keep petting me!" 😂 That is my guess with all the cats I've had through years. He is BEAUTIFUL.

This is Douglas. Just like Cheddar, he showed up one day early this spring (curled up on the chaise lounge in the front sun porch to be exact) and just kind of stuck around. I honestly don't know if he belongs to someone else- he is very sweet and looks good- but he certainly spends the bulk of his time here (much to the dislike of Russell & Cheddar). Anyway, I thought I would make the introduction since he has made himself more and more of a presence. So, apparently we have 3 cats now...

I've always liked red geraniums because of their vibrancy. Yes, they can be messy, but sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad. And boxwood, they add so much structure and privacy to my garden. I planted them nearly 24 years ago as tiny plants. Now they are quite large and beautiful. Thanks for sharing your garden Laura, you give me lots of inspiration.

Red geraniums came from South Africa in the 17th century & can be found in many paintings cheerfully growing on window sills & balconies. So beloved, the Swiss count it as the national flower. A geranium in a clay pot is a classic & goes perfectly with the Victorian sensibility of your Hartley, fun to reflect on generations before you which held the same flower in the same pot in high esteem.

I notice geraniums in pictures from Europe, lots in Italy....on steps, in window boxes, pots (yep, mainly clay pots).
I love them. They do so well in my zone 8, and most everyone puts them in pots. I have a bright pink with a tinge of white to the center. They're not messy to me, as someone stated they could be. I just pop off the spent blooms at the base of the long stem, and remove the few yellowed leaves.
My mother loved her red geraniums...her favorite variety was called "Patriot red". She passed on the love to me.

Hello Garden Answer friends! I am late catching up on videos. Since I don't work from home, when I would watch every a.m. at 7, I am driving now to the office 😢Talking geraniums, I grew up with my Grandmother always having an abundance of geraniums all year inside, outside they were everywhere. As an adult, oddly it was not a plant I never gravitated to, not sure as to why. Fast forward to last 5 years, my sister has bought a fresh flower hanging basket & planter of the red, white & 'blue' (purple) for my parents cemetery plot since my father served in the Army & my mother loved flowers. In the flower arrangement has been the most stunning of red geraniums, they get massive beautiful blooms and replenish seemingly overnight. In my opinion Deadheading geraniums takes no effort & now I know exactly why my Grandmother loved them. I Love the shelf from Benjamin, you have placed in the Hartley as a riser..so sweet to make something for you. No matter their age, then or now, our kids do notice when they have created something for us, we have displayed. I have used glue on so many things..haha. Anyhow, the boxwood trim, really does button them up, but I thought they also looked nice a bit fluffy. Thanks for sharing! Loving all if your landscape & gardens

I have a dark red geranium in a 20 inch pot I've wintered over for 18 yrs, & recently a baby pink and coral geraniums I bring in every Fall. They bloom like crazy all winter long as long as they are under lights, fed every 2 weeks, and dead headed. They sit in my dining room making everyone happy in the dead of winter. So worth it

I grew up in Germany and you see geraniums everywhere in window boxes! Seeing them on your show brings great memories of that time! When you were walking around, the hollyhock was in the back round just saying Hello!

I have always read that hedges should be pruned slightly wider at the bottom than at the top to allow light in near the ground for better branching.
I'm curious about that - I've read that too and do it with my privet hedge. But when you look at European, UK old formal boxwoods they look perfectly straight vertically.
Laura, I have found that when my children were young and made me something, I would find a place somewhere on it to date the item. 20 years from now, you both can look back at it and reminisce.... keeping track of these dates has touched our hearts many times throughout the years.

A stray cat adopted our house over 10 years ago and he was like Douglas, but Wiley would bite, but craved attention. He is an old man now and one of the BEST cats that I have had ❤

Because of you Laura I over wintered a large geranium last fall I dug it out of a planter and cut it way back. I put it under grow lights and it stayed perfect all winter. In early spring I repotted into a larger pot with fresh espoma soil and land and sea compost. After two months outside it has grown to about 30 inches around and has 40 large bloom heads. I have never grown anything this beautiful in my 60 plus years. I also tried growing impatiens from seeds I kept from last years plants and grew about 36 plants all blooming and growing like crazy. Thank you Laura for your knowledge and guidance I finally feel like a Master gardener.❤
That trimming was soooo satisfying!! I personally don’t mind the ‘wooly’ look, but I also LOVE the sharp structured look of them trimmed, night and day difference.

My geraniums and petunias bloom all winter in my greenhouse- it is magical when you look outside the greenhouse and everything is covered in snow.
One of my favorite places to sit, relax and play with plants while watching gardening or cooking channels. However I don’t do a lot of cooking and when I my husband and I were dating I would joke that I only cook twice a month; Now I tell him well I got my 2 meals out of the way for this month anything else is a bonus😊

Every time you shifted the camera to the extended view of your property all I could think of was how magnificent an outdoor wedding would be in that beautiful outdoor room.
I’ve enjoyed your video “tours” but I can’t help thinking how wonderful it would be to actually walk through your garden creation and experience firsthand the fragrance of the flowers and changing colors of foliage of the different seasons.

When I had my first house (1973) I had a couple of Hollyhock plants. My dad came over, looked at them and said "hmmm, my mother used to have Hollyhocks." I responded with something like "0hh, do you like Hollyhocks?" His response...."oh hexx no, I hate them." 😅 At 1631 Benjamin is standing next to you....WOW, has he ever gotten tall!

Lol what a character Douglas is. He is just young and wanting to play with you. If you watch kittens play together that's just what they do. Some cats will play rougher than others though so definitely got to watch for those claws 😀

Laura, tip for Douglas! I have a cat who was a stray, and he did the same thing with my legs. I found that if I made no reaction to his attacks, but carried a distraction in my pocket, I could pet him when he came by my legs, and then when I saw the crazy glint come into his eyes, I would toss the toy or treat and head him off before the attack even started. He doesn't do it anymore! Maybe this would help you out with Douglass, because it's no fun having to be constantly alert for leg attacks!

I planted sprinter boxwood just after you, and had the same experience with spidermites and flopping. I trimmed mine last month in a little more rounded shape to counter the upright tendancy (not as formal as yours) and they are already pushing new growth in the middle. Fingers crossed. It was so helpful to see I was not alone!
