  • Way of the Hunter is constantly being updated, and as a result of these updates, the guides for the game have to be updated as well. Animals having a new inspect mode can have significant impact on the alert and spook mechanics of the game. Let's have a big discussion about it =)

    The animals will look at you from a distance without being in the inspect mode and without being in contact with you, i think it s not related to their alert meter but just for immersion. They will look around off into the abyss at times, then other times look directly at you which i think is more than coincidence. May be related to player movement.

      Yeah, one of the first things to know about the alertness of animals in this game is that they have a meter that builds up from the sound of movement. We can't see the meter, but if you imagine it's there, the spook stuff starts to make more sense. Stop and let the meter go down 👍😃

    I would not say that elk would not inspect you often. I was hunting a 4-star bull yesterday, camping, lying in the grass just about 120 m from their resting zone, and one young female just moved in my direction, inspecting me multiple times when she heard me moving as I was trying to get a sight on the bull behind trees. It took me quite a while to get the shot, and I would say that low-value animals from the herd may act as guards around the leader. I've seen that behavior several times already, especially with elk, but also with moose. If something is off, then a female goes to inspect it. She may even stay between you and the bull, preventing you from moving closer. The young female elk was camping about 50 m from me, while the 4-star bull was 120 m away.

    • @bumblewoot
      @bumblewoot  Před 6 měsíci

      It's possible. I don't think they made it that advanced though. 80-90% of the herd is usually of low value so just by the numbers we would almost always see low value inspects. Just my opinion. I don't think NRG did the programming that advanced.

    • @DJ.4Z-forzion
      @DJ.4Z-forzion Před 6 měsíci +1

      @bumblewoot I think they do not need to do much, just give a higher chance for lower-value animals to inspect, and you have a great impact.
      In theHunter: Call of the Wild, higher-rated animals are more sneaky and sensitive. I would not wonder if they did something similar by making them more resistant to provocation and risky behavior, especially if we consider the herd as a whole.
      There may be hidden mechanics simulating different roles in the herd based on simple algorithms. I am involved a bit in game development, and in our game, we have some simple algorithms which have a huge impact on the game.
      If I were a developer of this game, I would think about this aspect. Maybe it is only a coincidence, but for me, it is mostly a younger female that goes for inspection. And I do not mean a single inspection but systematic repeated inspections.
      And consider that they turn their head towards you. In real life, they do not have to do that only to see you but also to hear better sounds from that direction. It just looks like the inspecting animal is also listening to sounds from that direction to hear them better. That can be simulated by giving animals an amplified hearing cone in the direction they are looking. And if we consider only one has to register you and all can be alerted by that, it would make sense.

      @bumblewoot  Před 6 měsíci

      @@DJ.4Z-forzion yes, I have underestimated the devs before. But not often. It is possible that they have this. The many times the science has proven that the game is more simple than it appears. I don't say 100% on anything until it's confirmed. Tools are not available to accurately confirm if this is the case without running the scenario 100+ times or more

    • @DJ.4Z-forzion
      @DJ.4Z-forzion Před 6 měsíci +1

      @bumblewoot I would say that even the developer may not know the real impacts of some algorithms.
      I can use the game I am helping to develop, Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, which is a very complicated tycoon economy city builder. I am playing the game for thousands of hours, tracking the economy in a spreadsheet, and my findings are often surprising.
      The developer had an idea in the beginning; he created a mathematical formula and wrote an algorithm based on that. He has some expectation of how it may work, but there is no way to test it long term easily. It is a dynamic economy with simple math, constants, and variables. It just adds up over time.
      This game may be similar in aspects they are focusing on and consider them to be signature. Almost anybody can make models of animals for Unreal Engine, but to make them behave requires a lot of thinking. If you are making a game where you want a realistic hunting experience with long-term herd management, you can expect some interesting ideas behind it.
      I just want to emphasize that it adds up over time. They can slowly improve behavioral patterns for animals by adding simple algorithms to the mix, and the more people play the game, the more feedback they get and are able to implement and test more complex ideas.
      Current behavior of animals can possibly be reverse-engineered into dozens of simple mathematical formulas, and the rest is the code to calculate hitboxes, animate movement, and render the image. It does not have to be super complicated to look very realistic.

    • @bumblewoot
      @bumblewoot  Před 6 měsíci

      @@DJ.4Z-forzion I agree. And your last point sums it up. It does not have to be complicated to look realistic. And that is what WotH is. It gives the impression that it is more advanced than it is. It's not a bad thing. It can be a strategy. But that is the root if my original response. I think the inspect system is simple and it just looks complicated imo.

    Question for the expert: Do animals return to need zones during the times like they do in CoTW? In other words, if I spook a herd by walking or shooting, will they return to that need zone that day? I have tried this and waited for a while, but they don't seem to return. Just wanted to get your take on it! Do they just wonder off to their next need zone?

    • @bumblewoot
      @bumblewoot  Před měsícem +1

      They will spook and then regroup on wherever the herd leader ended up after running. Then they will just stay there until some calming timer runs down and then they will head to the need zone that is associated to the time slot that they calmed down in. So if you spooked them right at the start of a time slot then they will likely head back, if not then they will go to the next one. They may also go to the rare zone instead. Most of the time they will head to the next time slot location simply because it takes a long while for them to return to normal and the clock will enter a new need zone time. If this makes sense. This isn't bad idea for me to do a video on to revisit it. Just to see

    Little question: Is hunting pressure determined by how many gun shots you fired or by how many animals you actually killed? If one of these is true, how "much" pressure is needed to flip zones?

    I cant decide if the game factors into the vison detection how much foliage cover you have.
    2 days ago I was bow hunting, on Ranger difficulty, and called in 2 mature mule deer from around 100m away. I was crouched in the edge of some pines, so I had full vegetation behind and around me. I shot the first buck from 27m. He jumped and ran about 35-40m back the way they came and dropped. The second buck was still standing about 50-55m away. He alerted, snort wheezed, but didn't run. I hit the grunt caller again and he came in to 40m and stood looking around (the inspection mode you pointed out?). I shot him at 40 m and he dropped on the spot.
    The point I'm taking too long to get to is... at no time during this did either buck seem as though they saw me. Is foliage a factor or am I seeing something thats not there?
    Edit... I uploaded the video of the hunt to my channel if anyone wants to see the behavior I am talking about.

    • @bumblewoot
      @bumblewoot  Před 6 měsíci

      Their vision is only like 25 meters if you are crouched and still. Wolves are about 50m. Foliage has an effect but I'm not sure to start extent. If you take a bow shot from within a bush there is more of a chance that the other deer will not flee. It doesn't feel like a vision thing, it feels more like the shot is muffled. It's weird

    Great video bumble . Can you confirm or do you know because I thought the new rack system was going to be a continuous growth. I have a bunch of 4 and 5 stars mule and one melanistic who's going to be a 5 star I get an adult one year that has drop times and I thought cool he won't make it to 5 but will look cool. Next year no drop tines. The melanistic at 2 star adult was very symmetrical and had two branches of main beam both sides perfectly even with his G3 branching to a large 3 prong fork making him a 10pt. Grows to mature and now he's a large regular rack 6 point. I wish I would of killed it at adult now. And it appears if you want a non-typical with drop tines kill it when you see it lol. All the other racks I can tell from young to adult which one is which because the racks just grow bigger and get more points but the main indicators stay the same just get larger. Now it seems some just get random new racks and not a progressive growth of a design.

      I think they will tweak this again someday. Right now the game is simulating an animal slowly bleeding out. It used to happen mostly just on artery shots and flesh damage kills. It's just simulating the animals being tired from the wound and bedding down but still alive. If the player approaches too soon then the animal will get a second or third wind until it eventually bleeds out.
