4:50 I wouldnt mind seeing bullets be able to pass through stuff like this, but they shouldn't be unphased by it.
there should be some amount of deflection by branches, and I would rather see them completely stop shots completely than to have no effect whatsoever like in cotw. The hitboxes should be improved but physical objects should have an effect on projectiles.
10:35 I don't think immersion-breaking indicators are needed, if you don't hear a sound irl you just don't hear that sound. there is no problem here.
19:10 I do like the idea of the game being more intuitive in and letting us know the effect we are having in the world around us, but i do not want to see it go the route of cotw and add another hud element, that would simply put a Band-Aid on the real problem. Two things need to happen here, 1: we need sound design that accurately reflects the impact the player has on the world around them, 2: the effect we have on the world around us needs to realistically make sense.
The fact that I can stand in the middle of an open field only 80m away from a deer and it will never see me in an infinite amount of time from that distance, yet can hear me moving at the slowest speed possible very clearly, is just odd. I've hunted for my entire life and while a deer's hearing is good, it is usually the sense I am least concerned with irl. even though deer don't have the sharpest vision they will see you before they hear you 80% of the time, and when they do hear something they don't immediately spook but will attempt to verify what made that noise through either sight or smell.
In contrast to real life, we spend most of our time in woth worrying solely about how much noise we make, while largely ignoring the other senses. sight doesn't even matter if you are more than 70 meters away for most animals and human scent doesn't even spook them! They just move at a leisurely pace until they are outside the scent cone. Hearing the player walking should rarely spook animals by itself, it should instead induce the animals to look in the players direction (maybe expand their range of vision to 150 or 200m when alerted to simulate this, make us lay down or get behind a tree or bush) or to circle around to get downwind of where the sound was made to identify the source of the noise, which if they smell the player should lead to them spooking.
theHunter classic has no sound meter or visibility meter, but no one ever asked for one because we didn't need it. whenever an animal sees you, it is very apparent; their eyes lock onto you and if you move, they will spook. If they are about to spook from scent you will see them sniffing the air.
Way of the Hunter has a feedback problem sure, but the problem isn't that we don't know why animals are spooking, it is obvious that it is from hearing, they simply are hearing us when it doesn't make any sense, and then spooking from the quietest footsteps you can make while 120 meters on the other side of a hill while upwind of you. all of this while their other senses are horrendously underrepresented. Adding a sound meter to the hud doesn't fix the gameplay, and if the gameplay was correct then we wouldn't need the sound meter.
the feedback needs to come from in-game cues from the player and animals, not from an immersion-breaking HUD element telling you what the program is doing in the background.

If bullet energy loss can be tracked while passing through an animal/bones, flesh etc and even tracked when the bullet passes through into a new animal (after passing through the first) showing affected decreased energy... Then how hard could it be to just have the bullet loose energy passing thru foliage/branches/leaves etc. .. maybe a deviation of bullet path etc.
I'm no programmer but couldn't each foliage type have a different density value (leaves and grass like 3 branches like.. 30 or whatever) the greater the density value the bullet hits on the way to target the greater the affect (energy loss, bullet deviation).

Thought I'd watch this after starting your latest Q&A video. Overall some good points & not too ranty. With all the UI stuff i think the key is to make them optional so we can all play the way we want. My biggest gripe by far is the way zones were designed to be static & the same for everyone. I wish they'd move around with hunting pressure (like COTW does) or even randomly over time. However, my preference would be no zones at all & just reasonable sized home ranges for species/herds.

    • @bumblewoot
      @bumblewoot  Před 7 měsíci

Being able to enable/disable the ui is important indeed. Also, there have been many requests in the community to have the zones not be static. At the start it was actually a good community thing as people would share the locations that they discovered. But with the toolbox, everyone just has them all for better or worse 😆 The static need zone system is really core to their game, so I'm not sure if that will ever change. Time will tell =)

Totally agree with every bit of your opinion about the mechanics of the game. E.g. herd management could be made interesting, my idea would be when you manage to spot at least 80-85% of a herd, the herd average fitness would show up on the map next to the animal icon and change according to your hunting. This way you can track all your discovered herds and make the game more fun without using pen and paper, and give the player an accomplishment feeling when you finally shot your 5-star.

Totally agree with everything you said! It wasn't ranty at all. It was fair!. It's always baffled me as to why they keep everything so secretive from the player. Not knowing basic things are features is a little frustrating. Sure it can be fun to test stuff at times, but when it's just basic game mechanics like walking through a bush, it's daft. They really do need to work on that. Knowing things is good in a game. It means you can plan. You can strategize a hunt.
I think ranting about a game isn't a bad thing either. It means you like it enough to find its faults annoying and want them fixed. If I play a game and there's a ton of bugs but I'm not super invested in the game, I'll just uninstall it and that's that. But WOTH is a good game and with those changes it could become a really great one. Lets hope they do something about it!

Yes I agree hunting pressure should be shown on map, multiplayer should’ve not been in the game at launch, we should know how loud we are being, and we should’ve got more equipment at launch, More feedback for herd management should be in the game and what I was thinking is that they should make a custom difficulty to turn certain features like extra feedback for herd management on or off so people can play the game how they want just incase they don’t like the feedback, your video was profoundly important and I hope The developers will use it to improve the game, endlessly creating new maps will not help if the features you talked about will not make it into the game.

Herd Management went from being a secondary addition to the game to being a lot of players main focus. They are the only hunting game that does this and I feel they should go all in on it. I think people want to get attached to their own personal reserves and manage them as they see fit. A Nice management UI layout in the map screen would be great for this. The recent change to hunting pressure has me concerned that they are still holding on tight to the idea that not giving the player information is good for the game. I do not need all of the info, but the game should relay a lot more to the player to help bring the player into their game.

It's great that people like you are sharing your thoughts on the game. Most people who want to create content are too scared to talk, and that shouldn't be the case. I can tell that you are really passionate about it and that you care about the success of the game. Otherwise, why would you bother in the first place?
I have been playing as a ranger since the release of the game and I have never switched back. However, I feel like the game could do a better job of giving feedback to the player. I would like to see a rework of the difficulty setting. For me, the selling point of the game is its realism compared to COTW but I feel like is necessary to be able to tell if an animal is male or female, especially for any non-horned/non-antlered animal. Additionally, a wide range estimate of the animal's weight would be helpful in determining if it is young or adult. While mature elk are easy to identify, it is impossible for other animals. I really hope these features are added because it feels like bad game design to me. Alternatively, they could improve the 3D models to make it easier to tell the difference, but I understand that would be a very difficult task. Adding this minimal information in ranger mode is essential to balance the gameplay aspect of the game while still maintaining its simulator side.
One thing you pointed out, which is a huge issue for me, is the lack of environmental feedback. I need to be able to hear the animals closely and watch their every movement. Not having interactive foliage really hinders this. For immersion and feedback purposes, it should be a must in any realistic hunting game to have deer moving branches and leaves, leaving a trail of particle leaves behind them. Most of the vegetation in the game are fine, but there is one bush also present in Transylvania, that I really hate, when you go inside, there are cube-shaped branches that look very bad. I was hoping they would change them into 2D sprites for two reasons: better performance and easier implementation of interactive foliage. In my opinion, CotW is still the king in terms of ambiance and vegetation. It may have worse graphics overall, but the vegetation is very well done, and WOTH should aim for that level of detail. I would also suggest adding more vegetation density. Perhaps they didn't do it for performance reasons, but if they optimized the vegetation better, they could potentially add more. I think having more variety of vegetation would also help, I feel like the first maps are way too big and I prefer smaller maps with more detail and variety in them than bigger maps mostly looking the same, that is why I am such a fan of Kingdom Come: Deliverance map, a small map but great detail. I think Aurora Shores is a pretty good size map and every map should be that size for now on.
About changing the vegetation, as a 3D artist, I have worked on minor projects for UE4, and I know it works with blueprints. If they change that, all the trees in the environment will also update, they can also fix the collider the same way. For me this is really bad because it means if I shoot an arrow and hits an small leaf after 20 min of calling and crawling is going to be frustating. What I just mentioned should greatly improve feedback and immersion. Another issue you mentioned is the sound. When you go into a bush or a tree, or when an animal moves, there should be corresponding sound effects. The lack of sound breaks immersion and feedback, especially in ranger mode.
Another issue I have with the game is that it is nearly impossible to hunt with bow some animals without callers in ranger mode. The only strategy I have figured out is to wait in their habitat until they come at their usual time. I believe the spook-meter should be better implemented. I don't mind spending 20 minutes trying to get close to an animal, but even when I am crawling very slowly and stoping from time to time they get spooked easily. It's almost impossible to hunt them with a bow unless they come to you. They should tweak this aspect so that bow hunting is challenging but not completely impossible for certain animals.
As for herd management, I don't do much of it. I might call low fitness animals and get rid of them, but I don't have time for it in ranger mode, especially since I am mostly interested in bow hunting. However, I understand that in lower difficulty settings, more player feedback could be given, as it is a main selling point. I appreciate that there is a system working in the background. Regarding hunting pressure, I think having some feedback on the map wouldn't hurt.

I'm a bit late to coment this video because it has a few weeks old, imho the devs should fix how the distance is measured in game, currently is a straight line not having in account elevations or depressions in terrain thus influencing spook radius and how animals detect the hunter in situations where they shouldn't.About sounds...well , we need sound cues when going trough bushes and stuff like that...and that's it! Please dont ask for more arcade features,no need for that. This game is based on our learning ,like irl that takes time. If they fix the 2 things mentioned, the game is almost perfect.

I want coyotes and turkeys but i know they buy their models and recycle their other models (this is suoer noticabke in the new goat which doesnt look like its irl countertyoe cause it was made using the mountain goat model) (if im not mistaken) so it may be a while before either is added
And i want tripods and tree stands
I also want less focus on kust make animals, there are plenty of animals where the female is actually the trophy animal irl (mainly birds, hare, rabbit, hyena, fox, i could list on and on)
The tree fix should have been fixed aswell (coming from someone who works on games) a technical issue is definitly not a excuse for sonthing having a poor hit bix, since if you made the models in house you should have full control over the hitbox of an object, even with storebaught assets if you have modeling experience fixing a hitbox is pretty easy you just gotta re wrap your pbject and make sure planes (the leaves) arent coliders
NOTE: I was mistaken not all if their models are store bought a few are commissions from Anastazia Volarova, her models are immaculate I reccomend checking out her work, she also has done many of the textures and color variations
ANOTHER NOTE: apparently the models were made in studio or commissioned - however in my experience of modeling and buying models I actually think a few of them were bought from the same place ultimate hunting bought theirs - ei GIM studios and VFX grace, I can especially see this with the mule deer, moose, and helmeted geunie fowl, I could be mistaken still but doing a side by side comparison they look very very similar if not the exact same (I'd have to pull them up in a 3d model software to be absolutely sure)

-toothless- loved the discussion and topics, I think we violently agree that the game side of player feedback as u discussed is more detrimental than beneficial to the games success. As u know alot of the crazy stuff I've done, i think most game mechanics and features do work, even though they do likely work in ways that players will not see easily. Make alot of that feedback tied to hunter sense so those wanting that no help the way to easily avoid it, but those that just wanna enjoy a good hunting game, they can too. I do think woth does offer the best hunting experience available right now. I think that was the biggest development focus instead of the ui for players. That may be the reason that portion lacks or lags as much. It is weird a game that goes into scientific measurements that a hunter would likely never know exactly (precise bullet energy and percentage of genetic quality for instance) but can't give you a more efficient way to reliably guage how loud you are versus ambiant noise, or how camouflaged versus the environment one is.
Both are things a hunter would likely get a better sense of if they were actually there, and would adjust accordingly if possible (like masking movement noise by traveling near running water when stalking, or adjusting branches and positioning to break up silhouette when ambushing).

I know I'd have failed miserably lol Some get so offended when negative feedback is given its like you've offended their mother/baby.. Feedback is because we care. I totally agreed with you the full video on everything. There is soooooo much more id add but obviously you didn't want it to be just a vid dunking on the game.
I feel like they have limited much too limited man-hours for all of the things a game like this needs. It's clear when one area is worked on other areas are very much overlooked. I wish I was uber wealthy and could just say heres x number of dollars, hire skilled sound design people, hire more graphics and animations people, more gameplay interface people (implementing the 'Toolbox' into the actual game), get fur and animal variations significantly increased on all predators etc. In short, seems like there must be too few people spread too thin trying to accomplish way more than they are able to keep up with/do.
I wish they could afford to skip one 'new map development' phase and put all those manhours/resources into polishing up the much needed parts of the game in desperate need of attention. They need new maps to keep the money flowing but wow could the game really improve as a whole if dedicated time could just be brought back into getting the things we need. I mentioned animations and gotta come back to it again, injured animals later on in game showing they are injured.
I recently saw a CotW clip of someone making a bad shot on a grizzly bear the the bear was running around on three paws clearly favoring the front.. wow what an impression that made!!

I 100% Agree with you, Bumble. Especially when it comes to long term use of the game. I really like the idea of having ongoing management goals for each reserve, to help continue the storyline gameplay once you've completed the "game." The bulletproof tree branches need to go, too.
I think their philosophy was to build a hunting simulator, not game. That's a big reason why I belive they've left so many environmental feedback details out of the game. I think it's a flawed perspective, if accurate, as they built a game into it. It is a game with a storyline & everything. This is not a simulator, where you get in the game & just go as you would IRL. But since they've tried to make it both, there's a disconnect in how it comes across to us. We don't know what to make of it. If it's a game, we need more environmental input fed back to us. If it's a simulator, we need more obvious cues we can pick up on that help us understand the environment & situation we're hunting in, in that moment of in-game time. Right now it feels like it's somewhere in between, lacking an identity.

You got it! Yes that is one of my main points. Trying to be a sim and a video game at the same time I don't think works. They are clearly leaning towards video game, so they need to get the game side of things functioning well. There is also a lot of exciting things they can do with video game features.

I agree with the hit box on trees, So annoying. Also agree with the noise level you make. I can drive up to 140 meters sometimes less but I try to sneak up with wind in my face and they spook at 140 and I wonder what just happened. They do a great job at some realism and then are just ridiculously unrealistic with others. Also agree with the map edit. At least give us a gps in one of those bino spots. I saw a 4 star warthog one day, marked the spot with a marker only to accidentally remove it then not remember at all where it was. If I had a gps I could mark my spot name it 4 warthog and always go back to that gps point. The hunting pressure I never look at, don't care if a rarely or often because they don't always go to it anyway. I just hunt a herd and visit spot for the time of day they are supposed to be there. Great video bumble, everyone needs to rant once in a while or changes never happen. But the tree thing bugs me so much.

First time watching a video from you, quite chill !
i recently got into hunting games (COTW), and i was very frustrated with the amount of HUD elements like tracks particles or simply visual icons on the screen to help you navigate and 100% find every animal. Im defenetly someone who love the "hardcore" playstyle. its cool to have the options at least. So naturaly i heard about Way of the hunter being more realistic than COTW, But honestly after watching alot of videos, theres some details about this game that really dont seem fun to me even though it does seems to have the best hardcore experience on "Ranger mode". Why does all animals are always in a herd ? it really feels like the devs lost them selves only thinking about coding groups of animals behavior that they forgot in nature you will see alot of single animals here and there.... literally every video i watch its someone looking through binoculars a group of animals. Also ive heard someone saying when you find the feed zone or need zone of one herd, they just basically stay in that area forever and its just way too easy to come back and kill them you dont search... Seems like this game dont have alot of "random feel" to it. Looks so A-B-C.
That being said, in COTW i can play with all animal clues turned off ,no HUD... and its quite amazing. anyway i liked watching your video !!

Welcome to the channel! I think CotW is best played with minimal HUD as well =) As for solo animals, they do exist in the game. They were added several months in after the game released; however, they still act the same as a herd would. Meaning they have their own map icon, and their own specific 6 need zones that they will always visit. The solo Elk just outside of the Bear Den Ranch often becomes the player's friend because he's always around 😄

Some of this video I agree with you and some I don't...
    1. Tree hit boxes. You dont shoot through trees irl. Maybe you haven't done a lot of real world hunting. A limb the diameter of your pinky will deflect a bullets trajectory more than you think. Are the hit boxes too big? Yes, but you seem to be irritated you cant shoot through a limb. And I doubt its holding up tree stands, thats probably money and time.
    2. Sound indicators. So you want the game to be more arcade like and easier. COTW is very arcade if thats what you're looking for, but I would guess the devs were trying to go the less arcade route for this game.
    3. Equipment slot. It takes time and money to remove things too. You cant just delete the box, you have to redo that portion of the ui. That requires hours of work for a well paid programmer. Maybe they had planned something for that box, but since priorities change, they haven't touched it yet. Now you want it removed, but if they are still planning on using it down the road its a waste of resources to remove it. You're picking nits here.
    4. I dont do MP so I have no opinion on it functionality, but as for coms, since most people use discord anyway, even when a game has built in coms, its a waste of resources that could be better used elsewhere. Again, you have a limited supply of time and money, and choices have to be made. You don't implement a feature for 15% of your users. It doesn't make good business sense.
    5. Sound indicators. I agree there sound be a corresponding sound for every action and terrain type you interact with, but I don't want a sound meter. Again, thats what COTW is for.
    6. Yes the map is very lacking in what we can and can't do, and I would LOVE to see more functionality, but you're comparing coding a webpage with a game. Not the same thing. One is far easier, and far less expensive.
    7. Hunting pressure. Again you compare other games to this one because they have something you want and this one doesn't. I have never understood this argument. IF COTW has the features you want, why aren't you playing it instead? I assume you want to play this game cause its less of an arcade game. You seem to want to take a game that appears to have tried and take a more sim approach rather than the arcade approach of Cabela's or COTW, and turn it into those games. Why? Those games already exist.
Just a guess here, but I don't think you have much understand of coding, or much experience in how to manage a large production on a business budget. Its not like your home budget in that EVERY action costs money, complicated by the fact that there's only so much to go around. You cant do everything.
Now your devoted simps may come after me, I don't care. This isn't personal. I like your content, except this one, and I would think a rational person, which I assume you are from your videos, would welcome a differing opinion.

    • @bumblewoot
      @bumblewoot  Před 7 měsíci

It's all good Muddfoot, I appreciate the well thought out comment. Yes the video is my opinion on these things for sure. There's alot to all of this topic as it basically encompasses the entire game. I understand where you're coming from. I believe they should choose between sim or game. They have been trying to do both. But they have been moving towards being a game far more than moving towards being a sim. I don't believe trying to be both works. So I think they should implement game things. I understand how the business works. My main beef is with their decision makers as imo some of these core decisions hurt the game. The video gives examples of pre launch poor decisions as well as recent ones indicating to me that the problem is still there. But the fact that I see a problem in the first place is an opinion 😀. And opinions can certainly be wrong 👍

      @ReinhardAusDieNiederlande Před 7 měsíci

      1.
You miss the point when discussing tree hitboxes, just like Bumble showed in this video, there are gaps in between the branches but there's a very high likelihood you'll hit the tree hitboxes when firing a shot while clearly there's plenty of space for the bullet to travel through. Fallen trees have also a certain type of branches coming from them with wide areas to visually shoot through but i have countless of times the bullet hits an invisible brick wall. The problem the hitboxes of trees is also the fact a very thin branch can obscure the possibility for information of the animal to be shown when looking through the binoculars.
      2.
The only thing i would like to see changed when it comes to sound bubbles is the fact they are currently very intrusive and obscure your view when looking in the direction where the sound comes from so i would like them to be more transparant and maybe with less body.
      6. The very basic addition i would like to see to the map is to have at least five colours you can opt for the herd icon and maybe the ability to hide herd-icons for a specific animal species so you can only show the ones in primary habitat for example.
I have made some suggestions in the feedback channel of the official Discord channel of Way of the Hunter, you're welcome to chime in.

@@ReinhardAusDieNiederlande No, I didn't miss the point. I addressed what he said. I refer you to 3:00 in the video. "The twigs and branches stop your shot". Again at 4:08 he's talking about shooting through branches. I wasn't addressing your interpretation of the point he was trying to make, I was addressing what he was actually saying.
As for the gaps, I assume you're referring to 4:44 where he shows a perfect example of a shot you shouldn't take in the first place. Why is it so hard to wait for, or create a proper opening? If you're trying to shoot that closely through branches you set yourself up very wrong to begin with. The problem is your approach, not the hit boxes.

@@Muddfoot01 I agree if you're shooting a .223 or .243 or 25-06 etc. a branch the size of your pinky could deflect that. But a 30-06 can punch through a 5 inch diameter pine tree and still kill something behind it. And now you would be modeling every bush and tree for penetration based on bullet which would be not very practical. But again, you have trees that you shoot in an opening even between two trees and the invisible box reaches out and stops your bullet. And every example he showed in this video, every tier 5 rifle would get through except maybe the 6.5.

About The equipment slots, they should add a nigthvison binos, spoters that can spot whit Hunter sence further than 200 Meters, that is One ideia. One thing i really think is missing Here is that The game fonte give you a oportunity to night hunt. They should consider that. As i find This game is One of The better hunt game on The market, as a simulation of hunting. If they sort The wall from tree branches, and The sound, as you point on The video and some ui improvments, this will be the perfect hunting simulation game so far, and will guive some longevity to the game on long term on The market.

Still by far the detail in this game is by far amazing. But detail without proper gameplay with things you mentioned is like trying to glue paper together with string. If this game is like any other game for example skyrim or oblivion. It doesn't matter if the trees are glitched. Its easy to replace the tree model and in turn the game will replace every tree on the map. The distant land will have to be regenerated. But non of this should be a problem. Why complain about cash limits when if done right will double said cash. I miss the days when devs would listen to customers. It sounds like the devs kinda listen. I don't agree with any of this. Call of the wild caters to aspergers and ocd kids and for that reason it's not going to get as wide an audience. The devs on woth clearly have been prioritising realistic stalking and immersion over spreadsheets and gatcha grinding. Woth provides the experience and joy of a successful stalk and kill precisely because of its deliberate lack of feedback like stealth meters etc. The faster you move, the more noise you make. Just like irl you need to learn by doing. I understand where your gripes are coming from but for those of us without autism that's exactly what makes woth better than all it's competitors, the way it disguises game mechanics and how you can feel like the animals are alive. The joy is in the chase far more than the mechanics and the 5 star trophies.

I would agree with you if the devs had built the game to allow environmental noise to be a cover for your noise as you move in-game. For example, the loud sound of rushing water should most definitely mask over any sound you make as you walk along the water. In this game though, an elk can hear you from 300 yards away as you walk next to a waterfall rushing over a 100' cliff. There's clearly a missed mark there, if they were going for the hunting simulator feel. They missed.
