Fun fact: 4chan was originally created specifically to discuss Azumanga Daioh, so in a way, almost all of modern meme and Internet culture exists downstream of this show. It's basically a foundational document of the modern Internet.

I don't think people understand how far back Azumanga Daioh's influence goes on internet meme culture. Even the term waifu was popularized by it. It shaped early 4chan anime and meme culture which in turn shaped modern meme culture. Let's not forget that for a while Yotsuba was the unofficial mascot of 4chan, character of another manga by the same author that's still ongoing (Yotsubato). For some reason the past few years have seen a great resurgence in bizarre post ironic and niche Azumanga memes unrelated to the popular OMAGAH but it seems it festered into everyone I know in 2023 and 2024 watching the anime which resulted in the current explosion of memes on it and America ya (which btw is the most unfunny azumanga meme which explains why it's popular lol).
