It's funny because this is the same portal that was opened in Vilnius, Lithuania connecting to the Polish city of Lublin in 2021 (the artist is Lithuanian). Never had any issues and was generally thought as a cool idea. Opened in Anglosphere countries and closed within days after people started clowning on each other 😂

On one of if not the most packed street in Dublin.
One thing to note, the same exact company has 2 other portals under their belt. One connecting Vilnius to Lublin, and the other connecting 2 island nations to each other. Both of them succeeded greatly with no issues whatsoever, proving the strength of human communication and unity, furthermore proving that the entities living in New York and Dublin are not human.

I’m from dublin, and the place where they put the portal, O Connell Street is one of the worst possible places they could’ve put it due to the amount of drunks and drug users. It’s like putting an ice cream out in the sun and expecting it not to melt

I believe that the fact the portal is getting so much attention right now also contributes to the likelyness of people on either side doing weird things. The more attention they see drawn to the portal, the more likely someone is going to try to do something stupid to be noticed. After a few months, if it still stands, I'm pretty sure the shenanigans will become less and less frequent as the portal will not be the hot new thing anymore.
Unless it's moved or removed, it will be in the centre of the Dublin Pride Parade.

We've had that "portal" in Vilnius since the spring of 2021, and it connects us to Lublin. It was cool to see it for the first time, but now everyone just walks by it and pays 0 attention.
The Villinus side is much emptier than the Lublin side based on experience

The portal reminds me of my first time playing VRchat. I just got an Oculus Rift, I hopped into a world and this desktop user wearing a model of Foghorn Leghorn came up and just said "Fuck you." In my university we are going through the process of designing a good art project. We discussed in detail about what each of our group's ideas might represent or be interpreted as.
Then I hear about this art piece, a $4 mil tax payer funded "art" project where they skipped the pandemic and found out about video chatting and made a giant "portal" between two cities to "connect them".
I asked about this to our lecturer, and he also couldn't fathom what thought had gone in thinking this was a good way to spend money, or that it wouldn't immediately be abused by the public.

Besides all the memes... I absolutely love these portals. It's a great use of technology we have available today and I wish more cities around the world had one connected to some other random place.
