  • Produced in 2003 for the former Murray-Darling Basin Commission (MDBC).
Lake Victoria in south-western Australia is a special cultural place and a key national water resource.
It is an important cultural heritage site for Aboriginal communities and in indispensable environmental resource for the health of the River Murray, its plants animals and ecosystems.
The story of Lake Victoria crystalises many of the driving issues in Australia's national development. At a time when problems of environmental degradation and salinity are as significant as water scarcity, the story revealed by archaeology encourages a long-term view of land and water management. Lake Victoria teaches one central lesson: shared responsibility is the key to future sustainability.
