- In this video we look at an effective solution to a common issue with the 370z steering lock failing which causes the car to be unable to start up. The problem is fixed by removing a fuse from the fuse box and outlines the process and more importantly the location of the fuse box which is very difficult to find. The rest of the fix involves simply locating the steering lock box and hitting with a hammer while the key fob is in range and the car power is on. If unable to turn the power on keep pressing the power button while hitting the steering lock box.
Update: This repair has been successful with no issue for over 6 months now. - Věda a technologie
I had this exact problem with a 2009 370 Z. I am not mechanically inclined, but your video and verbal instructions were very clear and easy to follow. My issue has been successfully resolved, and I wanted to say thank you.
Glad to hear it worked out for you
Thanks a lot, Very Helpful. My steering lock was broken in the unlock position. I took a hammer and tapped it aggressively, maybe five times, then ignition lights came on. Then, with the ignition on ACC, I removed the steering lock fuse. All good !!! Took about 20 minutes.
Awesome!
For a sudden while i was working on a firends 370z this issue happened, and your method worked with just few taps on the fuse box beside the battery, thanks brother
Did you remove the fuse?
Amazing video. Thank you so much for the step-by-step.
You're welcome
Thank you so much for such a detailed video brother!!! This truly helped.
Awesome glad to hear!
had the same problem...try this procedure out, it work thanks you very very much 👍 thank you
Awesome!
Absolute lifesaver!! Car died in a work carpark….couple of taps with a rubber hammer and we’re good to go! Thank you!
Awesome!
Don't forget to take out the fuse so it doesn't happen again
Thanks for clarifying to unlock the steering lock before removing the fuse. I followed another video and just pulled the fuse. It didn’t work. I will unlock before pulling the fuse this time.
simple and perfect video. 🔥
Thank you
thank you
My man! Thank you! Blessings brothaa!
😁👍
Had the same issue and your resolution worked! Thanks for the simple instructions ☺️
Awesome!
Dude thank you so much
You're welcome!
So i pulled it out, while the care was on. Does it need to be on acc mode to pull the fuse? After the first replacement a few years ago. my key light just came back on. I guess i forgot to pull the fuse that first time.
The car should be in the on position (not running) while you tap the box so the steering lock pin moves down into the box before you pull the fuse. If after you pull the fuse the car starts then you were successful.
If the key light is still on you may need a new battery in your fob, or last resort you may need a new battery in the car. The key antenna on the car seems to need a good strong battery to get a good signal (in my experience).
Thank you for such a detail video! This video saved me while waiting for the tow truck and was able to cancel it before arriving and being charge $250 for the tow 😅
I do have some questions regarding the fuse pull. Do I have to replace the fuse?
Or do I just pull the fuse and never replace it so this terrible experience never happens again?
If you're not having issues never put it back. If you're worried about having a anti-theft steering lock there may be an updated version available but I don't think it's necessary.
@@nothandsomebuthandysorry I believe wasn’t clear with my question. All I did was hit the box until the car was unlocked and was able to turn on. I’ve yet to pull the fuse and the car has not left me stranded again.. Yet.
For a complete fix to the problem and so this does not happen again (where the car doesn’t get out of lock and leave me stranded) should I just pull the fuse?
Or should get the steering wheel lock box and fuse replaced?
Like if I pull the fuse, is there a chance where the car will leave me stranded and I would have to bet on hammering the steering wheel lock box once again? Or this issue would be fixed with the fuse pull?
Turn the car on (not running) and pull the fuse, leave it out (but maybe keep it as a spare). You should not be stranded for the lock again unless it isn't completely retracted.
If by chance it does happen again put the fuse back, hit the box, then pull the fuse again. I have not had issues since I pulled mine.
Broooo your a hero ❤ thanks for the hint with hammer. Will now a hammer in my 370Z 😂 greetings from switzerland 💪
Once you pull the fuse you no longer need the hammer
Oh okay thanks for the tipp 💪
With the car on would it not be simpler just to unplug the steering lock at the cable underneath the steering wheel?
This may work as well but I'm not sure. Pulling the fuse cuts the power to the relay before the module. I haven't looked at the wiring diagram to see if that relay feeds anything else. If you try it, let me know!
This worked for me for awhile but now its back to doing it again. Banging on the lock module worked at first. I think I need to replace the lock module. Anyone know if it can just be swapped with a used one from a junk yard or is this a dealer program type of item only the dealer or a locksmith can program it? I took mine apart but it has 4 microswitches and I still cannot get it to start. Dash lights up but thats it.
Did you remove the fuse after the car turned on after hitting the module?
I can't find your other comment but I wanted to add that that if you pulled the fuse, and the car is going to the "ON" position if you hit start without pressing the brake, and you have a good strong battery, then I think there is a possibility the starter is sticking and should be replaced.
As a side note I did notice the comment about the microswitches in your disassembled module and if you don't want to replace it just hardwire each of the switches closed. Looking at the wiring diagram if the steering lock fuse is removed they should have no ill effect on the car.
@@nothandsomebuthandy This is that module because banging on that module fixed it temporarily plus I just changed the starter 20k miles ago with a new Hitachi OEM one. Also the battery is brand new, just got a new battery just to make sure and the 5 fusable links on the battery terminal are good. I buy only name brand or OEM parts for that car. The car has 200k miles so far and its become a massive parts hawg after 180k miles but I am a good mechanic.
Well it sounds like you've replaced the right parts so you're probably on the right track with the module. A few things I would also check is the two starter relays and if the car is manual the clutch safety switch to make sure everything is make good strong contact. And as a last resort if you have a spare key give that a try with a new battery as well. Sometimes the transponder can get you as far as the ON position but not start.
Good luck and let us know once you find the problem!
the key light showed up one morning on my 2014 nismo, so I googled and found this fix, went to the fuse box, the steering lock fuse slot was empty, I figured the previous owner might have already removed it. So, I've try replacing key fob battery, and inserting the key to key slot, light still on. Car starts up fine tho, it's just distracting that key light is constantly on.
If the key light is on I suspect you have a weak signal from the key to the antenna. Start by changing the battery in the key fob with a good quality CR2032. If that doesn't work, I suggest a new battery in the car, in my car I had a similar issue with a decent battery but it went away with a new one. Last resort you may need a new key antenna as I've read they can go bad. But try those steps in that order.
This should work on manual models too right? Mine just did this at work and I’m running back up there with some tools atm
Yes it should
@@nothandsomebuthandy Ty!
@@nothandsomebuthandy one other question I just noticed my wheel isn’t locked tho so does that mean it could be something else? I have my key in the hole for the fob too btw
No the wheel doesn't have to be locked
@@nothandsomebuthandy okay thanks again!
Hammering wouldn't work for me. Is there any other solution?
Did you have someone else repeatedly press the start button while you hammered? Also wiggle the steering wheel a little at the same time to be sure the pin isn't stuck.
Should the key be in the ignition when tapping on the module
You could put your key in the slot yes, and have someone else press the start button while you tap
@nothandsomebuthandy thanks, we got it working just now. My brother saw on another video that you had to stick a pin and ground some fuse I believe thats under there as well. Not sure what fuse but he got it working. Once the car was on we took the fuse out and it starts now. When we took the steering lock fuse out while the car was off. It wouldn't start anymore. Had to take it out while car was running. Now it starts up everytime. Fuse out and everything reassembled. This video was great. Thanks
@younggun3948 awesome, hope that is the end of your troubles!
My car won’t turn on at all. No lights. Nothing. But everything I’ve been watching makes it seem this is my problem. Jumped it, got lights on and still wouldn’t work. Gonna try this tmr morning when it’s light out. Really hoping this works
Check your battery connections too, and make sure the battery is fully charged. I find my car doesn't like a weak battery, especially if parked for a while. I think the sensors leave a pretty constant draw.
Can i just pull the fuse before the issue happens? What do you think?
Definitely!
@@nothandsomebuthandy thanks for your reply and god bless you and your family
Is it ok to use a metal hammer i dont have a rubber one or should i go buy a rubber one? And do i have to tap it at the same time while hitting it?
A metal one is fine but just tap lightly to begin with. You're looking to vibrate the locking pin loose so the solenoid can pull it back. It's best to have a second person who can wiggle the steering wheel a little and press the start button while you tap on the box.
Once the car goes to the on position you can stop tapping and pull the fuse.
Don't forget to have the key fob in the car with a good battery. Maybe put it in the fob slot to be safe.
@@nothandsomebuthandythx! Your a lifesaver! The red key light still flashing is that normal? I pulled out the fuse.
@Abundance4LL if it is the red key light and not the yellow one you may need a new battery in the fob, try putting it in the fob slot and try a new good quality CR2032 battery to see if it goes away
@@nothandsomebuthandyit only flashes when car is off im assuming that is normal.
@Abundance4LL oh yes that is the anti theft, definitely normal
I just done it and it worked tapped it a few times with a hammer and it crank right up. 💪🏾
Don't forget to pull the fuse out with the start button in the On position!
Should check your vin with the recall list to see if the recall was done by Nissan for the steering lock issue.
It does not show whether the recall was done but there are no outstanding recalls on my car.
Mine has just packed up at my place of work, tried tapping the alluminium box under the steering wheel but it still didn't start. Couldn't even get it to "ACC" mode, completely dead. Had the yellow "No Key" light on dash. Had to get the car recovered to Nissan dealer. Nightmare.
Hope they get it sorted out for you. If the issue comes back go through the comments for some extra tips on getting it to work.
Infiniti FX35 2010 Intelligent Key Light On Ignition Button Stuck On (Have To Disconnect Battery To Turn Off) Somebody Help ??
Look up Infiniti service bulletin ITB12-024 , it is for 2011-2012 FX35 but also 2010-2012 G37 so I wouldn't be surprised if some 2010 FX35 weren't affected. This may point you in the right direction.

Same issue and my wheel also doesn’t lock. I’ve beat the shit out of the box and couldn’t get it to turn on. I ran a wire from the pink wire going into the box and the other end to a ground spot and got the car to turn on. Removed the fuse and then turned off the car but it wouldn’t turn back on. Can’t get the pink wire tap to work again.
Try putting the fuse back in and have a friend tap the start button while you tap the box. It needs the right kind of tap, you're trying to get the lock pin to move into place but not break the box. Might help to have the friend wiggle the steering a little. Make sure the brake is not pressed. Also put your key fob in the fob port as extra insurance.
@@nothandsomebuthandy if my steering wheel isn’t locked but won’t go into acc, should I be hitting the box? I could’ve sworn the box is to get the locking pin to disengage
Hitting the box is to release the locking pin from the steering but also move it far enough to signal the ECU that it is fully retracted. It might be caught in the middle somewhat and the ecu thinks the steering is still locked.

I have this similar issue, it happened to me yesterday but my car doesnt wanna go to acc. It just stays in lock mode. So i cant take out the fuse if the car just stays in acc
Did you hit the box under the steering wheel with a hammer?
@@nothandsomebuthandy didnt have a hammer with me unfortunately. I did try hitting it with some force from my foot since i had boots on but still have yet to get it working. I did some research, and people often say it might just be the key fob so im waiting to get my spare one from my relative. Hopefully that works otherwise im gonna have to have it towed to the dealership since still under warranty.
You should find a hammer or something metal, it needs more of a sharp quick vibration hit to allow the lock pin to move back out of the steering column so your boot will not do. You need to slide under your dash a little upside down to make sure you're hitting the correct box.
As far as the key fob, do this repair first because of it hasn't malfunctioned yet it will another day and leave you stranded. To be safe insert the fob into the port on the dash so you get the best signal. Also if you have a battery charger connect it so you have max power to the antenna. I haven't had this car long but like you have done a ton of research on its little gremlins.
@@nothandsomebuthandy yeah just tried hitting it with a hammer and got no response
This doesn't work if the lock unit has completely failed. Ran a permanent ground to the pink wire off of lock unit
Were you able to release the lock this way? Did you still remove the fuse?
i’m not sure if this is the same problem i’m having but basically it’s a hit or miss sometimes my car will unlock with the key fob sometimes i have to manually open the door with the key then i get in and sometimes it start with just push to start and sometimes i sit there for minutes putting it in the little fob under the steering wheel and pressing unlock until it finally decides to turn on is this what the problem is or does my problem sound different? btw this has been going on for months now
i’ve changed the battery in the key multiple times still does it
Just to be clear, when you say the car finally turns on do you mean the start button lights up to the ACC or ON position or that the engine starts up?
When you unlock with the key fob are you pressing the unlock button on the fob or pressing the button on the door handle?
@@nothandsomebuthandy the car engine starts up, and im pressing the unlock on key fob
How old is the main battery in the car? The key fob signal antenna in the car seems to be really sensitive to less-than-perfect voltage and I've seen that even if the battery starts well the key is not detected properly. I've also read about people changing the antenna but a new battery is inexpensive and easy to change.
So my 370z did this to me too a few days ago and had to get it towed home bc it wouldn’t turn on at all so I seen this video and thought why not i try it out and boom it works goes out of lock mode and then I didn’t start her up I went and pulled out the fuse for the steering wheel lock and then I put everything back and turned her on then off again and on just to make sure and it was good but when I took a drove to my grandmas house I told her I fixed the problem myself and when I was done hanging out I go into the Z and boom back into lock mode
You might have to put the fuse back in and try again, only take the fuse out when you're sure the lock is retracted
@@nothandsomebuthandyman so I guess when I hit it and got it to work and then I pulled the fused I pulled out the wrong fuse so now that I’m looking do I just pull the right fuse now even tho it’s still in lock mode or what to recommend I do?
I recommend hitting on the box again and getting it to move to the on position, then pulling the fuse
@@nothandsomebuthandy so i hit it with the hammer planty for w few minutes it doesn’t want to get out of the lock mode any other suggestions i can do?
When you say "still in lock mode" do you mean the start button isn't working or the key light is on the dash?
Saved me $600 thank you🫶🏻
Awesome!
