The reason Ted the Caver resonates so well is that it plays out so realistically. There are no murderous teenagers with burnt skin, no killer statues, no creepy eldritch monsters that only move when not seen and *NO* creepy video game characters who turned evil for the lulz. It also plays on the fears of claustrophobia and being trapped in an inhospitable place. Every fear is amplified to the highest degree and that's when your mind plays tricks on you.
No.

Creepypastas are an enigma to me, some give the "This was written by someone with talent." And a majority give the "This was written by a toddler who ate half a thesaurus and then mainlined some Mtn Dew."
@@am-ranth8955 To be honest, it just makes me hope that those crappy, not-so-scary stories help the author improve to make better ones in the future! ^^
obama bike is my favorite creepypasta.
The best ones are where everything is pretty normal with sprinkles of weirdness but they are few and far between.
I mean it's just scary stories written on the internet.
It could be from someone who has the skill to be an author but just does it for fun. You can also have some edgy 13 year old who is going through a phase and thinks he's the next Stephen king.
The worst were the "lost/found episodes" or "bootleg games". They were all generally the same, it was always "It started out like a normal episodes and then everyone's faces started becoming more twisted and evil looking. The main character looked sad" - shit like that.
The amount of stories that end badly because someone didn't pay attention to a dog's reaction is wild to me lol
Animals are goats no pun intended
@@we1418badum tss 🥁
The scariest thing in that whole document is where he describes a foul smell and air rushing. In a closed system like a cave, it's reasonable to assume that a sudden increase in air flow would be caused by something moving and displacing air. Towards you. *Which reeks of death*. Sometimes it's the monster that you don't see which is the scariest.
For a little bit, I was into watching and reading about peoples' experiences with "draining", basically exploring man-made drain tunnels and the like. Very fascinating!
I learned that feeling a warm rush of air is just as you said, a lot of it being displaced. Usually this means that a sudden flash flood on the surface (which you cannot otherwise detect from underground) has caused tons of water to start flooding into the drainage system you're currently occupying, and if you don't get to higher ground IMMEDIATELY, you're likely as good as dead.
...Scary as any monster I could imagine...
Ted the Caver is the first ever creepypasta to date. You can't tell whether if this is a hoax or real, but the vagueness and implications is what makes creepypastas more scary, not just all hyperrealistic blood BS or something. That's the power of "show, not tell".
The angelfire page is very authentic. If the person who wrote it wasn't genuinely interested in caving then I'd be fooled.
And then Ted looked at the camera with hyper realistic eyes and hyper realistic tears coming from his eyes, and said: "It's cavin' time"
Cringe af 🤓
Yea, I actually like horrors that disturb you so much instead of like “boo! I scare you!” Like sure, jumpscare surprises me but it’s just way too cheap and it’s completely unnecessary.
Holy cheese, you’re right. I thought it was San Andreas creepypasta to be the first
Muta, I need you to know that Ted The Caver is the exact reason I know who you are. 5 or 6 years ago I was exploring CZcams and came across something I never heard of... Creepypasta. And you're old Ted The Caver videos were my introduction into the world of Creepypasta and SCPs. Thanks man!

I used to watch haunted gaming back in the day too lol.
I'm surprised he didn't mention how the pedro mummy's injuries were the same as Ted's in the story. Damaged spine, broken shoulder, head injury
This is one of my favorite creepypastas for sure. the cave itself is also based on a cave in southern utah that the author and his friend went to alot. (im sure thats covered in this video but i havent gotten that far into it yet haha)

@@derekcox543 thank you so much!
@@Hoffmanjay thank you! im really happy to hear that :)
I hadn't heard of Ted the Caver before, but after reading it I can see why it's persisted. The reason it's so realistic is it's actually based on the author's experience. All the photos are of a real cave and although the hieroglyphics, eldritch nightmares and round crystal are made up, they really did hear a scream down there. A friend of the author explains that a particularly heavy vehicle on the surface could be responsible, but they don't know for sure.
Could’ve also been a mountain lion or fox in heat. They scream like grown humans, it’s mortifying especially at night.
@@Meowzipan I was working in a park a couple years ago. Got to an area I had to lock up at about midnight. I was solo that night. I hopped out of my truck to go lock up the building, and while walking to the door I heard what sounded like a woman screaming from the wood line. I booked it back to the truck and texted the person opening telling them that I didn’t get around to locking up that building. I’m pretty sure it was an animal, but we weren’t allowed to be armed, so I didn’t take any chances.
@@Schnipah YIKES! If by chance somebody was shrieking from the woodlands for some reason to loot the building....THEY FREAKING EARNED IT. Glad you skedaddled!
@@ArcangelZero7 They could have the single ply toilet paper, I wasn’t risking it lmao
The thought of caving is terrifying to me. Sure it looks like a good adrenaline rush, but I could never do it. Such admiration for those that do, and are willing to take on such a challenge.
The only challenge is convincing yourself it's a good idea
There's a difference between caving casually and trying to enter a hole that you can barely fit in, only people who should be doing this are professionals
Idk if I'd say admiration lol
As someone with claustrophobia and severe arachnophobia, I'd be more worried about the cave spiders then the caves themselves
If you ever get the urge to go caving, just remember Nutty Putty Cave

Absolute menace
LMAO fair
Dude has some good writing skills. That was a somewhat cool story and a kickstarter for other cool stories. It was obvious that it was exaggerated and spiced up but their adventure in the cave still seemed like a cool story despite that.
This in a small way reminds me of a guy name Jones that died in Utah cave exploring with his family on Thanksgiving. They never got him out of the cave and it’s his tomb to this day. They cemented the cave off after his death. It’s an insane and sad stroy
I think I recall this. Big sad for sure, especially that they couldnt get him out even after he perished.
Ah yes, Nutty Putty Cave.
thats what I was thinking about too
Mossdale caverns incident was similar as well
@Kavetion
Cap and cope.
Since the cave was isolated from the outside, apart from s small passage, it could be a build up of some gas that caused those feelings. CO2 in particular could bring feelings of dread, cold sweat and shortness of breath. The stench of rotten meat makes me think about sulfur and that could mean anaerobic bacteria that uses sulfur as a catalyst in their "respiration". The screaming could mean a mountain lion lives in the cave, which could explain the dog cowering, the stench and the feeling of dread, but it would mean the cave is connected to the outside in some way. The paintings could be whatever, either something they made up from regular scratchings or some ancient cave paintings, which should be notified about to the authorities because it's an important archeological find.
I do like seeing a more rational explanation of the events of the story. Then again I suppose part of the fun of reading it is that you won't know for sure if something supernatural happened
@@catkillsagain105 i mean, apparently it was all fabrication, a creepypasta. The cave and the passage exist, but everything else was made up. Cool story anyway
@@Eisenwulf666 Yeah, I mean I think the rational parts of our brains know that but the story is so well written and almost believable enough to make you think otherwise. Definitely enjoyed seeing Muta get to the bottom of this classic story
@@catkillsagain105 agreed, i love all of Muta's videos, but a good old creepypasta just gives me strength
Wow how did you manage to rationally explain something that is made up
im a long time caver, they just went into a low oxygen tunnel. Low oxygen levels tend to increase breathe rate, increased heart rate, exhaustion, highend senses, lose of time and hallucinations. The terrible smell is likely just wet sulfur or a dead animal in the water.
it's a fake story
@@hurricane3518 Yes, but its a very believable story.
What an odd comment. It’s a fictional story.
"uhh its a fake story, you cant add explanations to the fake story to make it more realistic!!!"🤓
@@randomannoyance 😂😂😂😂
Ted the Caver is still my favorite creepypasta to date. It aged pretty well considering the date it was written. The fact that you cant really tell if its fiction or not on first reading is so crazy to me and awesome. This is one of the VERY few creepypastas that actually had me on edge for the entire story. For a stpry made in 2001, id give it a 9/10
So if it was written yesterday it would be what lol you think story telling got better in 20years or something? Weird
@jaydub2546 what? I'm just saying it aged incredibly well for being written in 2001. A lot of old stories age poorly. It's a compliment mate. I'm not trying to downplay its quality
The fact they brought a dog in a cave made me extremely anxious even though I know it's not about the dog it reminded me of a recent story my mom told me about a dog who got lost in a cave and ended up just sitting there until a crew found her and she kinda gave up going anywhere because even though dogs have better vision than humans, cave darkness is still too dark to really find your way out.
(I used to go caving with my grandmother and this also makes me worry about her because she still decides to go caving and she likes to trespass and look for cool finds especially since she has a way of passing places that most cant because she works for wilderness type jobs)
This is one of those stories i just can't sit through, getting stuck in a cave makes me very jittery to even listen to. Still gave a like tho! Keep it up
Same. I had a full on panic attack the first time i listened to it, on that channel called Horror Stories. This is extra rough because i love when muta does deep dives. No pun intended.
Forbid you ever learn about John Jones and the Nutty Putty cave. Several channels including Qxir covered that story, it's the stuff of nightmares.

You should watch The Descent
It's a terrible death, I don't know which is worse; being left at Sea or being stuck in a stone coffin
If anyone is interested in listening to this being narrated The Dark Somnium has an amazing narration of this story that honestly gave me chills the first time I listened to it
Dark Somnium is PEAK horror channel
that's the peak of horror narration. That's where I started and I haven't found anything as good. It's almost depressing because I'll never forget how I felt riveted to every word.
I've listened to a ton of narrations of this story since this is my favorite horror story (alongside Anasis Goatman Story). Dark Somnium's narration is still the best one I've come across.
Thanks for the rec! I read Ted the Caver like 20 years ago or something and I've never forgotten it despite never wanting to read it again. I was in like middle school.
A good narration would be cool though.
Dark Somnium's narrations, audio design and atmosphere are absolutely unmatched. Definitely a great recommendation
The Dogs behaviour, the sudden bad feelings, the "mystery sickness", the breezes, the smell... Sounds like a classic case of "stale air" to me - noxious gases are a very real danger in caving
The most terrifying part of these videos sometimes is just muta hitting the mic when I'm watching this late at night and not being able to immediately realize it came from the video.
😂
When Mutahar said "creepy gaming" it sent me into a gigantic flashback to early youtube during my whole creepypasta/urban legend phase that, honestly speaking, never grew out of and still adore to this day.

Anytime I think about Ted, I can’t help but also think about Kenny Veach, also known as SnakeBitMcGee. His disappearance, whether he did it to himself or not, is a mystery I’ve thought about since he went missing.

I do lean towards acts of men involved in his disappearance but I wonder too, what I would do if I found M cave one day...

@@Teff360 I lean more towards the idea that he committed suicide. Considering what his partner has said about him, I could see him having found the cave, but realizing it wasn't as impressive as he originally thought. Since there was alot of pressure on him from skeptics and with his depression influencing him, he might have decided to just end it there.

It's been probably over a decade since I first found Ted the Caver, and to this day it's still one of the most genuinely frightening creepypastas I've ever read (and I read a LOT as a teen). There's just a certain authentic stank about the pictures and detailed descriptions that make it hit differently. Thought it was real when I was younger too!
“authentic stank” is the perfect descriptor for this story lol
Nice that screech sound. There is another story I heard once about a miner hearing that in a shaft as he was eating his lunch alone.
I had a recurring nightmare as a child where this would happen to me in the attic, every night, and it went away when I moved house. Terrifying, I can still hear it in my memory. You feel it in your whole body
Someone has already said it but I need to help get this man out there as DarkSomnium is criminally underrated. If you want to listen to this story then listen to DarkSomniums narration, his narrations are top notch quality. He adds haunting music, quality sound effects, and some really convincing voice acting. I cannot listen to any other creepypasta narrator because they all fail to immerse me in the story like DarkSomnium can. Please listen to his narrations
Yeah i agree DarkSomnium is really cool. My favourite video is the secret British oil rig in the north sea story. I really liked it.

@@f-22raptorlandingzone30 lmao the marketable elsagate monster is good
If early internet creepypastas where written in modern days: at first you have an original fairly spooky atmospheric pasta, BUT THEN THERE IS MORE CONTENT WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTERS IN THE SAME LOCATION AND THERE IS ALSO A SCARY SPOOPY MONSTER THAT WANT'S TO KILL YOU, BUT THEN WE ADD LAYERS, MAKE THE LOCATION EVEN BIGGER, ADD EVEN MORE 2SPOOKY4ME MONSTERS YOU NEED TO RUN AWAY FROM, EVEN MORE LORE TO THEORIZE ABOUT, AND THEN WE MAKE INDIE HORROR GAMES ABOUT RUNNING AWAY FROM A SCARY MONSTER AND AN ANALOG HORROR SERIES BASED ON THE "LORE" THAT WILL BECOME THE NEXT "SCARIEST GUT-WRENCHING BALL-TWISTING CZcams HORROR EVAR!!!". GOTTA ADD MORE AND MORE DUMB SHIT AND THEORY LORE SO THE ORIGINAL STORY IS NOW COMPLETELY UNRECOGNIZABLE.
i rlly appreciate how you actually accept sponsors from companies related to things you talk abt on your channel i find it rlly great
no it sucks and CZcams should just pay producers fairly
@@myfaveyoutube i mean it would be nice to not have sponsors but i mean that in the case that theres a sponsor in the video
CZcams should pay their creators fairly, but independent sponsors allow creators more freedom. Being treated more like an exclusive employee and not using independent sponsors would mean towing the line and cowing to CZcams’s rules to maintain “ad friendliness”. As it is creators have to stick to a lot of rules to be on the platform to begin with, but at least they’re not dependent on revenue exclusively from CZcams advertising (and that’s how YT itself makes its money). Other sponsors can negotiate with creators with a view to the content they create (and any moral questions about it) in mind going in to it, they’re not making their decisions solely with algorithms and machine learning. It allows advertisers to target their desired demographic far more precisely and because it’s an option avaliable to creators of almost any size, even smaller companies with less to spend have a chance to start getting their name out there, it’s a far more egalitarian approach to advertising than some big juggernaut like CZcams.
It is complicated advertising stuff from the field you occupy though, because a lot more people are going to trust you implicitly. You’d better be extra sure that product is something you support before you take a penny.
Mutuhar, this is tangentially related but scary interesting covers some real caving/diving disasters. They’re very well done!
God I love Ted the Caver. It almost captured this eldritch horror feeling with how you can't actually tell what the cave is, or what he's experiencing. Whether it's even real or some sort of madness.
I’m going to scare you more: there is NO echo in caves. Nothing. You can scream as much as you want but the deeper you go the quieter it gets. All you’ll end up doing is suffocating and tiring yourself out there is absolutely nothing you can do to call for help if you’re lost
