- I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK REASONABLE....FOR GOOD REASON. I AM GOING TO TRY AND MAKE THIS A BUDGET BUILD. I WANT TO USE SOME OF THE THINGS I HAVE LAYING AROUND TO PUT THIS TRUCK TOGETHER AND MAKE IT USEFUL.
HERE IS THE LINK TO THE BEVERAGE TRUCK VIDEO:
• REMOVING THE BEVERAGE ...
Your wife does a heck of a job. Everyone could use a helper like her.
😊😊😊😊😊😊
I am a retired truck driver 55 years over road I love watching you build trucks I live in Ohio my self
The voice over is a great addition to your videos. Its good to hear a full explanation of what youre doing.
glad you like it.
J.C. SMITH PROJECT4
I like most all videos that you do but my favorites usually involve lifting or installing bodies or cabs, or shortening frames. I like seeing the Gradall earn its keep.
then you are going to enjoy the next few builds...i have several frame cuts to do.
That's the story of my life! This is a budget build, end up going through everything and making it Napa brand new! Just because I want it dependable! Thanks JC
i would rather spend the time and money now than be broke down for something that could have been prevented. dependable is my goal!
That's the best, right way to do it if you want your project to be functional and reliable...
That mag-drill is a time saver. Good tip to use the old rails as the template for this truck. Well done.
i need things to be simple.....this was the most accurate way i could come up with to limit the chance of errors.
You sir, are a master of getting a chain set up with multiple pick points to get something off the ground !
I agree frame is good to where you think it is
Usually when your plasma uses to many consumables it’s dirty air and back burn
I ran a vertex large plasma for fabrication it had a very good water separates/dryers on it
i am thinking it was due to all the rust blowing back at the tips.
You and your wife work well together.
Thanks for another great video. Can't wait for part 2
thanks for watching. we have been together for a long time....i guess it shows.
Thanks for bringing us along! Take care Mr and Mrs JC
thanks for your loyal support mike.
To tighten up the head of your brass hammer, soak the head and end of wooden handle in coolant, it will swell the wood and last a while.
Awesome video jc , I always learn so much from your videos . Thanks for sharing. We are going to shorten a 3 ton , I like your story pole idea in one of your older videos.
i prefer the story pole. however, that wasnt an option in this situation. it all worked out. everything lined up good.....thankfully.
Another great video thank you J C for all the great video's I'm sure a lot of people are enjoying now as we have to stay in were I'm at especially for me as I am very high risk because I have under line medical issues thanks again J C ...A big thumbs up!!
best to stay home an avoid =anyone that you can.
GOING TO BE A NOTHER VERY WELL PUT TOGETHER TRUCK. I WOULD TRUST ALL YOUR TRUCKS 100 %
You have such a great helper there as your Wife !! What a privilege!! All the best from Canada
This is much better than the NCAA BASKETBALL 🏀
i dont watch sports....rarely watch tv. i prefer to watch things that i can learn from. that is enjoyable to me.
J.C. SMITH PROJECTS
I’m watching the videos that I listened to before. I’m in Tempe and don’t load until tomorrow so I’m watching the cab removal and cut up
You have a wife that works hard and is very supportive.
Those little cutters are the trick when drilling frames--just keep dril;l speed slow/steady..
JC your wife is brilliant! You work as I did, thorough. but not wasting money on your rebuilds. Keep up the content, love your time lapse with voice over.
Retired UK
glad you like the voice over. it has been getting some positive response. it is easier to get in all the details.
@@j.c.smithprojects Your voice is much clearer as there is no background noise. Me being a little deaf that is a real bonus!
Clever layout trick, accurate and a time saver. That Milwaukee mag drill is worth its weight in gold! Great video JC and excellent narration of the thought process and desired results. 5 stars my friend.
Hope you're both healthy, working safely, and able to enjoy your weekend!
Doug@ the "ranch"
you can either be very good at what you do or very good at making things simple.....i have to make it as simple as possible so i dont screw it up.
I just started using my Milwaukee Steel cutting Skill Saw to cut the frames. Faster than anything I've seen
I am looking forward to part 2. I want to see how the ABS gets re-connected.
both old and new abs sensors create a dc square wave but i need to compare the duty cycle from one to the other. the tone rings may be different.
When I seen the cutoff I was all stoked thinking you were gonna make it into a tandem 😂
no....sorry it is just a single axle.
@@j.c.smithprojects Double axle, dually wheels, would that make from a F750 to a (experimental) "F1050"?
Great job!
:-D
On cutting fluid.. I use harbor freight drill bits on small production runs using machine coolant and they go and go, hundreds of holes with a step bit.
The punch can be sized up by tight wrap of electric tape. Fab welder also had trouble finding right sizes at time. That Milwaukee works better then a friend's old corded mag drill. As you have a lot of those red cab Fords just figured you shopped well.
I’m glad to see you’re using the F-750. Sad to see a good truck have a mishap and then discarded
Very Nice! Similar to my F7 project truck, mines just a little older, , a 49. Years in and more to go.
Just remember the rear axle has a different angle than the front axle on a tandem set up. You will have to wedge the axle you are going to use to get the right angle when the air bags are pumped up. The engine angle and the axle are to be the same. I'm sure you know this.
that is a good point that i didnt mention. i will be sure to address the positive and negative angles and how they work when we set up the drive shafts.
love a good mag drill
You should get an air drier, best way to extend consumable life, much better than a filter. On the 45xp,# 220941 for a 5 pk of nozzles, 25-30$. # 220842 for electrodes, 5 pk approx 35-45$. I generally go by the paint being burnt also to determine integrity. A square works good also as the top flange will typically pull to the bottom flange with excessive heat. For layout, I knock off loose rust then spray a coat of contacting paint and use transfer punch if possible. Most of the time the holes are all at the same distance apart so templates work well. A tapered car reamer is ideal for a misaligned hole as it only shaves off what's needed and it won't grab like a twist drill. That rusty scale is really hard on annular cutters.
i have 2 air dryers. i think the rust was the culprit. i am thankful that all my holes lined up without needing to ream them. most of the trucks i take apart have holes drilled 1/16" larger than the bolt being used. so i didnt feel bad giving myself some wiggle room.
Looking good, you do an excellent job!
thanks kirk...its coming along. next part is ready.
And you have a pretty helper to
Hey J.C. i have made adaptors for hole alignment..find solid round stock the right diameter..drill the center out the diameter of your center punch..it will line you up quickly and speed up the job
i understand what you are saying and i will try that next time.
@@j.c.smithprojects i was looking online..i found large transfer center punch sets that go up from 1/4" diameter to inch diameter in 64th increments..cmt industries sells that set for $80..what i like about them is the shank is straight the entire length and has the point on the end..that set should cover 99% of your needs..im going to order a set myself
For your transfer punch delema, simply use the mag drill broach bit and center punch to transfer your holes. Just set the bit in the hole and tap the line up center pin. Simple and easy.
hole is punched and not perfectly round. it is in between normal sizes. 5/8" too small and 11/16 too big.
J.C. SMITH PROJECTS the joys of punched holes LOL
Got to tell you I like. The voice over
Your work.
And the suspension. Swap plus spending the $ to do it right when it comes time to sell. Should pay well.
it is hard to make time to do a project for myself but it is evern harder to bring it back in to do things that could have been done faster and cheaper the first go round.
I am out of breath just watching you guys work . Your work attitude and sense of fairness is a model for everyone . On the washer sizes uss is the larger size and sae is the smaller . In south fla. we have a bolt and fastener company called boltco their prices beat napa by at least 50% on grade 8 fasteners . You may have a similar company close to you .
God bless you and your family
we dont have any of those stores around here. i did find them. i swapped them out.
That would look good with one of them dump boxes I posted on Instagram Wednesday LOL. I'll be back up there to another load of them this week again. Not sure where there going yet they talked about 4-5 different places
maybe but this truck has too many miles to invest in a dump bed. we will save that for one that has better value.
Bridge reamer nice if you get that one hole in 14 that doesn’t go...lot a cell towers w looong holes..haha..... structural washers are the ones your reference too smaller size..w sae fine thread n lock nuts...fiills the hole an hi toque rated...nice job...
$154 dollars is pretty good for a budget build so far when you have everything 👍👊 Mrs. Smith doesn't mind getting her hands dirty, nice job.
this is just the tip of the iceberg! the parts bill is climbing!
I don’t have a mag drill but now I want one more than ever... I think I saw a comment about this but get some sort of air dryer for the plasma if you don’t already have one, makes a huge difference. Take care sir👍🏼
I have 2 air dryers...i think the rust is really the problem. it splatters back onto the tip and cause trouble. i bought this mag drill last year and it has paid for itself time and time again. well worth the investment for what i use it for.
True, you can get a little more life out of them but taking a tiny drill bit and getting all the garbage out of the nozzle then take one probably twice the size and square up the outside so your compressed air is coming out uniform, kinda like cleaning your oxy/ace tip.
thanks for the tips jesse. i will give it a try. i appreciate your input.
SAE flat washers are smaller outside diameter than standard flat washers, and usually a bit thicker. I'd use those for frame and shackle assembly, too, if washer head bolts weren't available. It's really interesting watching your projects. I want a plasma cutter and mag drill so bad I can taste it, but I can't justify the expense for the once in a blue moon I'd use them. 😂
i got the sae washers and swapped them out. i prefer to use a fine thread shouldered bolt and nut but i was trying to conserve money on this and saved over $100. going this way.
Wrap electrical tape around a small transfer punch to make a larger one. Wrap until it's the correct size. You're welcome!
gonna be a nice truck
The hardest thing on my plasma cutter is my buddies. They don’t realize the expense of the consumables until they’re done. So to add to the list of non loan tools, the plasma is there
Lots of solid advice and work! Is that the old lady working with you? About to redo a frame on my own F650
As far as hammer handles go, if they are wood. Put them in a bucket of water for 24hrs and they will soak up the water and swell. Better than replacing handles.
You have probably mentioned where you get your hardware but please refresh my memory.
Nice work! You’re looking to get SAE flats. (USS are always the larger diameter).
i ended up getting the sae washers and swapping them out. you can see a picture on my community section of my channel home page.
Keep up the great work! Always enjoy your vids!
That's the way to move a truck! 💪🏼
i dont always tow trucks.........but when i do, its with a gradall!!
ANOTHER EXCELLENT VIDEO.....KEEP THEM COMING...WHEN YOU CAN.....THANK YOU~~~!!!!
you make it look so easy /nice team work and nice video
just nuts and bolts.
Can't wait to see it done
parts are all here....now i just have to get back to it!
The smaller washers are SAE, standard washers are USS. I use flange heads when I can. Industrial fastener suppliers are much cheaper than dealer or the dreaded Fastenal.
i normally use fine thread grade 8 flange bolts and nuts. in this case there are over 50 bolts and the cost was far beyond what this hardware cost. trying to control the financial flooding!
@@j.c.smithprojects never seen fine thread before, just national coarse and metric. The metric stuff is pretty pricey so I sometimes oversize the holes and use standard.
i have a couple leftover from an international i did. i will post a picture on instagram and the community section. i really like them for frame work.
It’s a freightliner cutoff. I’d try freightliner for ABS sensors.
tandem axle f750 would have been bad-ass tho.
Rusty gold , good save on the rear ends!
I don't know if you got the washers from menards but that's where I get mine. They have the smaller overall diameter washers in grade 8. Course I use grade 8 bolts on anything I bolt together because I like things stronger than needed.
Menards also has really nice heavy duty weld on d rings. The ones on my hitch plate are 3/4", good for 20,000 lbs. They do have 1" d rings good for 45,000 lbs, but those are the break strengths.
i went to menards....they wanted $0.86 each and i needed 56. for $48.16. i got them from my local supplier for $23.
@@j.c.smithprojects true almost 50$ is a bit for washers. Completely understand since you don't want to waste money. However now I know people who know where to get better deals. Last time I bought those washers from menards was near 2 years ago.
Don't know what size bolts you are using but TSC and Rural King sell hardware by the pound. They both have a big selection of grade 8 hardware. I personally like Rural King just a tad better. Might save you some $!
i usually go to a bolt supplier to get shouldered bolts and washers in fine thread but these bolts came from tractor supply in part 2.
Excellent channel with great content, thank you J.C.
thanks danny!
you need a coalescing filter, i was going through tips on my hypertherm until my dealer told me what was cousing it
i will look into that. thanks for the tip.
Looking good.
Nice job J C..
thanks.
Love your videos!
thanks bill.
thats a freightliner m2 106 and 112 air ride axle if you are looking for parts. I just put one on my f750
older than m2
will they make a 60''' drive shaft, we had to put a support bearing.
I buy hardware from Tractor Supply. Grade 8. By the pound.
that is where most of this came from.
Your doing good work keep it up cheers 🍻
Your wife is a good woman. You should cherish her as I am sure you do.
If the paint is good the frame is still good.
You are so lucky to have a great partner.
Where can you get one of those drills?
not the rebuilding of the axles but just for air ride setup
Putt the bras hamer in a bucket of water. The steel swels
What are you putting on this truck? Service body? Flat bed? Dump box?
i have plans of what i want to put on it but i dont want to say because all of my plans are written in sand.....they can change at any time.
J.C. SMITH PROJECTS yeah sounds about the same as me! Lol
Great video
thanks.
your blowing through plasma cutter tip because there is not enough air it should be spitting sparks 10 to 15 foot min mine shoots the about 15 foot.
not the case. i have plenty of air.
How many of those red f750's did you buy...
All of them!
Great build. Couple of questions and one is did you remove the corrosion on the spring hanger brackets where they mount to the frame? Being aluminum I am sure they had some and why didn't you paint the frame before mounting? Again great build as usual. Wish I had your ability to do some of that kind of stuff.
i didnt paint the frame because this is just "mock up". i have more drilling to do on the frame for the cross members. it will all have to come apart again. once i get everything in place, i can them measure accurately for my driveshaft. i did remove the corrosion....aluminum hangers...great idea....
154$ seems stupid expensive for the bolts, do you have a Würth around ? if so buy bolts by the box Nice job, thank you for the effort to film, edit, and post these videos.
these are over 50 grade 8 5/8" and 3/4" bolts plus washers, lock washers and nuts. this was the least expensive option available to me.
The smaller washers are called SAE washers
I was able to buy some. i swapped them out. i am much happier with these.
would you be interested in doing this job for hire? And how much?
Hey JC for around how much are you selling your f650 and f750 box trucks for ? Really interested in purchasing a truck and love your page !!!!!! @
Do you run a filter on your air system for the plasma? Water raises heck with them. Rust and poor grounding also wrecks the tips
i do. i have filters and dryers. i think the rust was the big problem.....plus the poor ground on the horribly rusty truck we just got done taking apart.
Following!!
you might find this build more interesting than some others will.
👍👍
57+44+43 = 144, but then the axle would have to be mounted 3 more inches to the rear?
144" of driveshaft means i would have a cab to axle of 143. i dont have enough frame for that. i set the axle at 120". i need to remove 65" from the shafts.
@@j.c.smithprojects also, l forgot to mention that you can put that brass hammer upside down in a bucket of water & the wood handle will swell up inside the head
Use McMaster Carr
looked into it.....they were far more expensive.
I bet you are making a tow truck/ flat bed.
you will just have to watch all the parts of this series to find out ray!
SAE washer
What are the size of the bolts on the carrier in the frame And what type of chuck is in the Mag, Very good Video
cross member bolts are 5/8" and the spring hangers are 3/4" the mage drill has the weldon style chuck permanently mounted with a 1/2" chuck that can be locked in also.
I like it. Where do you get your hardware? Around her we have Farm and Fleet where we can get grade 8 hardware by the pound. A fraction of the price compared to something like Fastenal.
tractor supply, farm supply and another farm store. they sell by the pound also....this is just a lot of bolts.
an washers I think
i found what i wanted. they are called sae washers. i swapped them out before i edited this video but didnt add it in.
That was a very long frame dang
these f750 trucks i buy are all the same length....this one just seemed to look longer in the video for some reason.
