I almost ordered from them but chose to build my own from scratch using 8020 and other suppliers. I paid less than half of what you spent and made a 30X48 machine. Lead screws instead of rack, 45mm rails, 1200 oz motors and the size is perfect for my application. Also I was able to buy it in several chunks over the coarse of a year. This was not nearly as convenient as a ready to go kit and non productive during the whole assembly time but it was a good choice for my budget. I have sub'd and look forward to seeing how you use your machine. Thanks for sharing!

Very useful video. I've sent them an email asking some of these same questions, but they must be REALLY busy as I'm still waiting for a response. I am planning pretty much the same system you've gotten, but hadn't decided on the spindle--I was planning to go with a router to start with. That said I might not end up with anything from them, as if they're so busy that it takes days to get back with some basic information, then I'll wager that the wait time is going to be in the order of months.
The system looks pretty good though--I just need something within 3-6 weeks, not 3-6 months.
Thank you for this most interesting information. I've been always wondering why some companies opt out to cheapen their design/product by building the base out of wood or some kind of plastic. That might be ok if your plans are to use the equipment strictly for laser engraving where there is no mechanical friction to worry about. The rigidity is just not there if your plans include any kind of machining of metals. I'm planing to build my own CNC router with 80/20 extrusions for the backbone of the unit. Your information about the options you chose and the cost of the kid is most valuable to me in deciding whether to design/build my own or go for a unit readily available. Thanks again for the info!

Thanks for the informative video. in the beginning i considered this machine but i realized that in the price you paid (my limit was 10k$) i can get better machine from China. in the end i ordered 4X6 machine, with Leadshine Servo, 3kW spindle, 10HP vacuum pump, 10HP Dust collector (for central vacuum system, although it quite crap) and other misc. the machine is with massive R&P system and beside configuration which took me 3 days, came already assembled.

Since you say your machine was massive and already assembled I would have needed a forklift or loading dock to unload something like that. One of the reasons that the Avid CNC appealed to me is that it is made in the USA and a kit that you assemble yourself and although it is packaged in a lot of boxes there is not one box that weighs over 40lbs so it was very easy on this old man's back.
I'd love to get one of those.

Great video. You can get a 4x4 Phantom cnc for about what you paid, and it's all steel construction and no need to build anything. Comes off the truck ready to go. All you need is to wire the power cord.

What software would you recommend using? With 3D printers and CO2 Lasers I use three different programs. A CAD program mainly free Fusion 360 for hobbyists, a program that converts the CAD to G code or other if required and one that runs the device itself. What are the different ones you would recommend for a new CNC user, but knows the basics?
I've been creating different things with my CO2 Laser and 3D printers and wanted to add the CNC capabilities. One limiting factor in purchasing a CNC is moving from a hobby of tinkering to how to setup a business for sales. I don't know if I could justify the purchase if I couldn't start making money.
What advice do you have for someone trying to break into finding a market?
My father and grandfather both had shops and I worked in my dads shop before I joined the military. I've been at a hobby level first with 3D printers and now a CO2 Laser. I've had my eye on a CNC, but don't think I can justify it as a hobby unless I can make a business out of it.
The issue is how do you make the jump?

I will be making one piece aircraft wings 30 ft long in my shop. Possibly 15 ft 2 piece wing. Do you have a suggestion for a cnc machine for personal use. You are the most grounded and realistic cnc youtuber I have seen & you have a similar attitude and approach to shop work as I so I thought I would ask you.

Based on your experience with the Avid, will you create Gatton design 3.0?
Some linear rails and NEMA 34 would be an easy add for the Gatton.
Very informative and I do like the fact that I would not need any truckers & fork lift operators unloading a machine at my place. But how difficult would it be to assemble this on my own.

That is such a nicer CNC then the X carve. I went a much cheaper option. OnefinityCNC and very happy with it. but that thing (Yours) has some real nice options. If i find myself needing a stronger machine I'm defiantly going to keep these guys in mind. (so far i have not needed) love the linear rails, upgrading steppers is a big +, thx for sharing.. But i will say you can upgrade the Onefinity to 50"x32" really easy and a real simple to build system. 30 min to put machine together. with the X50 upgrade your still below 3,000 i think.. 300$ for water cooled spindle, 330$ to add a 4th axis. I dont think you did bad for what you got.... what size of screw ball is in the X and Y?

Great video, Dave. It was very interesting seeing the difference between the prices that AVID puts on their website and what you actually end up spending for a complete system. I'm looking at the same brand CNC. I'd like to split up in half CNC for wood and half for Plasma cutting.
Question: After purchasing everything you mentioned in the video, how much was the actual router that does the cutting? Do you need a specific HP router? Will only certain brand routers fit on that CNC? Lastly, should you only use 1/2 inch collet size bits on a CNC?
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment AlexxxG but I don't understand your comment. The prices that I listed in the video are EXACTLY the same as what it on the Avid CNC website. The only thing that I had to get a quote on was how much shipping was going to cost. Everything else is totaled up when you select the base machine you want and add the options you want.
Also, I mention in the video that I purchased the 2.2kW Spindle/VFD plug and play package so I'm not using a router. They do sell router mounts for just about every brand of router so you could use a router with this kit.
@@DaveGatton My Apologies... I watched your video again and realized the Router WAS included in your system (the Plug and Play Spindle / VFD System) . I was checking out other CNC systems and they do not include a router. I'm also not experienced with CNC's and I didn't realize the correct terminology is Spindle System..not router...
Hi Dave, I was wondering what kind of tolerance with the backlash you get with the rack and pinion for linear motion?
I’m looking to buy my first CNC and have about $2,000 budget. It seems this is out my league but what do you think about the Onefinity versus Avid CRP4824 4’x2’ ($2500), Millright Mega V ($1,900), or Stepcraft D.840 ($2,200)? I’ve no idea which seems the better value but if the Onefinity seems guild build quality and has accuracy/repeatability it seems quite nice that it’s easy to disassemble as my shop is in my basement and it’s better to save space when not in use. Please let me know your thoughts.

I be interested to see where they're sourcing their parts from, price seems a little high but for people without engineering experience building equipment like this, it's definitely a good price. I'm designing and building my own and total parts cost is about 1/3 of this.
You're also getting their warranty and support for the cost you pay. Plus all the engineering and time it took to make it an easy build.
What is your expected time for the machine to pay for itself?
What brand is the router on this one?

You clearly havent priced out comparable components or you are discounting the labor need to recreate them yourself. You can build cheaper for sure but mostly by building components yourself. There are cheaper parts out there but you will be getting less by spending less.

I would imagine that since it's been over three years the prices have gone up a little. Since I tell you in the video exactly what I purchased and how much it cost right down to the penny you could go to their website and compare the current prices. Thanks for watching.

Yes. I've had my Avid Pro4848 for about three and a half years and it's been a real workhorse. I have no regrets whatsoever in purchasing this machine. It's been worth every penny. I'm currently finishing up my squaredrop camper build and as soon as that's complete I'll be starting another big project that will be done with my Avid CNC.

Okay - is this strictly conversational programming, or can you program straight G-code into the post-processor?
I run G-code that is generated by the post processor in V-Carve Pro.
@@DaveGatton - Well, that sucks. I hate conversational programming of any kind. I learned G-code in the early 70's backwards and forwards, and prefer it. It's faster for me than all the dance steps of a particular programming method. Let's face it - conversational programming was invented so bosses could hire dummies to run machines and pay them less. I am rather jealous it makes my GarageWorx look like a cheap chineese unit. I rather bummed out I thought you be using your GarageWorx machine more since those machines are supposedly more durable than a cheap aluminium CNC machine. The AvidCNC was going to be my original purchase but went with GarageWorx since it was made of steel.
Well, as you can see from this video you would have needed about 5 times as much money to purchase an Avid CNC like this instead of the GarageWorX CNC. Would that have fit into your budget? You are trying to compare an entry level hobby machine to this ProSeries Avid. Not really a fair comparison.
As a long time owner of multiple CNC machines, the AVID package you got is a good machine at a fair price for a package machine (especially US made, with US support). People who have the knowledge to peice together their own controller/stepper and VFD/spindle packages CAN save some money....but for businesses, time is money, so the extra work and time required may not be worth it. I find AVID and AXIOM to be what I'd consider the top pro-consumer machines out there. Chinese machines are a crapshoot. If you know what you're doing, you can get good ones....if you don't then you can really screw yourself. Also, Chinese support and documentation is horrible to non-existent, so be prepared to be your own machine tech.
Dave: Since I bought this.. and this.. and this.. along with this.. and this. I figured I might as well get this.. and this. While Im at it, it would be stupid not to get this.. and this since I already bought this with the addition of this.

There are many people out there who are actually considering the purchase of an AVID CNC System and getting this type of insite is extremely valuable and interesting.
Of course this type of video may not be as interesting as your "Pollination of Tomatoberry with a Toothbrush" but we can't all be "CZcams Stars" like you...

In my opinion the cnc industry is way way way overpriced that includes software and machines..buying used is the best way to go ...you can save a lot of money and let the orig owner take the initial substantial depreciation hit......beautiful machine though.

@@rceric1 i know many people who have built machines similar in design and size as yours for way less than 2k in parts..but like you said its all about convenince you can pay 10k for conveniwence or you can pay 2k and try to build it yourself.or you can pay 3-4k for a similar design from a more realistic priced competitor.product..its a personal decision...when you buy things and keep adding.on .it costs a fortune..i typically stay away from ala carte type purchases..thats how those types of companies make a ton of money and leave the customer with an empty wallet lol...opinions are opinions...and facts are facts...im sure a fact is the markup on that machine is pretty high maybe 300-500%

I don't like this cnc design at all! All dust from work is falling all over linear rails/bearings and axis rack and pinion drives... Even with cnc dust shoe You can't prevent some amount of dust to be scattered around working area...
they really need a lesson on customer service..... try to work with them is bullshit. their web site is rubbish.
The only thing I can agree with is the CZcams user name you picked for yourself.

That statement about some people being "just plain nosy" is bullshit, if you don't want people commenting or asking questions don't put your video's on CZcams.
For a guy that builds cnc kits and sells them, he buys an avid cnc. That should tell you his product is vastly inferior.
Quite the contrary my friend. The Gatton CNC kits are so popular that I couldn't keep up with production of them using only my Gatton CNC because it is a hobby machine. The Avid can produce the kits much faster with the same quality as my Gatton CNC.
