We Need a Bigger Boat: A San Jose Sharks Tale

  • This video was supposed to be finished up a few weeks ago. Well, that was before everything went to shit and was subsequently cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. (Un)Fortunately, these videos have not been suspended yet, so they shall continue.
    Have I mentioned I hate the Sharks yet? This year has been more than enough proof of why. A GM getting completely desperate to push for a cup, sacrificing a lot of the future and team depth to reach for it, only for those moves to backfire painfully. This wasn't supposed to happen for another year or two, yet it's the way of the Sharks: Even when expectations are low, they somehow go lower than that. It's the only thing they're reliable at.
    That and pain. Lots and lots of pain. This video will show you a lot of it.

They suck and very well may not get either but the Sharks also suck and they have given Ottawa these great odds. Byfield is very likely going to be a Senator at least at the start of his career but the Sharks get nothing out of this. This is just like last year when the last-place Senators gave their first round to the Avalanch for Duchene, but the difference is that it was ONLY the Senators pick that had good lottery odds. The Sharks gave the Senators 2 of the bottom 3 team's picks, sure they didn't know this at the time but in hindsight, it looks really bad. Yep! Sharks fans really are passionate. If the Sharks actually won a couple championships during the 2000's or 2010's, the team and their fanbase would get WAY more attention and recognition. They have been "overdue" for a Stanley Cup for over a decade and the team is STILL not even 30 years old..... Tampa won in 2004, took 10 years, the Ducks won in 2007, took 14 years... As a Sharks fan, I envy these fanbases. Sure Tampa choked BIG time last year, but they still have 2004 to reminisce on. The Ducks had their own "Sharks run" of winning the Division every year from 2013-2017, and never sniffed the Cup Final, further emphasizing that 2007 was more a fluke than 2003 even was (and I was ROOTING for them in 2003).
      At this point, I've accepted that falling short is just part of the deal as a sports fan, and perhaps one day, maybe Sharks fans will finally experience what Caps fans felt in 2018 and Blues fans felt in 2019, RELIEF that all the years of agony and heartbreak were WORTH it. One day.....in 20XX, Sharks fans around the world will cry tears of happiness, and not just tears. Peace out and stay safe everyone! Im going to go play Franchise Mode and manage an expansion team to a Stanley Cup.

I was spoiled most of my life to have a team this was constantly good and made the playoffs basically every year (except one). I knew one day we were gonna suck. Didn't think it was going to be this year, but it might be the beginning. It comes with sports, teams rise and fall. Look at Detroit, they were a power house in the early 2000's. No one thought they were going to suck, but look at them now. Doug is one of those GM's that loves old players and rental forwards. It might've worked a few years ago, but now it is biting us in the ass. We have no prospects, our contracts and money scenario is a nightmare, and players like lebanc and Timo have no been playing like we expected them too. As a Sharks fan, it’s hard to argue with anything you said here. However, with the new draft picks and the abundance of cap space we will have this offseason, I think they should still improve next season, if anything because they can’t do any worse than how they’re doing now. However, actually doing something next season is another story, like always 🙄

    • @AV57
      @AV57 Před 4 lety +2

      danynumero6, the Sharks currently have a projected $17.4 million left in cap space for next season. And they only have 5 D-men, 1 goalie, and 9 forwards under contract for next season. So, they need another 4 forwards, 2 D-men, and a goalie, which averages out to about 2.5 million per player. That’s not much space. Even if they grabbed a reliable veteran forward at a modest $5 million, then they can only offer an average of $2 million to everyone else without a contract yet. Unless they have a prospect catch fire, there’s no outside help coming to fix the Sharks next season.

    • @danynumero6
      @danynumero6 Před 4 lety

      AV 57 Fair point, but the Sharks could potentially have a couple prospects ready to make the big club this coming season. Ryan Merkley has been tearing it up in juniors. Plus there’s the first round pick we got for Goodrow and for the most part, Wilson has done well with his first round selections with guys like Couture, Hertl, and Meier. If both areas work out, they may be able to acquire some outside help for a fairly low cost. And I’m not saying this will make them Cup contenders, but it should improve them somewhat.

    • @zenzyfx1778
      @zenzyfx1778 Před 4 lety

      @@danynumero6 Not to ruin your optimism, but we're likely going to be in a situation like the Hawks (close to the bottom of the west, but still competitive at times). Healthy Karlsson, Hertl & Couture would help for sure, but to see our draft pick (likely #1-3) go to the Sens and us having a pick near the 28-30th of the 1st round doesn't even compare one bit.
      Our bright spots are ELC players like Gregor, True & Ferraro who have been absolutely solid and show promise for our future. We were playing better in the 2nd half of the season (close games, albeit regulation losses) and played much better collectively as a team. Consistent play by Simek along with his contract is a huge plus. Meier heated up at the end of the season.
      Our biggest issues - our goaltending is still inadequate and it's only going to drag us further down. Vlasic, Burns & Karlsson continuing to show they're slowing down (Burns still has the offense thankfully) and definitely not top-tier defenseman in a fast-paced game.
      I really don't want to place any high expectations on our team next season but I'm very glad this season is done with and hopefully, we can draft some solid pieces with the pics we have (DW needs to draft a goalie asap).

    I'm not a Sharks fan, but this vid urinated on my mood immensely. I know what post-season failure is like because I've been a Capitals fan most of my 53 years here on earth. I thought we were forever doomed until 2018. Just have faith - it'll happen when you least expect it.

    I just got into Hockey in 2016. Live in SJ, so become sharks fan. Watch them blow their chances at a cup. Get really into hockey 2019. Sharks suck and lose their first round pick........... Still love them though

      Win or lose, the Sharks are always exciting.
      Even if they suck, I can't wait to see how they'll play next season.
