Wake on WAN (WoW) Tutorial - Turn on your PC from anywhere in the world!

  • I didn't bother you with theory behind this procedure but if you are interested here is explanation.
So when you want to turn on your PC from different network, other than one on which is your PC connected (basically you can be anywhere in the world), you need to set your public IP (not local!). Because public IP is dynamic (means that it is changing) you need to use provider like no-ip (I used in video) so you can create hostname which will automatically refresh value of public IP when it changes. Then everytime your public IP change, your hostname will provide accurate information.
**IF YOU HAVE PROBLEM AND THIS IS NOT WORKING DO THESE STEPS!**
    1. Press Windows button and type "Device Manager" (Without quotes),
    2. In the list, find "Network adapters" and double-click on it,
    3. Then find proper network adapter, usually starting with Realtek or Intel...
    4. Double-click on it,
    5. Then click on "Power Management" tab and make sure that these 2 boxes are checked. "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer",
    6. Now click on tab called "Advanced",
    7. In the list that appears find "Wake on Magic Packet" and click once on it,
    8. On the right side set value to be "Enabled",
    9. Click Ok and you are done.
*IF PROBLEM STILL PERSIST YOU MIGHT NEED TO CHANGE SETTINGS IN YOUR BIOS*
Google on "How to set bios for wake on lan".
For any additional info you need, please leave a comment.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge i wanted to say this works because i tried it my self .
Just wanted to add something: 1-instead of setting a dynamic dns for your router (some routers don't support free dynamic dns services (like mine)) you can ask your internet service provider for a static ip (in my country is super cheap) 2- you need to set a local static ip address for pc you intend to turn on. Otherwise modem may send wake on lan packets to a different device which won't work out

My moonlight on steam deck does has a connection terminated error after awhile but going to my router and changing my Firewall DMZ DMCPS-Fixed rather than Dynamic, it doesnt have the error. I just have to remember to change it back to Dynamic so i can take advantage of turning my pc on away from home.

This is cool but won't work if you're behind cgnat where ISP blocks port 1-1000. Instead if your router has vpn built in you can turn that on and asks the router to generate an open vpn profile with desired username and password. (The simpler PPTP option doesn't work for me)
Then find wake on lan apk on android, set up your device first by using the local wifi. Then import the ovpn profile(s) by using openvpn apk. After that, whenever you need remotely wake up PC from WAN, you will need to turn openvpn and finally wake up the device.

I think you can do this with one step, install tailscale on the devices, done. All devices will be on a virtual private network. All this flaffing about will not work with most routers that internet providers give you as there are no firewall user options and they block magic packets for wake up from outside. So what to do now? The tailscale part is to fix ip address, but now you need an 'insider', a device that is always on inside the network that you can remote into to send magic packet from inside the network. I try anydesk to insider chromebook, not working/supported, teamviewer want 15 a month now for the privilege of wake up functionality, iphone, ipad insider? no remote that i can find yet. i will lose my mind. Static IP requires business account in a lot of countries, then you need to buy a router with firewall options if you are going that way. But you better know a lot about security.
