Thanks Christian! How topical and timely! I'm glad you're back. I just implemented power monitoring of my servers using HomeAssistant with some Sonoff S31 mini plugs. I can't wait to enhance the UI with a power button. FWIW you can use the Sonoff to switch power but I disable this functionality so that I don't accidently power off a device when I'm blindly exploring wires and by invertedly power off a server without a proper shutdown.

This is also really fun to enable on your actual desktop PC and setting up a trigger through say homebridge. Being able to turn my pc on and off whenever is so lovely, I even have it sync with my desk lamp depending on time of day.

Thanks. This was rather simple, and pfsense has wake on lan service. Now I don't have to walk across the room to turn on my test system when I want to try something on it. 🤣

Great video, I do magic packets and also use the lom interfaces eg. dell-idrac hpe-ilo supermicro-ipmi and send wake up and shut-down instructions via ssh and scripts.
This is a wonderful video - great instructions. Another alternative is what I do is use govee smart plugs. After powering off pc safetly remotely i shut the power off in the govee app. In the bios of the server pc i make sure that power turns on when power is detected. So when i turn power back on on the govee smart plug my server will auto power on. Just another alternative :)
10:36 small addition: the seventh bit of the MAC-address indicates, wether the address is a globally unique address or a generated one:
bit 0: unique, natural MAC address
bit 1: generated address
so for example
01:23:45:67:89:AB is natural while
03:23:45:67:89:AB has been created

One difference, at least for me, was that I had to reboot home assistant for it to pick up the entity.
Interesting, I'd not heard of HomeAssistant before this video. What I was doing was using a Raspberry Pi Zero with a static IP plugged in via USB to my router. If the router is up, it's up. Then I can VPN into my home network, and terminus into the Pi from my phone to run the WoL script.
I'll check out home assistant, that looks very useful!
Great video! Wake On Lan is neat, I've used it a lot in the past. But after trying the PiKVM I highly prefer its reliability with remote ATX control, plus all the other benefits of the PiKVM. TBF it might be a bit overkill if it's just to wake up a secondary server from time to time.

My supermicro servers can be powered on by IPMI commands. No OS changes required. When the server boots, the OS just boots up!

What about when you don't have /etc/network/interfaces => There's only folders there if-up.d, etc. and in there wpasupplicant. Also writing the command in there doesn't execute after reboot.
ip addr show is fine, but ‘ip a s’ is even better 😂. More so ‘ip a’ as show is the default behavior. A neat thing I learned this week after finally ditching ifconfig.
Love the video Christian! Well, I love all your videos, and have been eagerly waiting for anything new. This is a great topic, and I have been using WoL for years, but never was able to get it work on my Linux Server. Tried your method, and can't do it without sudo, so the /etc/network/interfaces change won't work on reboot. :(
Anyone on here know the solution? I know this isn't a forum, but if you have an easy answer, I'd appreciate a reply. :)
I love wake on lan. I have some HP microservers for NAS's that don't need to be on that often. I have a Thinkpad (with broken screen) as a server for common stuff. All are woken by wakeonlan and suspended/powered-off via ssh. I have a web interface running on my Pi3 so that I can control it all through a browser (e.g. from my phone).
Is there a better way with the routing? In the company I work we have a software distribution tool (like the microsoft endpoint configuration manager) that also can send WoL packets, but because the tool runs in the server network and the clients are in their own network section the WoL doesn't work directly with it. We use also a VM that is in the Client network to turn on the clients with a WoL tool. It would be nicer if we just could route the packets directly into the client network.
This seems like a pretty cool idea, but I'm sort of stumped when I comes to mine I think, I have full disk encryption with LUKS, and I'm not sure if the home assistant could detect the prompt, and maybe remote input a password, but I think that would be necessary for me to implement this fully on my machine. Also preferably not storing the password on the home assistant device since that's part of the beauty of my encrypted disk is you're screwed until you have me there to type it in or something

This is a good intro. I would like to point out wol is not used (or shouldn't be) in business/enterprise/carrier networks. Either use remote managed pdu's for physical, or api calls if using virtualization. If you need to use it for bulk updates of clients for example, make sure you have acl's on your switch infrastructure to firewall access from your jump machine only! There are better options, scheduled on/off on the os for example.
As a newcomer to enterprise IT, why shouldn't it be used?
@@jakedrake99 security. Don't want systems turning on when they shouldn't be. Think about relatively insecure dev boxes, cert roots, anything that isn't hardened.
Actually, for professional IT, there is HBI that you can use software like MAAS to monitor the server, install system, auto provisioning, etc.
It would also be great to be able to schedule the startup and shutdown of the servers. I don't know if every BIOS can do that yet.
I'm using kubuntu and don't have network/interfaces. Is there somewhere else I can have this script?

How you manage your Servers in Visual Studio?
I've noticed that if my proxmox doesn't shut down properly, such as during a power outage, WoL doesn't work before property reboot. Why?
Anybody know why you have to input the MAC address into the Switch setup and then again into the Button setup ? If you are selecting the switch as part of the button creation process then wont the info already be available to the button ?
Please don`t forget to talk about the Security Risks behind the WOL over Internet. Normally it's save to use it on the Local Network (in most cases), but especially it's used over internet, it could be a not so harmless risk!!!

I don't understand why os support would be required to turn on the computer. The os isn't active, since the computer is powered off. What am I missing?

I have 2 Dell poweredge servers with IDRAC, but they are on 24-7 and I rarely touch them.
Take HPE-Server's und u got iLO remote-Managment or Dell AND you could see the booting procedure! It's the most coolest feature to remote control headless your Server's
hi, is it possible for os to detect if it was powered by wol or not,?? i have pc whith dualboot windows/linux and i want to set grub tu run windows on normal boot and linux on wol
second question, you have activated wol at the os level do that change anything to grub ?

I do use windows server in my home lab setup. Yes, I'm been using it from Windows Server 2000 then I went to Server 2003 then Home Server 2003 then Home Server 2011/2008R2/SBS11 SBS11 boot CD from Dell creates the Driver Partion then it installed my Drivers right from Factory then I setup the 20211 System years ago this way then I Went to Synology Nas but still use Server 2022 yes love it yes SBS 2011 is the same platform as home server 2011 same family so funny though no one tells you that but I Knew they Both run 2008R2 so lol worked perfectly installing those drivers manually Locks up the system Dell was weird with that OS

Yeah, that should be put inside the a yaml config in netplan /etc/netplan/...yaml and then add a "post-up" section under your interface

You don’t need it on a VM or Container, just use remote commands :D
