A bit of context about the song: this is a tribute to their frontwoman Courtney's grandmother, who passed last year. Due to the lockdowns, Courtney wasn't able to say goodbye. At the same time, their video director Dylan is dealing with his grandmother's illness, who's been suffering from dementia for many years now. Courtney and Dylan wrote the song and video in tandem, as a joint tribute, to tell both of those stories; I'd say they massively succeeded. What a wonderful track.
You're right about this being a "softer" song: so far, this is the only song where Courtney has only done clean vocals. If you want a HUGE deep dive into Spiritbox, there is a full band live session: "The Mara Effect live at Silverside Sound." It's a 16-minute track that showcases a lot of what they have to offer.
By the way, I really enjoy listening to you picking these songs apart. Keep up the great work.

  • @muaddib4329
    @muaddib4329 Před 3 lety +63

My biggest take away from the song besides tears was the way that the breakdown (for lack of a better word) mirrors the violence it brings to their mind. It becomes so chaotic and dissonant along with that slow trudge down in tempo to symbolize the final moments of her sanity melting together until they grind to a halt. The way that last bit of synth distortion fades into those soft synth chords is truly HAUNTING.

Good decompose. In this case though you missed 1 instrument. The Video. Spiritbox is described as an art collective and their videos are usually just as much of the "whole art package" as the instruments. But even moreso in this instance. The song is largely about alzheimers/dementia (and death of Courtney's grandmother). So the song sonically brings you through that, but the video exponentially escalates the emotional impact.
That said, much appreciation on the breakdown. Excellent details, as always. Take in the video on your next playthrough.

I love songs that are more about colors and this is definitely about colors. From airy early morning orange hue of the sun trying to break through the clouds at the beginning and then slowly the clouds start swirling into a dark gray mass towards the end and then.., a gentle and warm red hue of the setting sun briefly breaking through the clouds again. Amazing production on this song.

If you watch the video carefully, you'd notice that the guitar is a 7-string.
Its been tuned to an 8 string though.
And to add to what you said about her singing, the overwhelming wash of harmonies are just incredible. Very powerful. I love how it reoresents the subject of the song so, so very well.

For me this feels almost like a portrayal of dementia, especially toward the end, when the people and things a person once knew, suddenly they don't recognise what those things and who those people were, with dementia you're understanding and relation of knowledge of the world disappears and only the things that have the most meaning to them is the only triggers/portals to remembering you're past, eventually though even the most imprinted memories wash out, and I think that's the heavy bit of the song, its like being in a void, not understanding anything that's going on, cognition is minimized but you're still fairly conscious... but then the end part, its said people with dementia at there end, probably cause of serotonin release the static and void like state goes away and you're suspended in a heavenly bliss with even sometimes potential memory retention, before they go x/ to me this song almost completely is encapsulating that.

I haven't seen any of this guy's videos before, but I love it when people view other music genres as an art form. There are many cases where metal and its subgenres are just thrown out the window because people don't want to open their minds to its composition.

    Hi there Mr. Geebz!
I found your interpretation and reactions very accurate and close to mine. Thank you a lot for this sharing and good look in future!
I'd like to introduce a band which rhythmically goes beyond some Meshuggah stuff with a very recognizible melodic manner
    Will you please decompose
    VILDHJARTA band
from Masstaden LP, preferably in instrumental, so you will touch it to the core!
    Thank you!
