    The Finnish and Norwegian tradition originally comes from Sweden. This because what is now Finland originally was the eastern half of Sweden and Norway was in union with Sweden.

    Hetvägg is absolutely the best way to eat semla.
    I had one today even though it is not even tuesday

    You should use a spoon to eat hetvägg.

    I tasted semlor at Petit France in Kungsholmen, near norr mälarstrand. They where delicous!

    Kaffekoppen in Fruängen has gotten voted best semla in the area (liljeholmen-hägersten) several years in a row.... might be worth testing, since it is not that far from where you guys are residing

      Fyi The so called "hot wall" was once accused of killing a king and some people wanted it banished because of that.

      I know, right? It might seem odd, but it's the only way I've figured out how to eat it! 😅👌🏻 So, yeah, fork and knife it is, like at some fancy high society party! 😂🫅

    actually hetvägg needs to be eaten with spoon. You are supposed to get some milk with a slice of the bun......eventually it will get messy but though it looks bad, it's still very tasty.
    Also normally you do not drink coffee in combination with hetvägg.....you got the hot milk for that part. If you keep to the "dry" version then a cup of coffee is alright 🙂

    Note. Whipped cream is a fairly new "invention". It came in 1920s. So before that Semla looked very different than today.

    If you look at historical depictions and descriptions of hetvägg the whole thing is completely drenched in milk so you might even have added less than they did. I guess there's a reason why extremely few people do it nowadays though.

    Yes, I think you got it right! Becuse;
    Eating Semla on that day in our bussiest tourist cafees, dont do that for your "best experiance"!
    Its still this, do as the locals, they vouldnt enter that cafe.. full of tourits.. they know other cafes.. if they need a Semla!
    Then two topics, "fettisdagsbulle" and "Semla"!
    Fettisdagsbulle was invented by "probably" a royal baker as a desert befor going in to the fasting period! And every christian fasts around Easter!? In anyway after fettisdag comes askonsdag, "ash wendsday", followed by dymmeltorsdag, "quite thursday", followe by långfredag, "long friday", one suposed to not have fun on that day.. only remeber Jesus suffering at the cross.. and suffer one self! Its the same that make cristians not eating meat at fridays, only fish, one have as a christian embrace ones suffering! Well there is no Christians anymore.
    Then to Semla.. its Italian, "Semolina", white flour without any fibers/grain shells.. it was expencive and for desserts!
    Hetvägg is another topic, it was very few that could afford newly baked Semla.. it become dry, and small amount of heated milk could make the bun to soften up!
    Then to newer traditions of eating "Semla", "there is no way to eat Semla with dignity"!
    Step one, take of the lid, scope up some cream, after that.. take the semla in your hand (like in USA) and take a big bite, one supose to get powderd sugar on ones nose and cream at ones uper lip! Everyone get embaresed.. then you are equal!

    You really shouldn't put your semla in warm milk! It makes the bun turn all soggy!

    Sadly Vetekatten is no longer what it used to be. I think it should be avoided nowadays. There are numerous new nicer and much better places to visit in Stockholm. I think mainly older people and maybe tourists go there today.

      @@herrbonk3635 Regarding Vetekatten, I think it just got too commercialized. They used to do more refined things like high level chocolates. They still have some but nowhere mere the old days when Richard Bingham ran the pralines. About the elderly, I don’t necessarily have too much against them apart from the fact that they tend to fill the place and never leave. On the other hand the same goes for many youngsters. I was more referring to that older ones still go there for sentimental reasons. It’s still a good place but not at the level it used to be. Just my opinion.

      @@_TheRealGodI see. However, too commercialized (or too american styled, or too hipster styled) is the feeling I get by most places in Stockholm these days. It's similar here in Uppsala btw, with a few exceptions.

    Traditionally "Hetvägg" is how you eat a Semla that is a few days old and dry! You simply soften it in some hot milk. In my opinion a diskusting way to eat it. I rather throw it out and buy a fresh one😁
