Floating ecosystems are an innovative response to the nature and climate crises. The are floating islands packed with plants that can be installed along the edge of bodies of water, where nature would otherwise be missing. They provide a home for nature, improve the area for local residents and help to reduce the impacts of climate change.
Josh Pridding joined Groundwork on the Revitalising our Estuaries project as a volunteer at the end of his marine biology degree.
In July 2022 Josh was one of the volunteers that helped Groundwork to install a first of its kind tidal floating ecosystem along the Newcastle Quayside. His hard work and the technical knowledge he had from his degree impressed Biomatrix, the manufacturers of the floating ecosystem, so much that they offered him a permanent job. He’s now working for them installing floating ecosystems across the UK.
