TIP: at 12:05 where you've made the water dryness it says *+ Soil drying rate* and that is a bad thing, but the way you've made it say "+" it looks like a pro and not a con, so to combat that I'd suggest, instead of for example, saying "+20% Soil Dryness" I think it should say "-20% Soil Humidity" that way it shows that it is a good thing being decreased, (like all the other percentages) instead of a bad thing being increased, this is just those little quality of life changes that make the biggest difference

I just wanted to take this time to comment and tell you how amazing it is to see how far you’ve come. I first found you when I was interested in game programming and found your OpenGL game engine tutorials (that long ago), and I was so happy that I finally found a CZcamsr who was actually good at explaining what they were doing, wouldn’t just copy and paste code (within reason), and was very clear. It is amazing how far you’ve come since then. I had Java experience at the time but your tutorials helped me immensely with Java and programming in general.
I also admire you for how much of a role model you are are a programmer. While you program very large projects, you also make time to go for walks/runs, make healthy meals, grow plants, etc. It is an impressive work life balance that I aspire to every day. Bravo. You are definitely someone I respect and many others should as well.

    Great video as always.
As someone who is colorblind, I can see myself having a really hard time differentiating the different types of compost.
The only solution I can think of is changing the texture depending on which compost you are using, rather than the color. It’s obviously not a great solution considering it would take more work.
In any case, great video and the game is coming along nicely

    • @ThinMatrix

There's definitely going to be UI to tell you the compost type anyway (like when you click on the compost bin to see its info or mouse-over the bucket icon) but I'll try and add more visual differences as well!

Happy to see you having progress! A technical note: you could use a 3D texture (as opposed to a 2D array texture) with linear filtering for the compost image and use the compost amount directly as the 3rd texture coordinate, this way the blending will all be done by the fixed-function capabilities of the GPU.

    Just a suggestion:
You should make it so that every tile starts off with a “Natural Soil Quality.” This would be generated by a noise map. Now, as a plant grows on a tile, the non-natural soil quality deteriorates. You could still increase the non-natural soil quality with compost. OR, if you go long enough without planting a crop on that tile, it will naturally progress towards its “Natural Soil Quality.” This property would be unchanging, and based on the tile and not the crop.
I hope you understood that, I’m not the best at explaining things.

    • @imBlueToo

I have watched CZcams videos of people buying an old apartment blocks tearing out concrete and replacing with permaculture/self sustaining community gardens. So would be similar to your city building game in entering a small town and slowly helping/buying up and developing the rundown city through creating gardens for each specific properties need. Have a cool map showing the city changing from roads/concrete to gardens.

8:38 SUCH an elegant and smart solution to this problme of indicating compost types.I love it!It makes practical sense too, leaving the bag near the compost heap.Although that suggests the bag still has compost left in it hmmm, maybe you can make it so clicking on the bag next to the compost heap allows you to fill that heap if the bag is not empty(and maybe remove the bag after you've used all your available compost bags?Sounds like its gonna be messy to implement...)

The compost system is very well designed and implemented! Great job at making so much progress on it in just 3 days!
My only suggestion is to try to vary the different compost types visually using more than just color. This is for accessibility, since Colorblind people may find it difficult to distinguish green, red, and purple. I'd recommend using a combination of colors that can be distinguished even with colorblindness, or adding a symbol/ texture that distinguishes the different compost types easier when presented in the game.
It's been fascinating watching your continued progress. Good luck and keep at it!

1:52 This is a really neat technique to add texture detail to any natural floor, as it helps solving the issue of looking too flat and avoid patterns that often plague regular texture mapping.
On a similar note, a trick to help define the compost quantity on each tile could be as simple as changing each texture's opacity value, though it would probably be more expensive rendering-wise.

Great video as usual. Always looking forward to seeing your progress. If I may have some suggestions, I would personally like to have tools in some kind of hotbar (ideally with hotkeys), so you could easily switch between them. So far it looks very cumbersome to always be going into the inventory and switching them by mouse. Or maybe in the case of the well and compost, you could get rid of the bucket and watering can completely (to ease micromanagement) and implement something like right-clicking the compost to enable fertilizing function. But that's just something that crossed my mind, I really like what you created, the low poly and clean look are very pleasant and calming. Good luck in your endeavour.

One way to get even more fluid animation into the compost is to use a single heightmap/distance field, and then use a "t" value to pick a slice from this heightmap to alpha clip with, for instance using the "step" function in shader code. To generate the heightmap, you can create a 1x1x1 heap-like shape in Blender and render it from above using a shader that outputs the position Z componen (or you can just draw it in Gimp).

I don't know if that would fit, but when I saw the quick dry out from the compost I had the idea that you could maybe add something like a sprinkler into the game that you can place as an object which automatically waters nearby fields and plats. This concept could be expanded and allow for much more automation whith the game.

you can add a toggle (later in the development) that pressed, indicates the compost types by making a colored border around each crop plot. just a suggestion.

Maybe you could make your own compost by putting harvested crops in the bin and every different plant has effects and you can add like 4 crops in 1 bin so you can make different combinations and make your own compost

Nice progress. May i suggest nutrients to add after planted (different plants actually need different amount of Nitrogen Potassium and Phosphorous). Could be a cool mechanic there and it goes well with your diffrent types of compost concept. Anyways great job as usual, really enjoying Equilinox btw.

Something to keep in mind with the color, adding some distinct shapes in the compost texture along with color will help people who are color blind

    really awesome video.
i have just one nitpick. the icons for the items are kinda flat. this is because, in blender, when rendering the icon, you use the standard blender lighting environment. maybe consider using an HDRI for those renders. or maybe even just a more saturated solid environment.

Hi! I love your videos, and you inspire me to make games of my own. I was wondering if you could answer a couple questions for me. (It's a school project)
    1. What sort of programming background did you have? (Education, etc...)
    2. What made you decide to become a software engineer, and has that affected the things you create?
    3. What tips do you have for staying motivated?
Thanks if you decide to answer these, and if not, still thanks for making these amazing videos!
