  • Randy Newberg, Hunter gets to test a lot of products for a lot of companies. In this video Randy talks about the new scope he received from Leupold, a VX-5HD in a 3-15x44mm.
    Find it here: amzn.to/2NLZFiG
    This new scope has a High-Definition (HD) optical system for sharp clarity, and the Twilight Max™ Light Management System for great low-light performance, giving a visible advantage at dawn and dusk. Models with CDS-ZL2 (Custom Dial System ZeroLock 2) elevation dial locks in place so it cannot be inadvertently rotated off zero. A mere press of the button, which also acts as a revolution indicator, will allow the user to dial up two turns of elevation, if necessary. Models with covered popup elevation and windage dials provide fast and accurate sight-in and easy rezero. All VX-5HD CDS-ZL2 riflescopes include one free Custom Ballistic Dial with purchase. All VX-5HD scopes have Guard-ion lens coatings that shed water, dirt, and fingerprints.
    In the next video we will mount and bore sight this scope, then follow with a video of taking it to the range and finding our zero. After finding zero we will test the CDS dials for range and start subjecting the scope to real life conditions of hiking with it attached to a pack, bouncing around in a truck, and other things that will prevent movement of the POI once we start hunting.

    I installed this optic on a crossman 760 air rifle.I have now shot the riffle around 500 times during target/plinking practice, and the czcams.com/users/postUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope has done well.With this optic, I have neutralized around 30 pigeons that were invading one of my buildings.For my short range air rifle, I will continue to use this scope, but will be upgrading to a more powerful scope, when I buy a more powerful air rifle, in order to shoot at longer distance.For the money I have spent, this scope has truly been a great buy.

    you went over everything, unless I missed it, the gasket for windage cover, bought 5HD, take it home, gasket pops out when windage cover is off, barley tightened the windage cover and the gasket is so soft it stretches the gasket wider than winadge cover so it never makes a seal. Emailed luepold they said they would send another, in the mean time went back to shop and saw 2 5HDs on display same problem, every other model in their display have gaskets that are secured, and when the shop dude tried to pull them up he couldn't. Only the 5HDs are screwed up, how is your 5HD windage gasket? Firmly attached, or falling off and stretched?

    This scope is very interesting. This combination of lightness, short length, field of view and side focus is hard to beat.
    Not sure if it has been covered in the comments. But 2800fps for a 165gr bullet in the .308 must be on the top end.
    My calculation says, you need handloads with Hodgdon CFE223 to get in that velocity range.
    Cheers and happy Chtistmas 😊

    Hi Randy. Have you previously covered windage adjustments when shooting 300 yards and over? Do you adjust your scope knobs or prefer a hold over of some sort?
    Thanks. Saving cash for the scope. Should have it two months before next season.

    • @arttrumbo9496
      @arttrumbo9496 Před 4 lety +1

      I'm not Randy, but I have a little long range shooting experience. Personally, I prefer to hold over for wind. The reason for that is because the wind can change quickly and unexpectedly. By holding rather than dialing, I have a better chance of getting my shot off before the wind shifts. There are people out there that dial, but holding is better, IMHO.

      I am going to agree with you. The VX5 will do what I need. The windage knob isn’t as good as the VX6, but I don’t expect to actually dial for wind anyway.

    Happy 1st day of summer, Randy! We’re one more season closer to elk and deer hunting. Question: I’m very interested in this VX5HD to top off my new Tikka T3x SuperLite 7mm Rem Mag. From what I have researched, the 7mm begs for distance, but I’m a hunter, not a 1000+ yard target shooter. With that said, if I have this scope, will 15x power suffice for a situation where I may need to make a 600-1000 yard shot across a canyon or in an open plain scenario where I’d have to play the wind as it’s blowing from the animal to me and I’m in its visual as well? Are you still using this scope? How did it hold up in the rigors of the field? Also why did you choose the duplex reticle over others? I’m leaning toward the Wind-Plex. I wish there was an identity scope but had an 18x option with the same weight (18-20oz) saving. Thanks for all you do!

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  Před 6 lety +3

      Still using it. Works flawlessly. As for shots at the distances you mention, "doping the wind" requires a lot of practice and a lot of knowledge about your bullet characteristics and environmental conditions. That said, a 15X is enough to shoot at those ranges, but a scope itself will not be the only part of that equation. Best of luck this season.

      Randy Newberg, Hunter My scope came in yesterday, but I have a problem - Leupold advertises their new “Backcountry 2-piece 30mm Medium” for the Tikka T3x, yet I can’t find them ANYWHERE! I like that they’re aluminum (lightweight and strong), bases and lower ring are 1 solid part, and the screw on instead of clamp the rail. Do you have a suggestion as an alternative? What rings did you choose? Thanks!

  • @ActinOut
    @ActinOut Před rokem

    I just bought the impact 29 moa in this scope and it sucks! The reticle is too fine to have any usefulness. It's about the equivalent of a first focal plane at the lowest power; however, with the ffp, it grows in size as one increases the power and so becomes more visible. Unfortunately this is a second focal plane, so the reticle stays the same at all levels, rendering it essentially useless. If you are looking for a scope to use for long range shooting and hunting, I'd recommend a pass on this one. Trying to look at something in the trees and the reticle entirely dissappears. But it's not that visible, even not in the trees.

      Actually they are “sourced” China, Japan, and Europe. Most all scope manufacturers source their glass. Some of the best glass is from Japan. There is not a manufacturer of optical glass in the US that can supply the quantity that scope manufacturers demand . Remember it’s just the raw glass, Leupold grinds and coats their optics with their proprietary coatings, which is the most important process in regards to optical quality .

    Randy i am looking at either the 2-10X by 42mm or the 3-15X by 56mm. I do the majority of my hunting on the east coast at distances less than 200 yards, but i do go on an elk hunt every year out west. I like the 56mm with the fire dot for the low light conditions but I like the 2-10X for the weight savings for those long hikes out west where every ounce counts. What would be your recommendations for me?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  Před 6 lety

      I have a 2-10x on one of my rifles and I use it out west. I have it for the exact reasons you mention, weight. At 10x, this scope is amazing. If weight is a thought, 2-10x is a great option.

      Depending on the ammo you use. Most over the counter ammo is lethal out to 400 yards. Hornady ELD-X a couple of hundred yards further.
      The turret on mine is customized for .22-250 and the turret can be adjusted two full rotations so out to 900 yards. Can I effectively use a .22-250 out to that distance? Its effective our to 500 yards and a little more.
      Too many variables; spin drift, wind drift, gravity, coriolis effect, etc.
      The only reason I bought the scope was the discounted price as sales incentive when I worked at my LGS.
      I got two Swarovaki scopes Z3 and Z5, one Zeiss V4 scope and one pair of Zeiss binoculars for free.
      That said my longest shot was about 350 - 375 yards and it's not likely that I'll use the full capabilities of any of scopes I have.

I wanted to ask about the CDS system. I have shot 150 grain 308 for the last few years on West Texas mule deer. I like the 150 and am going to get E tips. I noticed on dial selection I have to use 150 or 165 specific when I buy the custom dial. I would prefer to use 150 for deer and up to 165 for elk. Is there a huge difference here or am I overthinking this? Have you shot an elk with 150 E tips? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I hope taxes aren’t too time consuming this year so you can get in some Spring scouting.

    Will Leopold's make that custom cap for anyone who knows there specs or is that a Randy Newberg exclusive? If the general public can, what's the process taken to order one to your own personal specs? I load my own rounds more out of habit and upbringing. I've got my special blend and it would be nice to have that option. Currently I'm the, "Two inches above his back" guy. Spend all that time and effort to essentially guess during crunch time.

      Yes, if you buy a CDS model scope from Leupold it will come with the ability to order a dial for your loads. Not a "Randy Newberg exclusive."

      do you get this even if you buy it via a gun store vs direct from leupold?

      @@timmoore6055 I can confirm. Since I made that comment I bought one, got the custom dial and dropped a public land elk in Wyoming at 380 yards with it. 10/10 would buy again.

      @Reel-Lentless I'm sure he's a nice guy, loves his family and treats everyone with respect.....but does he receive money or free equipment from Leupold?
