- Randy Newberg, Hunter gets to test a lot of products for a lot of companies. In this video Randy talks about the new scope he received from Leupold, a VX-5HD in a 3-15x44mm.
Find it here: amzn.to/2NLZFiG
This new scope has a High-Definition (HD) optical system for sharp clarity, and the Twilight Max™ Light Management System for great low-light performance, giving a visible advantage at dawn and dusk. Models with CDS-ZL2 (Custom Dial System ZeroLock 2) elevation dial locks in place so it cannot be inadvertently rotated off zero. A mere press of the button, which also acts as a revolution indicator, will allow the user to dial up two turns of elevation, if necessary. Models with covered popup elevation and windage dials provide fast and accurate sight-in and easy rezero. All VX-5HD CDS-ZL2 riflescopes include one free Custom Ballistic Dial with purchase. All VX-5HD scopes have Guard-ion lens coatings that shed water, dirt, and fingerprints.
In the next video we will mount and bore sight this scope, then follow with a video of taking it to the range and finding our zero. After finding zero we will test the CDS dials for range and start subjecting the scope to real life conditions of hiking with it attached to a pack, bouncing around in a truck, and other things that will prevent movement of the POI once we start hunting.

I installed this optic on a crossman 760 air rifle.I have now shot the riffle around 500 times during target/plinking practice, and the czcams.com/users/postUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope has done well. With this optic, I have neutralized around 30 pigeons that were invading one of my buildings. For my short range air rifle, I will continue to use this scope, but will be upgrading to a more powerful scope, when I buy a more powerful air rifle, in order to shoot at longer distance. For the money I have spent, this scope has truly been a great buy.
Almost forgot. As always, our family thoroughly enjoys every new video you put out. We've even gotten used to patiently waiting for the text message on Wednesday's so we can sit out on the porch and listen to your podcasts. Thank you for all you and your crew do for us.
That's great to hear. Thanks for following along.
I got my 3-15x44 Friday, put it on the win mag and got it zeroed. Ordered my turret this morning.. the fire dot is amazing! I'll be ready for New Mexico come October. Thanks for all the info you provide very down to earth 👍🏻
Thanks for watching.
Leupold VX 5 HD is my dream scope
found a good deal on one of these, and love it so much. if I need another rifle one day, im buying another and have no problem paying full price
Nice review of my Christmas present ... no need to wrap it up before sending it to me!
Thanks for the review. Set on a VX-5, but undecided on 2-10 vs 3-15. Would be used on a .308 for elk and deer in eastern Oregon.
What did you go with?
Great video, I just learned another useful bit of information from Randy "PHD". (Professional Hunting Dude)
That's too funny. Glad you find it useful.
Nice video sir thank you.
He said Beaverton Oregon lol
Picking one up for my 6.5CM. Can't wait to get it mounted and on some speed goats in Wyoming next month!!!
Good luck with it.
Just ordered VX5HD 1-5x24 for my Sig Cross 308 👍👍🇨🇦
you went over everything, unless I missed it, the gasket for windage cover, bought 5HD, take it home, gasket pops out when windage cover is off, barley tightened the windage cover and the gasket is so soft it stretches the gasket wider than winadge cover so it never makes a seal. Emailed luepold they said they would send another, in the mean time went back to shop and saw 2 5HDs on display same problem, every other model in their display have gaskets that are secured, and when the shop dude tried to pull them up he couldn't. Only the 5HDs are screwed up, how is your 5HD windage gasket? Firmly attached, or falling off and stretched?
This scope is very interesting. This combination of lightness, short length, field of view and side focus is hard to beat.
Not sure if it has been covered in the comments. But 2800fps for a 165gr bullet in the .308 must be on the top end.
My calculation says, you need handloads with Hodgdon CFE223 to get in that velocity range.
Cheers and happy Chtistmas 😊
I just got this scope today though mine has the wind plex reticle. It's mounted on a Remington 700 SPS Varmint 22-250 w/26" barrel with Talley Manufacturing mounts holding everything together.
Hi Randy. Have you previously covered windage adjustments when shooting 300 yards and over? Do you adjust your scope knobs or prefer a hold over of some sort?
Thanks. Saving cash for the scope. Should have it two months before next season.
I'm not Randy, but I have a little long range shooting experience. Personally, I prefer to hold over for wind. The reason for that is because the wind can change quickly and unexpectedly. By holding rather than dialing, I have a better chance of getting my shot off before the wind shifts. There are people out there that dial, but holding is better, IMHO.
Art Trumbo
I am going to agree with you. The VX5 will do what I need. The windage knob isn’t as good as the VX6, but I don’t expect to actually dial for wind anyway.
Have a good “1”
I like Leupolds I just haven’t been able to afford anything better than the vx3i scope I stuck a 3-10 vx3i on my Winchester Model 70 270 win I did get it with boon and Crockett retical
Happy 1st day of summer, Randy! We’re one more season closer to elk and deer hunting. Question: I’m very interested in this VX5HD to top off my new Tikka T3x SuperLite 7mm Rem Mag. From what I have researched, the 7mm begs for distance, but I’m a hunter, not a 1000+ yard target shooter. With that said, if I have this scope, will 15x power suffice for a situation where I may need to make a 600-1000 yard shot across a canyon or in an open plain scenario where I’d have to play the wind as it’s blowing from the animal to me and I’m in its visual as well? Are you still using this scope? How did it hold up in the rigors of the field? Also why did you choose the duplex reticle over others? I’m leaning toward the Wind-Plex. I wish there was an identity scope but had an 18x option with the same weight (18-20oz) saving. Thanks for all you do!
Still using it. Works flawlessly. As for shots at the distances you mention, "doping the wind" requires a lot of practice and a lot of knowledge about your bullet characteristics and environmental conditions. That said, a 15X is enough to shoot at those ranges, but a scope itself will not be the only part of that equation. Best of luck this season.
Randy Newberg, Hunter My scope came in yesterday, but I have a problem - Leupold advertises their new “Backcountry 2-piece 30mm Medium” for the Tikka T3x, yet I can’t find them ANYWHERE! I like that they’re aluminum (lightweight and strong), bases and lower ring are 1 solid part, and the screw on instead of clamp the rail. Do you have a suggestion as an alternative? What rings did you choose? Thanks!
I wish the windage was like the CDS dial.
Nice video
Randy, How did you know how high the scope height would be for your CDS calculation before you mounted it on your rifle. I am looking to send out the info for my .300 wby but I am still in the waiting period in CA to receive my rifle. I imagining it will be at around 1.5 inch since I purchased Lewpold rings (high) and its the same scope as above. Just want to make sure I get my CDS dial before my hunting trip. Thanks!
Thanks for the video is the vx 6 worth the extra money im between the vx 5 and vx 6?
So I gotta ask Randy. With the advances in rifles, ammo, optics and ballistic software, do you still hold true to you're rule of not taking animals over 350 yards? Just curious. Thanks Randy
Yup. I do a lot of shooting at much longer ranges, but for hunting ranges, I keep it pretty close.
What length barrel were you getting 2800 fps out of!?
How does it compare to last year's VX-6? This is likely that what I am going to put on my rifle this year. I am a fan of the windplex and the Vx-6 HD does not come with the windplex.
It is very close, but the VX-6HD has a few features that make it one notch higher.
Does anyone know where this glass is made ? What type of glass ? What are the specs on the glass such as light transmission ? I cannot believe this information isn’t provided by leupold on a scope of this price .
Randy, what happens to the scopes you've been using since Leupold sends you new samples to use and shoot? Sure would be nice if there was a way to sell these to hunters at a discount. I love their products but some of us have more restrictive budgets.
Hey Randy have you ever used the Boone and cricket reticle? What are your thoughts on it?
They charge $149.95 for the front lens cap (not included) and $65 for the eyepiece cover (not included), $189.00 for the throw lever (not included), $60.00 for a sunshade (not included) and $25.00 for a scope shroud (not included). All stuff other scopes (like Bushnell) at this price point include. How is this not highway robbery?
Maga Man paying for the logo
Great video! You mentioned making a video of you mounting and sighting in the scope. Is that video out yet? If so, could you provide the link? I would love to hear some of your thoughts on the scope after shooting it.
I just purchased the same scope with the windplex reticle (Got a great deal at gun broker for $695). Now I just have to save enough money for the gun I plan on putting under the scope! haha
Thanks!
Randy, I will be making my purchase soon. I am curious why the VX5 and not the VX6??
Just a function of features I need or don't need. Both are excellent.
I’d need a second job to get this scope lol
$15*40 hrs = $600 + OT $22.50*10 hrs = $600 + $225 = $825 = shiny new scope. Well, maybe another few hours for taxes.
Worth the effort. Get to work!
What model of 5HD is that? I mean a firedot or duplex.
How are you liking the scope so far?
I have considered getting a CDS and am curious does the dial actually have yardage marks (200, 300, etc.) or do you need to translate a different number (MOA) to the desired yardage? I have been using the B&C reticle on my VX3 and find it pretty effective.
They have yardage marks at every 10 yards.
Where did you find this exact document at 5:56?
I just bought the impact 29 moa in this scope and it sucks! The reticle is too fine to have any usefulness. It's about the equivalent of a first focal plane at the lowest power; however, with the ffp, it grows in size as one increases the power and so becomes more visible. Unfortunately this is a second focal plane, so the reticle stays the same at all levels, rendering it essentially useless. If you are looking for a scope to use for long range shooting and hunting, I'd recommend a pass on this one. Trying to look at something in the trees and the reticle entirely dissappears. But it's not that visible, even not in the trees.
The most important part which are the lenses are made in Japan. They are high quality but I don't like when it's advertised as being made in the USA. It is designed and assembled in the US but the lenses are made in Japan.
Dbr24venom
Actually they are “sourced” China, Japan, and Europe. Most all scope manufacturers source their glass. Some of the best glass is from Japan. There is not a manufacturer of optical glass in the US that can supply the quantity that scope manufacturers demand . Remember it’s just the raw glass, Leupold grinds and coats their optics with their proprietary coatings, which is the most important process in regards to optical quality .
What reticle does Randy Newberg use
Randy i am looking at either the 2-10X by 42mm or the 3-15X by 56mm. I do the majority of my hunting on the east coast at distances less than 200 yards, but i do go on an elk hunt every year out west. I like the 56mm with the fire dot for the low light conditions but I like the 2-10X for the weight savings for those long hikes out west where every ounce counts. What would be your recommendations for me?
I have a 2-10x on one of my rifles and I use it out west. I have it for the exact reasons you mention, weight. At 10x, this scope is amazing. If weight is a thought, 2-10x is a great option.
Hey bud, someone told me in a one inch tube no need to go to 50mm because you can only get just so much light through 1 inch, so i would imagine with a 30mm tube 50mm would be it for light. Check with someone who knows what im trying to say, not sure that is correct info
Where did you go o look at that pdf.
How does tempature affect the cds? Say if I had the turret for -15 c but its -25 that day?
Depends on many other factors. I download "Dope" about my loads and how each of them are affected by changes in altitude and temperature, so if there is a large variance from what my dials are set for, I can know what the different will be.
Ok so I live in Florida get my zero then send leupold my ammo and area I intend to hunt In Colorado and get a dial ?
The folks there on the other end of the phone will ask a bunch of questions; altitude will be important. Been a while since I got my last dial, but boy howdy do they work! I'm using a 3Xi and love it!
Can you buy this for VX-2's?
Nope. VX-2 has been replaced by the VX-Freedom.
Just went to order a Alpine Mountain Rifle from Howa really liked the light weight and found they have been continued. Any idea why. Keep hunting
Hard to keep the stocks in supply. They have some new stuff coming in the next year that will be a great replacement for the lightweight mountain rifle.
Thanks for the reply. Howa rifles have a great reputation for accuracy and value for money in Australia but everyone has told me the weight will be an issue. I was looking at the Mauser M18 but will wait and see what the new Howa line looks like in comparison.
how is the turrets accuracy holding up?
Perfectly.
vn. one more question how good is the glass ? how far out can you see say .223 holes on paper?
Glass is excellent. I've never tried to test how far I can see .223 holes on paper, as it is mounted in a .308 Win.
How did you come up with your elevation for the cds?
Based on the places I am most likely to hunt elk.
Getti g one for 6.5 creedmore thanks for the video
I'm thinking of doing the same thing what rings are you going with?
@@rauls6481 I'm using a teir one mount
Hi Randy, Can't seem to find any info on parallax. How far down does it go? Thanks, Chris
This goes to infinity.
I'm sorry Randy, I meant how close 25 or 50 yds?
Thank again, Chris
Not sure. I'll look.
What is effective range for this scope? Just got one myself, this is my first Leupold scope.
Way farther than most can shoot. Get with CDS dial and it goes around twice..so depending on your caliber/load etc easily out to 1000 yds. My vx2 with one turn cds goes out to 600 on a fairly slow /06
Depending on the ammo you use. Most over the counter ammo is lethal out to 400 yards. Hornady ELD-X a couple of hundred yards further.
The turret on mine is customized for .22-250 and the turret can be adjusted two full rotations so out to 900 yards. Can I effectively use a .22-250 out to that distance? Its effective our to 500 yards and a little more.
Too many variables; spin drift, wind drift, gravity, coriolis effect, etc.
The only reason I bought the scope was the discounted price as sales incentive when I worked at my LGS.
I got two Swarovaki scopes Z3 and Z5, one Zeiss V4 scope and one pair of Zeiss binoculars for free.
That said my longest shot was about 350 - 375 yards and it's not likely that I'll use the full capabilities of any of scopes I have.
Hi randy. Are your vx-3i scopes (3.5 - 10× ) or ( 4.5 - 14×) my hunting ranges are also 400 yards and below. Looking for my new weatherby .270 and cant decide. I would appreciate your opinion. Love all the videos.
I have one of each. They works fine for ranges under 400 yards. If possible, and weight is not an issue, go with the 4.5-14X and get a bigger objective lens. You will like it for the longer end of the ranges you mention.
is the glass on all the vx scopes the same quality 3,5,or6
How much cost, this rifle scope.
Retails for around $900
Randy I can’t think you enough your content. I’m hoping to go on my first elk hunt this fall. I work in financial services and thought it was neat you work in accounting. I wanted to ask about the CDS system. I have shot 150 grain 308 for the last few years on West Texas mule deer. I like the 150 and am going to get E tips. I noticed on dial selection I have to use 150 or 165 specific when I buy the custom dial. I would prefer to use 150 for deer and up to 165 for elk. Is there a huge difference here or am I overthinking this? Have you shot an elk with 150 E tips? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I hope taxes aren’t too time consuming this year so you can get in some Spring scouting.
-Kyle
I've not shot 150 E-tips. I shoot 168 E-tips for whatever I am hunting.
Thanks Randy really appreciate it. Grabbing some today.
How many yards can that scope go out too?
I think it goes to 1,800, far, far, beyond what I would ever shoot. My hunting distances are 400 yards and under.
Wow okay thank you! I've been eying this scope for a while. I hunt in CA most shots are 100-200yrds only but there are open ridges that goes out to 1k yards. Thanks for replying
What do you think about the VX 6HD?
Love it. I have two of them.
Send me one bud PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@Fresh_Tracks It would be awesome to have a Leupold scope. You should give one away:)
Is the 6HD twice as good as the 5HD (it costs almost twice as much)? I doubt it... This scope seems to hit the perfect price-performance spot to me.
Will Leopold's make that custom cap for anyone who knows there specs or is that a Randy Newberg exclusive? If the general public can, what's the process taken to order one to your own personal specs? I load my own rounds more out of habit and upbringing. I've got my special blend and it would be nice to have that option. Currently I'm the, "Two inches above his back" guy. Spend all that time and effort to essentially guess during crunch time.
Yes, if you buy a CDS model scope from Leupold it will come with the ability to order a dial for your loads. Not a "Randy Newberg exclusive."
do you get this even if you buy it via a gun store vs direct from leupold?
@@kingofthesofas Yes. And you phone them and they ask a bunch of questions.
@@timmoore6055 I can confirm. Since I made that comment I bought one, got the custom dial and dropped a public land elk in Wyoming at 380 yards with it. 10/10 would buy again.
@@kingofthesofas Did you zero-in at 100 yards or 200 yards?
If you don't want the scope that you took off I'll take it! hahaha!
Already spoken for. Sorry.
Dang. Well keep me in mind for when you get another new one!
Does Randy Newberg do anything except paid infomercials?
@Reel-Lentless I'm sure he's a nice guy, loves his family and treats everyone with respect.....but does he receive money or free equipment from Leupold?
@Reel-Lentless Then his reviews are no more than infomercials.
