- Highs and Lows of our first month sailing
Welcome back to Sailing NV, where we’re refitting and Open 60 race boat. After a 2 years on the hard in Fiji, we’re finally back in the water and transiting to life afloat once more… but the refit isn’t entirely over so this week we take you with us through the highs and lows of our first few weeks back on the water, taking you to the top of our nearly 30 metre carbon mast and down to the bottom of our nearly 5 metre keel as we finally find ourselves anchored in crystal clear water once again for the first time in 2 years!

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

Yeah he’s a pretty happy chappy ☺️
@@SailingNV , have been Binge watching to catch up , half way through
@@geofferyrobertson6608 haha great, nice to have you onboard 😊
BIG boats for the WIN!
🍻
It's just lovely to listen to the italian accent.
Yay glad to hear this :)
I have followed you from the beginning, but I guess this is where to beginning starts. Absolutely love you guys. Your choices are excitingly outside the box. Your multicultural family is a joy to watch and I look forward to the upcoming adventures. Great video and what a beauty she is underway. Cheers guys and thank you for sharing your journey. The careful placement and discussion of Buddha on the mast……what a touching backstory ❤. I wish you all the best and success with the channel and your journey. You guys are truly the example of living your best life😊
Thanks a lot for such nice words and for joining us on the journey! We really appreciate reading messages like this, thanks for taking the time to write it :) cheers 🍻
Great humor. Great multi tasking. Tend to Nemo, manage dual halyards, dodge falling fore stays and sea snakes…. How dare you not catch that rigger’s bag?! Pay attention, Jo!! From what I’ve seen of Nemo he’ll be at the mast head within a year if you blink😘
Hahaha great comment thanks John! Thanks for watching, hope we see you again soon xxx
I just love seeing that old Matador chute. Happy to see you guys enjoying the boat in the water.
Cheers Steve 👍🏻 yeah it’s good to see the bull fly :)
There are few youtubers that I would actually trust enough to go on their boat. I'd go on this guy's boat.
Thanks for this super nice comment, you’re welcome anytime!
Looking forward to your next video 😊😊😊😊
Cheers James 🍻
Looking forward to see NV blasting across the sea under full gear! This boat will be an incredible rocket compared to all other cruisers. A race between you and the new trimaran of Sailing La Vagabonde would be interesting! Let´s see if the compromise in living comfort will be made up by her sailing properties in the long run.
Haha yeah a CZcams channel regatta! Thanks for the nice comment Matthias :)
NV looks beautiful on the water. What a great job you’ve done. We used to often run aground with a swinging keel if we weren’t paying attention, you will appreciate your draft across oceans and at anchor. Thank you for letting us watch your progress.
Thanks a lot Hedley for the nice words :)
Nice to hear from you as always Hedley :) and yes we’ve already appreciated the keel at anchor here 👍🏻
Love your project. Its an awesome boat! Sure the keel makes coastal navigation slightly more challenging but sailing will be a lot of fun.
Cheers Timo (great name 😉), we totally agree 👍🏻
Great paint job! Love the big bulb. Good on you for not being conventional but going for what you want in a sailing home! Not everyone fits in the same box!! Oh and love the Budda to the top of the mast too, and thanks for the back story on it. I look forward to the next update 👏👏👏
Thanks Aaron - great to hear from you! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
great adventure and I love to watch your sailing and repair stuff. I hope some day I can do the same
Cheers Koos! We hope you can too :)
Great video guys, I miss you too. Keep up the great work and the positive forward momentum. I can't wait to join you again with Cheryl and sail once again on your amazing vessel.
Cheers Ken, come back sooooooon!!!
Yay!
🍻
One day a dream video might be watching NV sail against The Duracell Project ... two of the Mustangs of the Oceans.
THAT would be awesome!!! 👍🏻👍🏻 ⛵️ ⛵️🤩🤩
boat looks amazing! Glad your finally floating again! every sailing channel seems to have at least one who goes through phones fairly regularly and yet i've seen no-one with a rugged phone at all. i swear by my rugged blackview have run it over dropped in hot tub, hit with the hammer accidentally chucked down stairs, all sorts of ridiculous stuff,
Haha wow thanks for the tip will def have a look for one of those! Our choice is a bit limited in Fiji…The camera quality is also important for us as it’s what we do most of our Filming with.
I totally get why you bought NV and are fully aware of her limitations. having such a deep draft will be a bit scary for a while but it will make better navigators of you both and you will become very connected to NV and what you can do with her. You will know your boat better than most and it will become second nature to cruise around island sand banks reefs etc. People panic when they have 3m under their keel but I used to be regularly down to inches where it was sand or mud and often had a muddy cloud appear from astern. It's all going to be such bloody fun and with both of you being very experienced sailors you know your own limitations although I suspect they will be pushed beyond the max LOL.
Hey Ian thanks for the nice comment, we totally agree! :)
idoli!!!!!!
Grazie Lo!
Very nice boat, fair winds
Cheers Eric 🍻
Tutto si fa, basta volerlo!!!
Amazing video guys 👍
Grazie 😊
è bella da commuoversi
Ma che gentile grazie e mille
Just subscribed. Mentally I have renamed the boat the "John Holmes" of the sea.
Hahaha love it, cheers Peter 🍻
This boat is significantly more stable then shortkeeled ones.
Totally agree, thanks for your comment :)
Count me in for a visit sailing with your family for few days in the future…
Welcome aboard 👍🏻
Loving the music in this episode (as per usual), especially the fiddle. Jo, are you familiar with Brittany Haas?
Great to see NV under sail again. Amazing that, with that bulb keel, she still tracks so well that you can balance her and sail close hauled with the helm lashed. My old boat would do that, but she had a full keel.
Love the buddha, 26 meters up! 😀
Hey Michael thanks so much for the introducing me to Brittany Hass, I hadn’t heard of her, but I’ve been listening to her ever since your comment! it’s exactly the kind of thing I love :) and yeah NV sails beautifully, very light on the helm
@@SailingNV So glad you like Brittany Haas. I have managed to see Hawktail live a couple of times and they were wonderful. You might also enjoy Brittany's sister, Natalie Haas, a Juilliard -trained cellist who also plays traditional music. There are CZcams videos of them playing "Dray and Dusty" and "Duck River" together.
Awesome thanks for all the tips! I used to play a lot of American old time stuff in sessions back home in the Uk, and love hearing them played so well by Brittany! Gives me someone to try to play along with out here in Fiji haha ;)
For Australia it will be hard but therefore your passages will be fun going 20knots.
You mean it will be hard because of the depth?
@@SailingNV exactly, we are on a catamaran and on most bar crossings you can't have a large draft.
I don't think you've fully realized how many harbors and anchorages are unavailable to you. It's a safety matter. I worry about chafe on those lines going into the mast.
The ferrules in the mast are main to be used with soft rigging (as is common on race boats like ours). Sure we will have to check regularly though. You are right we probably haven't fully realised how restricted we'll be, but it's not something we're particularly bothered about. Having spent many many years cruising already, we are quite content with what we've experienced and are happy not to be limited and to choose just a few countries and locations to visit.... and we're excited about the offshore sailing!
❤top❤
Cheers Max 🍻
Will the pivot system cope with shortening the fin and adding a larger bulb?
We don’t have pivot system and not keen because means needing a lot of engine
If the keel makes you happy that's all that really matters.
Cheers to that :) 🍻
👍👍👍👍
🙏
He was stretching his groin and you said he needs a good lick, lol sorry just very funny .
🤣🤦♀️
Don't listen to the armchair sailors. Anyone who says you have too much draft doesn't understand the first thing about stability and seaworthiness. They think heavy, shallow, long keel boats are the safest option but the reality could not be further away. Light, long, stiff boats with ample stability and speed are vastly more safe, especially in the hands of capable crew. Cheers,
Wow what a great comment, you explained it much better than we did! Thank you :)
Maybe it would be better if Timo didn't commentate rather let Joana do that and Timo do the manual stuff? Just an idea...
We’re trying this a bit ;)
Sportsman, Have you ever really thought about what you are saying when you entrust yourself to a lifeless statue, it can’t climb the mast can it? Therefore how can it protect you and your family? Can’t move to ‘get a better view’ as Jo pointed out to you.
No don’t put your trust in lifeless objects just because you have previously had your ears tickled and you have listened to what other people have said. This is useless. Think about your real creator of heaven and earth who only wants the best for you.
Read Isaiah 48: 17, 18 and Jeremiah 28: 11. Merci
Thanks will do
Maybe it's time to improve your italien/english, start by dropping all the 'e s ;-)
I've spent too much time with indian it support, they speak a terrible indlish that makes my head hurt.
Will try 👍🏻
@@SailingNV No, please don’t change the accent. Your channel is a new favourite of mine and you should own your accent just like you do. Keep it real and keep the amazing and vidjayos coming ❤.
@@jonasolsson5749 aw thanks Jonas 🙏 nice to hear :) … let’s be honest, i can’t really ever imagine timo to changing his accent hahaha ;)
