My experience with dyslexics is that they’re often the most brilliant among our children but we fail to notice because we want them to follow the traditional way of schooling and learning which stresses us. I suspect my daughter is ADHD with possibly some form of dyslexia. Last week she managed to get out of school grounds and now I homeschool her (School claimed no responsibility and blamed my 4yr old and her home-Ed ASD 6yr old brother who was in entirely the opposite direction). She still struggles with her shapes and written numbers/letters (Can add/subtract/count well and verbally break sounds down okay, but not the written ones). She has such a brilliant mind, but she really struggles with accessing it or showing it to others. Hopefully home Ed will help give her the flexibility to open that up more.
Is worth mentioning though that this video is basically just advertising a set to teach phonics which is done as basic standard in my country and has been for at least 10 years. 😅

to be fair waiting until you are ready worked for me. i dropped out of 8th grade and went on a reading binge and went from a beginning reader to the Robert Jordon's "Wheel of Time" in just over a year. My sister is also dyslexic and had a similar but less extreme experience around the same age. Just keep at it and keep the experience positive so that they stay motivated. So glad to see there are more resources.

He amazing to me and yet can not read or remember math and spelling is only@ 12% and now in 3rd grade at the end of the year. I have other men in my family that is the same. @@homeschoolgroundzero8300, not much other than expensive programs that are out of our budget and advice from other homeschool moms online, so I'm looking forward to finding the time to sit down and explore the program you suggested. He can read music notes and numbers incredibly well, so fortunately it's just reading and writing that have slowed him down. I did need to adjust my curriculum from a Classical approach to a relaxed Charlotte Mason approach. This helped immensely for his learning overall. He gave a talk in Primary yesterday and I thought he did really well, even if I did have to be up there with my finger under each word so he could maintain his focus.
@@afaith-filledhome6113 That’s a huge win! I never thought about it, but my daughter can also read music notes without any trouble. She does have a hard time with numbers and I haven’t found any tricks to overcome that, yet. I did hear that putting a transparent colored piece of plastic over the page helps the brain see the letters better. We’ve also done some cross body motions (like reaching the right hand to the left shoulder) which help, but she hates. It’s work, but we are making progress, and I do really love this program. I forgot to mention that she has them read little stories and illustrate them so they not only have to actually read the words, but they feel ownership of the story by the end. It’s pretty cool.
We tried several curriculums. This is the only one that has worked so far thanks for sharing or we would probably still be struggling.

Be careful when making the sound of (y) and other sounds not to add the extra (uh) sound to end- it can cause a lot of confusion when first decoding words and pronouncing the letters with the extra (uh) sound

I wish this had been around when my eldest was learning to read. She was diagnosed with severe dyslexia at the age of 7. She is nearly 17 now. My youngest is also is struggling with reading. He doesn't have the traits of dyslexia but i am going to try this with him as maybe it is the key we are looking for.
This was made for dyslexic learners, but I think it would probably work for any child who is struggling to understand letter sounds and our crazy English language. I wish you the best of luck!

Wow! This is so helpful!!!! I’m pulling my son out of a public school and homeschooling him. He suffers from dyslexia and is on the spectrum for autism. He’s very smart and is so far behind on reading. He’s currently in 4th grade but reads at a level 2. While I’m pulling him out for different reasons (more than 3!)…one is those is I feel he’s falling thru the cracks. I’m terrified but I feel I can help guide him further. You are a very good parent because you’re aware of his needs and taking steps to meet them. I’m so sorry he is falling through the cracks, that’s very disheartening. Special needs take a lot of effort and constant learning, but parents are so dedicated to finding a solution, it will definitely work out. You’ve got this.

Please don’t be stressed I’ve noticed the dyslexic children are the most brilliant it’s a gift from God but we fail to notice because traditional education wants them to be so. They delay in reading because they’re taking time to develop other creative parts of the brain. Pay attention to them and you would testify to that. Forget about the traditional schooling

I actually went with the All About Reading and All About Spelling curriculum. I downloaded this as extra information and it has a couple of things I can incorporate but don't be afraid to invest in curriculum too.
And while it's good it still isn't as good as the one I bought and it wouldn't be enough for my little learner

I hear you, it can be really frustrating trying to find something that works. We just did it about 10 minutes a day so she didn’t get too frustrated and worked our way through. I hope you and your son have a great experience with this! Also, lots and lots of reading stories to my daughter until she gained the skill of reading was super important so she wanted to read.
Thank you for this video. I have a 10 year old that I just pulled out of school and am starting homeschooling. I want to work in remedial but I’m hoping that this feels age appropriate for them.
The best thing I can suggest is to let your child watch a few videos. If they don’t feel talked down to, this program will work perfectly for them. Even if they do feel like it’s too young for them, I think it would be worth the effort to help them laugh that off and still learn from the lessons because I just haven’t found anything else that works this well to teach the basics of reading. The struggle is real. I think helping my dyslexic child know she’s really smart was almost as big a part of learning to read as learning her letters and sounds. I hope this works well with you guys.

Oh, I know that feeling. It’s terrible. But I promise you haven’t failed him. It’s crazy how much pressure we feel to accomplish things by a certain age. Nobody asks how old you were when you first walked, or swam, or started eating solids. Once we learn things we just zip forward and everything is great. Same thing with reading. The age is not really important. Once he has it, the world is his oyster, whatever age that happens at. You’re doing great, seriously.

If I’m understanding, you’re saying she can’t remember the sound the “S” makes. Try giving the S a tongue and a tail, turning it into a snake. Then let your granddaughter “hiss” as she traces the snake. Or you can put some salt in a cookie sheet and have her trace the S in the salt with her finger while saying S-S-S-Salt.
No, no she has no problem with the sound, it's writing it she can't grasp.
Oh, that’s quite normal. Kids often write a lot of letters and numbers backwards for quite a while. The number five and letter S can be quite tricky. I don’t worry about it too much. As they get older, they just naturally flip them around and figure it out on their own with practice.
I'm 17 and interested in education, found out a year ago I was possibly dislexic but it was told to me slightly vividly. But, all my life I did feel slightly out of place despite always trying my best, and I wish my mom was more opened to do something less traditional, but with my family's background and morals its hard to do that. And basically, I look forward to improve the education system, so that students don't struggle much as some do now with this old system.
That is a very worthy goal. I’m sure that even though you didn’t have exactly the education you wanted, your experience will prepare you to help others in a similar situation. Being dyslexic can be challenging, but it also means you are good at a lot of things others find difficult. You probably understand how things fit together and how to make things beautiful. You may be able to hear nuances in music or pick up on people’s moods based on audio cues. Many things that may seem normal to you probably come as a result of having dyslexia. I hope you are able to achieve your dreams and improve the education system.

I don’t know. He thinks reading must be hard because he’s watching his sister work so hard at it, but I think he’ll fly through it once he decides he wants to.

Vmuz3516 I’m so sorry, I know how overwhelming and even life changing that news is. Crying is the perfect way to process your new reality. But here’s the truth: this program took my child and many other children from a frustrating place of hopelessness to a powerful ability to decode words. If this program doesn’t work for you, there are others out there. Many many people have dyslexia and are working to provide tools to teach in a way that makes sense to the dyslexic brain. There is a solution and both you and your child are going to feel so much better when things start making sense. You’re doing an important job, even when it’s hard. Keep it up, you’re awesome!

Hi this programme sounds great, but can you recommend any programmes for other subjects please? I've finally got my daughter reading (she's 10 now, not diagnosed but pretty sure she is dyslexic) however any other subjects like writing and maths are pretty much impossible!! Writing is hard for several of my kids. The best thing I’ve found so far is using The Good and The Beautiful writing books (or any other writing book) and reading a story to them while they write. This takes the misery out of working at writing. They just plug along while listening to a story. Or maybe put on one of the Standin Tall stories while they write; they are all on CZcams.
As far as math goes, each kid is really different. I find that Math U See is really effective for most kids through multiplication. I’m hoping to make a video talking about all the math programs we have used and the pros and cons of each, but Math U See is a pretty good bet. I wish you the very best!

I suspect that my oldest may be dyslexic but my youngest is kind of following along and learning as we go as well. Would you say that this curriculum will work for non dyslexic children as well?
My child who is just younger than my dyslexic child found it way too repetitive and boring. But other than that, the skills and knowledge it teaches apply to all readers.
So I have a question please! How well would you suggest this as a tool for a late teen seeking to improve on her reading skills?
I wish I had better news, but I don’t think this would be good for her. It teaches letter’s sounds and letter combinations, but it’s super basic. I think she might feel like it’s talking down to her.
I’m pretty sure my son is dyslexic.
He’s super creative but I’ve never paid attention to the spacing part of it. I don’t know if he is. Some things that kind of have me thinking he is are:
He confused letters b and d
He flips words around so was and saw
When reading he’ll make a “st” sound for ts in the end of a word
The most interesting thing today was he “wrote” on a wall today with a Mr clean magic eraser his name like you would see it in a mirror. He wrote it so fast and when I asked if he meant to do that he said no. So it was like he was trying to write his name but accidentally wrote the letters backwards and flipped.

Hello, I’m teaching a slower learner took year and half to learn letters and sounds. I was not taught in public school phonics so not sure all the rules, how to teach blending etc. would this be a good program to use with my son? I need videos that explain how to blend letters together and all the other different rules etc. I’ve been looking at some online programs that do the teaching but also came across this. :)

Once your daughter finished this book, what did you do next? Was she able to start a different curriculum successfully? I’m right at the beginning of this journey, as we are two weeks into kindergarten and I’m realizing my daughter is probably dyslexic. I already knew she was a completely different learner than my other daughter with ADHD, but I was at a complete loss on what to do until I saw this video, so thank you!
That’s a great question. So, what I did was basically pick up with what I did for the other kids after they mastered their letters and sounds. Short books on their own, then we took turns reading sentences, then paragraphs and then pages from little kid books like Arthur and Curious George. What do you use after you complete this program? Thats the part that is holding me off…. I dont want my child to have gaps by switching to another program
Stay tuned, I’m about to make a video on how I teach my kids to read and it’s the next step after this program. In a nutshell, no specific program is needed. I used the same, simple tools with my dyslexic child after this program that I did with my kids without a reading challenge and it worked beautifully.
Is it possible to just print the first 89 pages and start or do you need pages in the back in section one as well?
I think so. The back has a lot of games and additional activities to help it all sink in. We didn’t end up using that part very much at all.

Ashley I think it would not be ideal for that because the videos are all directed to young kids and a young adult might find that condescending. However, I haven’t found anything that works for older kids, so if your daughter is willing to roll her eyes a bit and just learn from it maybe it would help. I would love to hear if it does because this question comes up quite often. Good luck!

I just found out my son might have yslexia because he cannot decode? Im surprised he really likes to read. But its his writting and reading where sometimes he has trouble. And my son also has trouble listen to himself with sounding out words. And its his bday today and his 9 and thankful his gping to four and not doing summer school. Because his really good at math.
This program is excellent at teaching how to decode words. My dyslexic child is much better at decoding than any of my other kids, because I never took the time to teach them that skill. That is awesome that he’s good at math. I don’t know if it’s typical for dyslexic kids to love math, but my dyslexic child really enjoys it as well.
I found out today that my kiddo is dyslexic.. She's having hard time reading and doing homeschooling for the first time..
That’s a tough row to hoe. But I will say that homeschooling is better than public schooling in a myriad of ways that only brushes on special needs. Having said that, if this program doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to seek help. I’ve heard there are occupational therapists that can help and many areas have tutors just for dyslexic kids.
Your interactions with your daughter will have huge benefits, both in the short and long term. You’ve got this.

Hmmm that’s a good question. It’s been a couple of years. I think we did a letter each day.
Would this resource work for an older kid like 10-12?
Maaaaybe. The ideas apply to all ages, but the videos are geared to younger kids. Still, 10 year olds might be okay with it. I would suggest looking at the videos first. If they’ll work for your child I’d say you’re good to go.
Is this book appropriate for children with auditory dyslexia?
I’m not an expert on all of the different types of dyslexia, but I think this book probably works for all of them. I have also found that doing crossover exercises (where we reach the right hand over to the left shoulder or down to the left foot and vice versa) are really effective in helping my dyslexic child be able to read. I’m not sure if that is specific to auditory dyslexia or not, but it is a cool little trick to have in your pocket.
How do I purchase the book?
The best information I have on that is listed in the description. When I contacted them they said they’re trying to make it available on Amazon, but I don’t know if they have, yet.
Do you offer any free of charge courses for teachers to be certified in Dyslexia?
This isn’t a program that I created. Prenda made it and they may offer something like that. I would just google Prenda to find out.
My son being 11 and. The First grade reading level is so hard. I'm wondering if this is too young for my kids. No Dr's or anyone brought this up until I started really thinking why he's not catching up.
I’m sorry, that’s so hard. I don’t know if your 11 year old would think it’s too young for them, but just let him watch a few videos. They’re online and free. If he’s good with them, the program should work fine.
What do you mean your daughter knew where she belongs spaciously? Could you explain on that further? I’ve never addressed this with my children (homeschooler who was homeschooled) and maybe I need to address it
Emiline, it’s common for dyslexic kids to have strengths in other areas such as artistic skills and spatial awareness. It usually displays by them having good balance or being good in the water. With other kids they are good at taking things apart and knowing how to put them back together, or being able to make 3d puzzles. How old was your daughter when you started this? I am Dyslexic and i think my oldest maybe. He also has HF ASD. He is 6 and wants to read so bad but it's not clicking
She was about 6 1/2. It took about a year to finish it (we weren’t as diligent as we could have been) and now she can read words like damaged, through, wizard, and complicated. It was truly a life saver for us. I’m not sure how autism might change the experience, but I hope this program opens doors for you.

Absolutely. It’s geared to exactly that age.
Any recommendations for a 14 year old?
I’m sorry, I don’t. This question comes up a lot and I’m hoping someone has a good experience either with this program or another one and lets us all know about it. In the mean time, I would suggest letting your child watch some of the videos for this program. If they’re able to just roll their eyes a little at the presentation but still learn from it I think it would work for them. Good luck!

what age is this for? my 11yo son is dyslexic and this seems a bit young, even though he is about a 2nd gr reading level
sumSum5853 it is targeted to a younger audience, maybe 5-8 years old. But the only part that would be too “young” for him is the videos. So have him watch a few and if it’s not a problem I’d say you’re good to go.
Can a teen use this?
Jury’s out. I haven’t heard any moms of teens review it, but I think it would be a hard sell because the videos are so clearly aimed at little kids.
How old was your daughter when you noticed she was having hard time with memorizing letters? I have a brilliant 5 year old who is very intelligent, but can’t memorize symbols. So I was wondering if he has learning disabilities or just still were young?
I think she was 5 when she first started showing interest in reading. By six I knew we had something different than her brothers experienced. Every child is different; there’s no magic age to learn reading. But usually their curiosity is the marker that they are ready to begin learning. It was the disconnect between her desire and ability that raised red flags for me.
