When John Stewart left and Trevor took over, I was wary. I found it difficult to think anyone could replace John. But Trevor has not just replaced him, but has made the show his own and taken it to another level. Love his insight and his approach to hard issues and hard questions. He's wicked smart, he's never cruel and his experience growing up in South Africa, brings depth to these conversations and shows how universal so many of the issues we face are today.

I can't speak to the African experience, I've only been there once (riding on the coattails of a wealthy Brit cousin, so to an extent, we got the colonial experience in Kenya - I'm sorry), but I'm sad to hear that police violence is a problem there, too. I tend to think that it is mostly a white-on-black problem here, but in Nigeria, that wouldn't be the case. Power corrupts, regardless of color, apparently.
But, on a positive note, I so agree with you on Arsenio. His questions revealed nuggets about his experiences, how things have changed over time, and gave Trevor a great springboard. When Arsenio had his show, I completely took him for granted. I see now how unenlightened I was. Funny how I completely get the mistrust of police (my first bad interaction with police was when I was about 9), but I never thought about the difficulties of dealing with executives who didn't understand Black culture and how to promote the artists and issues his audience cared about.

II like his fro also but I do think it could use a little more shape. Back in the day, in the 70’s, our fros were shaped. We used the combs to blow them out and shaped them. Still took a lot of maintenance, as all natural hair does. Today people just seem to let their fros go whichever way they want. Not criticizing them, just saying it was different than today.

Acknowledge and honor the hands that brought you up
Share your victory with the people you work with
    Be real, acknowledge your weakness
See and bring out the light in others
    Know your people
    Know your market
Don't run away from real and though conversations
Be genuinely interested in others, you can't fake it.
Never think you know it all
Be humble enough to manage the spotlight
