Hello WatchMojo
Yesss muantaaap
Thank Thank mThank Thank p
Op
O
"We love the Misfits" shows footage of Graves while talking about Danzig..
Probably because Glenn would have sued them for using footage of him.
Posers.
Right? How embarrassing 😂
And shows footage from '95 talking about their 80s jam, still love the misfits tho whatever lineup.
HAHAHA
Iggy singing shirtless in front of a crowd of people who look like they payed to see an opera😂
"Iggy singing shirtless" is redundant.
It was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
All the best ones take their shirt off
Most of which probably don't know his work really either
How to piss off punk rock fans 101: List Misfits' "Last Caress" at No. 6...then just put a bunch of video from "Dig Up Her Bones" smh Welcome to amateur hour
They also have better riffs I'm the Danzig era them last carres
@@Happylink75 I'm a Hybrid Moments fan myself
@@popunkid a man of culture I see
Talks about Glenn Danzig but yet shows Michael Graves..... In all fairness you can make a whole list just on The Misfits
Came here to say EXACTLY this.
You could make this whole list just off of Walk Among Us and Static Age. Fuck Graves.
It would have to be a top 50!
I was about to Say that... That shows how much you guys know about punk
Where the fuck was London Dungeon?! That song has one of the greatest guitar riffs in the history of punk.
I just posted a comment and let them have it for that shit. Unbelievable
Lexicon Devil from The Germs, that’s Punk in its truest form.
Yeeeeaaah!!!
Forming FTW
Gimmie gimmie this gimmie that aaaaaaaaaa
“Kids of the Black Hole” is another good choice from the Adolescents.
every song on that album is awesome....still. Who Is Who...NO Way...
Is *a better choice
@@DaveAnchovies one of my favourite albums of all time
Why is it titled "of all time" if you're consciously excluding any potential riffs from a certain time period?
No they had rancid in the video remember.😂
Because these are the top 10 riffs of all time
Where's Bro Hymn by Pennywise?! The chorus is literally the guitar riff haha.
such a good song.
I love that song to no end, and Pennywise is near and dear to my heart, but the riff itself was directly lifted from Social Distortion's "1945"
You guys should've showed another clip of Iggy singing.
The crowd was dead.
I am glad they've showed it because it's so comically ridiculous xdd
Imagine all you know is Beatles, Stones, and a shitton of bubblegum Pop and along comes this spastic junkie, screaming and wailing, while high as a kite. You'd be dumbfound too. Good stuff.
Who booked them as the house band for the Golden Globes?
@Sergio Balaguera "these pop punk people keep talking about this band. lets hire 'em" -the promoters probably
Of course, it was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Sex Pistols didn't start punk, that was the Ramones who formed in 1974 and we're doing punk music for 2 years before the sex Pistols came out onto the scene in 1976.
They never claimed they made punk they said usher in punk
i would even argue that the ramones didnt start it. i dont really think it was just one band, it was a collective of bands derived from garage rock bands like the stooges. depending on your definition of punk rock the kinks (who were popular in the 60s) are another example
@@ogan2631 ushering in is another word for started, but it didn't, not in the UK, started in the USA and even Top British Punk and Metal Band idols like Billy Idol even admitted they got their brand of music from the Ramones.
@@sadimasochist4543 bruh the pistols ushered in the UK punk scene I know the Ramones started it but the Pistols started the UK punk scene I could've phrased that better
@@sadimasochist4543 I think you need to clean your ears out as she said the HELPED usher in the age of punk.
Although it released on "Beware Ep" in '80 the track "Last Caress" really is from '78 during the Static Age sessions 🤘💀
In all fairness American Jesus deserves at least a nomination
Bad Religion has literally hundreds of terrific punk riffs.
“No pop punk like Greenday” *immediately plays Rancid*
Exactly
@@letitbeknown8126 what is exactly pop punk? It’s literally the same thing as punk rock, what’s the actual difference? Ramones, Green Day? All power chords, palm muting, etc. uses the same technique/rhythm which is fine, don’t see the need to separate the genre into two styles when they’re completely the same.
While Rancid is more punk than pop punk, I'll agree...because Social Distortion could've filled that spot with "Sick Boy".
@@DMJoeBing what fucking makes any band more “pop punk” than “punk rock”?? Lol. It’s using the same power chords and open chords/Palm muting, fast tempo and melodies. It’s literally the same genre, no reason to make two separate styles.
Rancid is all kinds of punk. They didn't limit themselves to one punk style like a lot of other punk bands.
Dead Boys-Sonic Reducer opening riff is one of the most recognizable and the sole reason I got into punk. Had never heard anything like it before.
"We're leaving our pop punk"
*puts Ruby Soho on the list*
what is exactly pop punk? It’s literally the same thing as punk rock, what’s the actual difference? Ramones, Green Day? All power chords, palm muting, etc. uses the same technique/rhythm which is fine, don’t see the need to separate the genre into two styles when they’re completely the same.
@@sniff790 especially considering if they're going to make rules about separate genres, they broke their own rule.
While Rancid is somewhat poppy, they are the one big radio band that every dirty pop punk hating gutter punk loves. They are part ska punk, part oi punk, and part pop punk.
@@greenmind0428 I despise Rancid so I disagree
@@weatheredtome Tell that to all the kids wearing jackets with Oxymoron and The Exploited patches with the "...And Out Come The Wolves" cover Rancid patch right in the middle I see regularly at shows.
Mommy's Little Monster is another classic.
YES!!!! I was thinking about which Social D song should be on this list. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
That whole album is a fucking masterpiece! Just one solid riff after another.
Absofuckinglutely
You guys really dug deep into the scene for this one. Smh
😂
They combed every inch of Hot Topic to find these hidden gems!
The Jam's In the City is my number one punk riff of all time. They're also my favorite punk band of all time with In the City as my favorite punk album of all time!
Greg Hetson from Circle Jerks/ Bad Religion is one of the most respected riffers, dude has a laundry list of known solos.
l was really waiting for this video .
keep the videos about music coming
new rose... nuff said.
The Dammed, sooooo underated!
I agree
@@javigomez1697 Have you seen " Don't you wish we were dead?" it's a great documentary on a great band that Never got their just dues!
Thank you for spreading Punk Rock, Punk Rocker here
No MC5? Kick out the Jams should have at least been an honorable mention. Blasphemy!
@The Morrigan
I know. I figured if the stooges were up there, why not mc5.
I bet Blitzkrieg Bop is the only Ramones Song they know
So we've never heard of the Dead Boys, Fear, Television, the Cramps, the Damned and for what I believe is a Canadian channel Teenage Head or the Forgotten Rebels? Should have been a top 20 list.
The Cramps suck.
Punk isn't dead, your music taste is
Social Distortion - I Was Wrong
mommys lil monster...
I would put one of their faster songs on the list for sure. I Was Wrong is more bass driven than riffy.
Steve Jones...the undisputed king of thick riffs.
Bad Religion as only an HM seems wrong. They should’ve been on the actual list.
bad Religion is always overlooked in these lists.
With American Jesus I think :)
@@karmajarrule Yes! I mean if you're going for the songs that everyone knows the riffs to, that's the one!
Bad Religion has literally hundreds of killer punk riffs.
Thanks so much Watchmojo for this list.
The Ramones, who invented punk belong at #1. So happy the under appreciated Ruby Soho was included. Back in the day, some people hated that The Clash song, no, not me I loved it❤️
Every punk band they have shown has songs with way better guitar riffs. They only chose the most popular songs from each band. How did they not include any Nofx songs? They are the kings of punk guitar riffs.
Nothing from The Damned, The Saints, Dead Boys, Fugazi, Wire, or Stiff Little Fingers?
Right? The opening riff of Alternative Ulster?! New Rose? And I'll take the riff in Blueprint over all the ones mentioned! This list was put together by Carson Daily and Ashlee Simpson?!
How about Stranglehold by the UK Subs? Or Teenage Kicks by the Undertones? Both have legendary riffs.
You won't believe this The Kinks is the godfather of Punk Rock
Iggy singing in front of an opera crowd. Is it me or is the rock n roll hall of fame the least rock n roll thing ever?
Pennywise - Bro Hymn
Nice
Nice to see bad religion get a mention
@Christopher Bingham with how influential they actually are they always seem to be missed off lists.
my favourite punk rock riff with a great solo is Buzzcocks- get on our own
For a massive part of my life, I always thought the lyrics went, TONY HAWK TONY HAWK TONY HAWK TONY HAAAAWK
You know which song I’m talking about 😂
Agreed I was shocked when I learned it wasent lol
This is actually a good list for once. Good job guys
I was literally going through my head what punk rock Riffs that I know of during the honorable mentions and it's funny because the Ramones came up
Not sure how Social Distortion didn't even get an honorable mention?
Nice, there’s some music between the commercials. 😆
F*** yeah!! There is much more
Bad Brains I against I should've been top 5. Not one shout out to the Cromags?
ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!
God Save The Queen, Holiday In The Sun, and Anarchy In The U.K. by the Sex Pistols are my favorite punk tracks to blast.
Watchmojo should make a top 10 performers/performances of all time list
whatever you're snorting, i want some.
Sorry to say is, but "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" is a straight Pop song... That's what broke up the Clash, or at least Joe Strummer and Mick Jones... Joe continued to do more rebel songs, whereas Mick, decided to go in a much more pop rock direction. Songs in the same vein as "Rush" scream that.
Can you do comic book origin of DC Fiddler?
Kinda surprised they picked Should I stay or go over London calling or Rock the Casbah.
Fully agree
Agent Orange should’ve have been more that just an honorable mention, Rancid Sucks, never should’ve made the list in the first place.
It seems like many of these entries are more about chorus than actual riff. So many more worthy riffs out there than what was presented and chosen here.
Last comment .. I love the pistols ! . But the Ramones rule .. my fav band still to this day
Return of the Living Dead got me hooked on Party Time
It’s such a shame almost nobody talks about that masterpiece of cinematography
Hardcore punk is not classic punk, this list breaks its own rules
Yes I know blitzkrieg bop. I think out of all of these is the only one I really know. I don't think I know about Should I Stay Or Should I Go though. That's an iconic punk rock riff right there not only that its been in so many 1990s movies as well so it's very well known
Oh that's really cool that the lead singer of Green Day joined in with I wanna be your dog. That much of an inspiration
White Riot - Clash, Babylon's Burning - Ruts, Borstal Breakout - Sham 69, Pretty Vacant - Sex Pistols, New Rose - Damned, Hong Kong Garden - Siouxsie and the Banshees, No More Heroes, - Stranglers, Ever Fallen In Love - Buzzcocks
No, this ain’t it.
It seemed like the songs were being judged as a whole rather than the riffs themselves, most of the time in the video the riff was played once for each song (or not at all), then bits of the rest of the song were played
There’s a lot of riffs that should have been on this list I think
I noticed that too. They included bands who have songs with great riffs but then picked their less riff heavy songs?
misfits better be on here...
edit: BADASS list!!!
I would've put them much higher up on the list though. And if they're good talk about a song Glen Danzig is singing then they should've played a damn video showing Danzig singing! It irritated me a bit.
@@stacyragland3123 that's right!!
@@stacyragland3123 they probably don't even realize that Michael Graves sang with them too
At the end, during the promo for a podcast, Steve Lukather is asked if they were surprised by their success. PRICELESS ROCK STAR FUNNY MOMENT.
YES PUNK ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean, I would argue that Green Day are more punk and less pop punk, because pop punk for me is bands like blink-182, All American Rejects, Paramore, whereas bands like Green Day and the Offspring are definitely more on the punk side...
nothing beats that opening riff of God Save The Queen
Yes
My God, what's up with all the ads!
Rancid will always be my favorite
London Calling was considered before going with Should I Stay or Should I Go? White Riot, anyone?
Where's The Clampdown?
Or how about the opening siren riff of Police on my back? ( I know it's a cover, but still... that riff is raging! ).
Or Janie Jones? Clash City Rockers?
Neurotic Outsiders??? One of the best punk collabs ever!
The Damned - New Rose?
Back to the dead Kennedys .... every song rules . Glad I seen them in 84 .
Was the best show besides the Ramones and bad Brains together
Gotta respect a list that includes Pay To Cum. That song still sounds great 40 years later.
Discusses Danzig and Last Caress but shows Graves in Dig Up Her Bones
They pronunced Greg Ginn's name correctly so points for that.
soldier boy by The Varukers also has a sick riff
Instead of focusing on guitar riffs, this video is about 10 most known punk songs. Blitzkrieg Bop is number one???? Seriously?? Joey plays three chords in that riff: A, D and E. Classic three chords for rock'n'roll music. What a creative, amazing and memorable riff! I suggest you to check out Ramones' first four albums and then choose their best riff. Those songs that you hear on radio or in a videogame aren't only punk songs in the world. Joey Ramone is one of best punk guitarist, but he has created many other, most creative guitar riffs than just 3-chord shape. "We're happy family" is song for example. And I recommend you to check out some Minor Threat stuff. Awesome punk guitar! Raw sound, sloppy playing, fast tempo and most valuable thing in this video - creative guitar riffs, that are made just of power chords! Cheers!
The Misfits and Bad Brain's riffs on here sounds a lot like altered versions of Blitzkrieg Bop
Because they are
@@sadimasochist4543 yeah not the Bad Brains though. Last Caress is pretty much the same I will say
And blitzkrieg bop is the altered version of a million rock and roll/blues songs.
Ramones literally admitted they copied Bay City Rollers with Blitzkrieg Bop
Id rate God Save the Queen higher than the Clash anything
shot by both sides
Hi watchmojo
Last caress with footage entirely from dig up her bones and michale graves
Mentions Glenn Danzig, shows Michale Graves
Why the hell is Proud Boy member Michale Graves shown during the Misfits listing instead of Glenn Danzig who created the band? !?
I am now inspired to made my top 10. Conflict was most missed in your List.
10 Social Distortion
9 The Stooges
8 The Clash
7 Ramones
6 Minor Threat
5 Black Flag
4 Dead Kennedys
3 Poison Girls (Persons Unknown)
2 Crass (Big A Little A)
1 Conflict (Mighty And Superior)
Love to hear your reactions
Dead Kennedys had a second guitarist, the mysterious 6025...he wrote some goodies and was essential, with drummer TED, their early amazing unique sound. they soon became another political hardcore band after the second album. 6025 and TED were in DK thru the first lp
The RAMONES was, are and always will be #1 !!!
It’s still The Ramones. But what about “I wanna be Sedated”?
Where is stickin in my eye😂
I would say Ace Of Spades by Motorhead
Or School/Negative creep by Nirvan
"Lexicon Devil" by The Germs!
The problem with this list is not what constitutes punk. It’s what constitutes a GUITAR RIFF. 90% of this is just the same 3 power chords over and over again.
No Circle Jerks? :(
You forgot Kick Out The Jams by the MC5
You missed The Jam, Buzzcocks, The Undertones. 80s punk was awesome!
Finally a video where I don't get to hear "tom delonge" every 10 seconds !!!!!! Finally a video that reminds us that melodic riffs existed way before the 2000's mtv crap, (and at least it came from the guts) . Finally Adolescents get some credit! Hallelujah!
"Stranded" by the Saints should be number one but doesn't even make the top 10 or even runner up.
