I thought it was a wind machine, but also that it was incredibly tacky. It took me out of the movie. That was the moment that I decided I probably wasn't going to like this movie. Then her facing the camera with that big fake grin, ugh. I thought she ruined the whole scene.

Damien said it in his behind the scenes version the dancers brought some of their cars to the shoot. And the freeway had to be shut down for 3 days, one for rehearsal and two days for shooting. And he also talked about how disappointed he was when he turned up for rehearsals because there was so much he hadn't considered in the dance. The freeway was sloped so they couldn't figure out which angle to shoot in, it messed up some of the dancers' moves, the camera wasn't as fluid as they'd hoped, and there was a heat advisory warning for the hottest day of the year. And even on the last day the sky was super cloudy so they couldn't shoot for hours (the song is called another day of sun after all they need a harsh glare to shoot) and then the dancers kept sweating out, and in the truck opening scene the handle broke and nobody could open it.
I have literally no idea how they pulled off one of the best things I've seen this year.
Damien said he was so unhappy and thought it would be a mess, he seriously considered even cutting this whole dance altogether because it was so hard to do.

One of the best, most unique and inspiring films ever made. This opening dance scene blew me away. Every moment in this film is to be savored. What an absolute visionary Damien Chazelle is. I can't wait to see his next film and hope to work with him someday.

I am ALWAYS gabsmacked and starstruck whenever I see big productions like this, and with ALL of the complexities that a LA freeway brings to it (as if such a big number wasn't difficult to produce already).

Wow it's amazing how many details they have to handle. I have so much respect for all of them. The movie is so fantastic thanks to all the departments that worked in it, but sadly not many people think about it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH Mandy Moore for explaining all that and taking us through that ... as a beginner filmmaker it really helps me understand what's involved and what goes into the planning of such a scene, and also the thinking behind certain choreography

I think this is my favourite breakdown because she brings so much genuine enthusiasm and gives so much credit to others. Awesome.
