As a vector artist who's done tons of commercial art and then creative art, I LOVE THIS. It shows how to interpret and evolve a reference. So many people don't give vector artists their due.
THE BEST tutorial of vector art I've ever seen. I enjoyed that.
Thanks for the video. Suggestion, portraits are standardized in the individual parts. Example: a portrait consists of one right eye, one left eye, one top lip, one bottom lip, etc...
My point is this. I would create a blank artbaord with lots of blank new layers. The layers would be labeled right eye, left eye, etc... then I would save the file blank, with all of the layers labeled. Then the next time you go to create a new portrait, you already have labeled layers to use as groups. Even if you end up with a mustache layer on a ladies portrait, who cares. This would be a big time saver if you do a lot of portraits. Same logic is good for cartoon characters. Tail, wings, fangs, ground shadow, etc...
Hope that helps.
"I colour like a 5th grader." 🤣I love it. Great video btw.
It took me the first full three minutes up until the Pen Scribble Text thingy appeared to label the layers to realize that this has been the iPad version of Designer all along, this is great.
That being said, throughly enjoying this. Great vibes too mate.
I come for the tutorial but I stay for the dad jokes.
I'm not sure which is better the jokes or the tutorials...
I really enjoyed watching and listening to you as you did this piece. Great job. ❤
The use of the erase blend mode is a great tip I will definitely start using in my vector work. I keep my layers all organized and named too, I think it's because I originally came from web design. Thanks so much for the video and for the record you never have to apologize for dad jokes. Dad jokes are best jokes!
"Be kind to yourself." Great sentiment. 😃 Thank you.
Just wanted to say that I love your artistic style. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out at the beginning. Frankly, I was taken by surprise a couple times by some decisions you made. Not that they were bad, just that I didn't see them coming. Of course, it turned out far, far better than anything I've ever done.
What I really appreciate is that you've shown me a new, and better, way of creating portraits. And I plan on using what you've shown me in some of my upcoming projects.
Thanks for taking the time to show us your process. It was definitely a learning experience!
This is amazing work. Very inspirational and great commentary. Thank you so much Affinity & Pope Phoenix for this great session. I would love to see more of you!
Pope is Dope! Thanks for showing some of your techniques and tips
My man is hilarious. I really enjoyed this learned a lot. And truly inspiring

Great expression!!! Thank You for Your work!
Love this! Thanks for sharing.
I"m totally new to DESIGNER.....been at it for about a month. THANK YOU SIR for great teaching....THANKS!
Loved this video. I don’t do vector portraits but this gave me a lot to think about for my own vector work. Especially using blurs for depth. Thank you!
Awesome work and voice over. I love the way you did the beard, gonna steal that method.
Love the tutorial - thanks 👍
This was a nice session and your work is nice.
Lovely work, thank you!
Heart video! Thanks for sharing! Jason
Amazing - and entertaining.
Awesome! I love it. I am going to subscribe.
Great technique!!
YES!!
Awesome .. Thanks Man.
I was really worried that the gradients didn't tie together... until the end. That pattern layer was amazing...
Very nice!
It's not the run-of-the-mill vector portrait. Thanks for the useful tips.
awesome
I love your energy! Great tutorial but a bit fast for a beginner like me.. I'm still trying to figure out if you draw those eyebrows and the beard so quickly or if you just sped up the recording to the need on those parts... So those hairs would take me hours!
Hey don't sweat - definitely speeded up! Relax and enjoy the process and the learning. Sure the learning curve is steep to begin with but you will develop a style and a way of working that fits you. And yes, some things can take hours but can be so worth the effort. Been using designer for a year now and loving it. Good luck. :-)
Someone who uses the erase blend mode. Many tutorials will just call it useless! Just like you, I like using it because it's non-destructive.
Nice. Blessings 🙏
@Pope Phoenix: How to Eyedrop a Gradient: Simply select a vector with the gradient and copy it (Ctrl+C; in Windows), and then select your other vector object you want the gradient on and press, Ctrl+Shift+V (in Windows). In desktop program you can paste the gradient under menu Edit>Paste Style as well as Ctrl+Shift+V
need a more indepth tutorial on this specially with outline
Great video and amazing work! Can you tell me what equipment have you use? Mouse and keyboard or draw tablet? Thank you.
great vid lar :)
How did you do the beardedge? subtracting the shape? I saw the block shape then you went back and scribbled the edge?
I used the pencil tool with the sculpt setting selected to reshape the block into a beard :D
How did you make your panels on the right side just icons? Mine has the names and takes up a huge amount of space and I'd like it to be just icons.
Man you are amazing. I want to know sir which tool you used to modify the shape paths of the bird. Thank you
I believe he used the pencil tool, which was set to "sculpt" mode (bottom left on the context toolbar). If you have a shape selected and start drawing on it, you can freely modify its path. It is a great function.
@@jeffreypostma6832 Thank you so much for this amazing information you are right it is really working. Thanks a lot.
Are you using a mouse or pen?
4:18 - 4:30 how was that beard outline done? What tool?
Pencil tool with Sculpt Mode on. Then just draw over the line of a selected shape. czcams.com/video/brax-UbOQwY/video.html
@@KSaul-xb2rw thanks a mil :)
How did he add that many points on the beard, curve and pencil?
I used the pencil tool with the sculpt setting selected. It allows you to change the shape of the vector lines while maintaining the overall shape.
@@popephoenix Thank you a lot for this answer! This part got me like "Wait. You can do that??" And thank you for this video!
I know that name Jen Bartel!
hello! Best way to learn designer? Book? interactive training? thank yoU!
You might want to check out Udemy.com. Their courses are frequently on sale for $10-20 and I've found them to be helpful.
I expect this was brilliant but I had no idea what was going on.
Is this A design or A photo?
Which software..?
This was all done in Affinity Designer.
so easy to follow ,,, not
