Should the Struggling Mariners Bother Buying at the Deadline?

  • The Mariners' offensive woes are continuing to snowball, culminating in the team's latest disaster of a performance in a 2-0 shutout loss to the Orioles. As such, despite Seattle's three-game lead in the AL West, fans are getting antsy and some believe the issues are too major to make buying at the trade deadline worth it. Ty and Colby explain why they wholeheartedly disagree with that take. Former Yankees baseball operations analyst Andrea Arcadipane of ScoutGirlReport.com and The Athletic Fantasy also joins the show to discuss the ongoing struggles of Julio Rodríguez.

We drop out of the division lead, then we're out of a playoff spot. I love the locked on duo. But there's a real good chance that they're 5 plus out of a playoff spot come the deadline. A lot of Julio’s swing and misses are on pitches high out of the zone. Unfortunately many are for strike three. Bad pitch selection is mental and fixable. Amen guys. Trade as much of the farm system PROSPECTS as needed get 3-4 quality proven bats while we have this amazing starting pitching under contract for the next couple years at a relatively bargain price. The window to push for a championship is right now and the owners need to get serious for change - put there $ where their mouth has been for 3 years and show us they are actually committed to win it all. But not holding my breath for Stanton and the group to actually do anything other than a mild appeasing to fans, unfortunately. Hope they prove me wrong. If they do virtually nothing, or worse yet sell, especially with our awesome pitching already in place, it'll be the biggest wasted opportunity in M's history to win a championship (maybe outside the 2001 season).

It seems every fair ball that ends up going foul, every 3-2 pitch swung at outside the strike zone is magnified. Simply because the margin for error offensively is so slim. Since June 18, the Mariners are 4-10 and having gone 19-108 with runners in scoring position. They are better than that. In games where they have had at least 2 hits with runners in scoring position, the M's are 34-9. Return to that and I like the Mariners changes. Yet I don't see that happening when your two top hitters are batting .257 and .252. That's pathetic!

  • @zackbleecker7630
    @zackbleecker7630 Před dnem

I think most fans would agree, there is no one or two players worth trading for that is gonna magically turn this thing around, this coaching staff, ownership group, GMs, all need to disappear. This is year #4 of "now its time to be competitive" yet keep building the team or lack thereof in the exact same fashion of beginning of their tenure. Servais half the time looks like he forgets that he can actually put the game in motion and manufacture runs, his obedience to analytics over playing the hot bats never seem to end well. Dipoto may be working for a PoS owner, but the money you do get to spend? You have blown it on guys who are past their prime or continuous bargain bin hunting hoping injured players turn around. Then without augementing the team in free agency, his specialty is suppose to be trades yet has failed multiple years now to move guys when we have a surplus at the position and our guys actually having trade value. At this point it just feels they are doing this to convince the young core we do have that once FA comes due gotta trade them or watch them leave cause anybody with a competitive bone in their body would not want to play for them.

  • @supernaturalta6174

No. If they try to buy anyone at the deadline, especially given this market, they're going to overpay for them. Take off the homer goggles. Three trades aren't giving them a 50% chance of going to the World Series. 🙄 Even the team they're playing against right now (which also has greater payroll flexibility and better farm system to trade from) don't have nearly those odds.
Let's put it this way: they were a better team last season that sold their closer.
They're actually closer on paper to being the 2021 team which was a 76 win team on paper that also sold their closer. That team won 90 games, but was/is a huge statistical outlier.
*This isn't me saying they will/should trade Andres Munoz.*
I would consider offers for Luis Castillo if a real contender is willing to overpay for him. The Mariners did that once. They already bought and sold Robbie Ray. If this organization prides itself on developing pitching, they need to lean into it.
They need to use this deadline as an opportunity to clear the old dead wood off the roster and give more young guys a chance to play.
Then in the off season, instead of half-stepping and making lateral "payroll neutral" moves that makes them 6 games worse on paper, make at least one aggressive move for a legitimate star hitter and continue to remake their lineup from there with guys who can actually hit a baseball.
The time for team building was/is in the off season, not at the deadline.

People who are ready to sell are definitely being reactionary. That said, I’m not sure I would trade future assets for rental players because I’m not convinced that this is our year. For me, it’s obvious that we need to buy, but I would be interested in longer term investments.

Playoff baseball is all about who gets hot at the right time. If they make proper moves at the deadline and hit a hot streak going into October I would feel good

If your great plan is for them to "buy, buy, buy", then how much longer should they spend losing games before they do that?
Keep in mind, they missed the playoffs by ONE game last year.

It's ok to be disappointed about the last couple of weeks of Mariner output, but sweet Geezuz, so many fans want to jump off the cliff.
Take a breath! Cubs and Snakes as well as others are fading and in 3 weeks we could get some great pieces there, without giving up most of the farm system we have today.
    BREATHE, PEOPLE!

How many of us have lost grandparents and family members that were huge Mariner's fans that never got to see them win? We have the best chance we've had in over 20 years. Go for it.

Crazy to make a video basically titled "should the Mariners give up" and with a thumbnail that says "they're cooked" on July 3rd while in first place in the division. That's beyond just doomer talk that's hater talk.
That's the kind of negativity I'd expect from the Astros talking about the Mariners, not actual Mariners fans.

To be completely honest, I don’t think we should buy but idk also like in my mind a couple bats and a reliever isn’t going to fix this. You can’t fix the entire It’s a shame because this division is extremely windable this season with how terrible the Rangers have been and how bad the Astros were for 70 games but when it mattered most we fell apart the Astros were bound to have a streak and we didn’t keep up with it. When they did I wish I knew how to fix this

Man how long have you even been an Ms fan? Also it’s not “the entire roster”. It’s a few guys not playing up to their average at the moment, and a few other guys the org was cheap on like Garver and Polanco and we can easily swap them for other bats if the org is willing to spend. I don’t know why you’re talking in the past tense either like this season is over already. We’re still ahead right now. It’s like you didn’t even listen to Colby or Ty either. Y’all need to stop being so soft.

@@trevor2133 2006 and to be completely honest because I’ve been in a shitty mood today I commented before even watching the video and made a change to my comment I’m an idiot I know and after finishing it I still am concerned because even if we go hog wild at the deadline that alone can’t fix it it has to be fixed from within and my biggest worry say we trade most of the top 10 or at least half of them to get some guys what if they also underperform Julio doesn’t get it together JP doesn’t get it together cal stays inconsistent Then we have a weaker farm and dudes who we can’t trade without trading more of the farm. We have to pay Kirby and Gilbert soon I’m just concerned that this team can completely fall off the rails and be in a terrible situation so quickly that’s my biggest concern. That’s why I kinda don’t want to buy because of the fact that if the people we need to start playing better, just don’t it’s not like it hasn’t happened before to great players in my heart I believe JRod is an mvp guy but what if he just doesn’t get it back I’m rambling. I guess I’m just upset because this should be our year. This should be our division. There’s no reason for this shit to be happening. I don’t expect the offense to be top 10 or even good but we have shown what we can do if they’re even even just mid to average not all-time bad like they are now
