I think of all the super high level players like Quayle, Govan, Hutchings, etc…of the modern era Rick is by far the best teacher. Most super high level players are terrible teachers. Ya know the super technical player that can rip arpeggios and alternate pick at 250 bpm and he teaches you to do this by talking about feeling of string bends….plenty of those teachers. Rick actually gives the goods. Thank you man. So much

Planting, or pick muting as Paul Gilbert calls it, as been one of the best advice I’ve ever learned to clean up my picking technique. And it’s so logical: playing staccato using this technique helps you to play with the minimum of mouvement, with as much dynamics as wanted while staying relaxed between each strike. And it applies the same if you want to stay strict alternate. Thank you Rick! Your Economy picking volume one is a must have for every player.

This is by far my favorite video of yours so far, Rick! I've been playing for over 20 years, and was doing everything all alternate picking. I was self taught in the days of tab books and instructional videos...no youtube shortcuts. Never even knew economy picking was a thing til recently. So...trying to change picking habits after 20+ years, proves to be difficult. So grateful for the mechanical techniques to help on this journey! Thanks again, Rick. Btw, you and Guthrie are my two favorite players! The feel and techniques and choice of notes you both bring to the table, are simply amazing! Be blessed!

@@Fieldeluxe obviously, he has many amazing videos! In my opinion, he's one of the best players, ever! Im just saying, in this aspect, I've been waiting years for him to break down his mechanics on this specific technique. So for right now, it's my favorite video of his. Hope you have a great day! 😊

Extremely good exercises. I can see these will work extremely well for smoothing out transitioning from strict alternate picking to sweep picking, or economy picking.
    Excellent lesson, thank you Rick.

@RickGraham Every time you put out a video it always inspires me to pick up my guitar and play, no matter what. I have had some really down days of playing in the past couple of months to the point where I was like, what am I doing? Am I just wasting time? I have been playing since I was 15 and I am 53 now and your last video and this one made me pick it up and say oh yeah this is why I love playing guitar! I truly appreciate you. I love your playing, it is how I have always wanted to be able to play and it helps keep me going. Thank you sir.

I had the problem of economy picking long time ago but i Remember One day when my old friend showed me the First VHS Gambale "Monster licks":Frank resolve This problem because when he change direction by his sweep picking he use pair Number of notes and not dispair but...The most important thing for that Technic Is to think the chords and not in positions,he plays "Enclosure" by chromatic approch...he moves arround the roots Notes of the chord and not 3 notes for string in a scale! He put inside the spaces "passing notes" For me was a Revolution...the water under the fingers!!!

In ex 11, where do you (or do not) plant the pick after last note of one loop? At the G string (up stroke) or B string (down stroke) before you string skip? I understand the concept of planting, but not always sure on which string I should plant it in each individual case🙉

Hi Rick. Im curious as to why in the first 3 examples you start with an upstroke? What would be more natural to me would be to do down b string down up e string for the second example, then down down up up on the third example. To avoid the inside picking. Are all these exercises to improve inside picking?

    • @johnplaystheguitar123
