His love with the princess was not blessed, so that he was cursed even after his death. Actually, it's a forbidden love between the general and princess, she chooses death over marrying a prince, the royal family has the general killed, buried in an unnamed, unmarked grave. Hence the swamp and mist. His followers raise him up for a short time to find where his love is buried. They raise her by sacrificing the lives of the soldiers and the two can be reunited and buried together and move onto the afterlife.
I would get it if he got killed, but it also a possibility that was where other soldier were buried for the reason that his grave isn't the only one there.

He has always done his job in the group but he never took advantage of his group's name (something quite surprising from an idol, and maybe all his background played a big role on it), in fact, he was the 1st one (and he's maybe even the only one) who started to do something outside the got7's tag and build his own individual presence (maybe BB as well, but I think he reached his level tnks to got7, however the boy is a great business man and I respect that), he back in their begginings did promote them and jyp, but he never tried to be recognized as an idol of his group, he was just working his ass and played his role till the highest point because he's that type of guy, a super serious hardworker (even if he's super funny) and at many times i thought "dude, this boy is really serious about his work", he has never tried to outcast any of the members but support them and idk why but I always felt like he just got his very first opportunities in Korea yep, tnks to his agency, but he has always been the one who started to move everything (to getting more tv opportunities till starting to work in his own craft and now being a super respected figure in China). He ain't my bias but the kid (lmao) has always been different than all his members and that's why he has such a different path than most idols and even his co-workers.

The theory I read describing this MV said something like:
The hand gestures are similar to performing Taoism magic. The gestures they make are to summon the dead from their graves.
Jackson is supposedly a leader / commander who (probably) died at war, hence the uniform the warriors/soldiers return to him. It took the power of four of his warriors to raise him from his grave.
They protect him as they lead him to his lovers grave. When they all fall down, their work is done, and you can think of it as a sacrifice to their commander.
Jackson (being commander with the most power) repeats the hand gestures (seen earlier by the warriors) to raise his lover from her grave.
They embrace, symbolising their everlasting love.
He repeats the hand gesture one last time to descend them back into the grave, but this time together.
