Spain farmer protests: Scuffles break out as hundreds of tractors converge in Madrid

- Hundreds of tractors converged on the Spanish capital of Madrid on Wednesday, as farmers staged a massive protest in the capital to demand fairer prices and less red tape.
Police said 500 tractors were allowed into Madrid but said more than 100 were turned away.
As protesters gathered in Spain’s central Independence Square, clashes broke out between police and demonstrators.
“We want fair prices, we are selling at a loss,” said Carlos, a farmer who joined the protest.
“We ask that we don’t get products from outside, from third countries that don’t belong to the European Economic Community and don’t have the safety measures we have in Europe.”
Farmers have been protesting for weeks in cities across Europe, most recently in Poland, Greece and the Czech Republic.

If the farmers are put out of business from high taxes and no subsidy then corporations will buy up the farms cheaply. And people will pay even higher prices for food and people will then get genetically modified food. That's been going on in the USA for years.

@@cameronmorris112 Doubtful. Canada is very protectionist of our farming industry. Dairy prices are kept artificially high, and we still don’t have US meat and dairy on our grocery store shelves despite telling the US we would. We recently upset UK free trade talks because of our protection on cheese. We also have a grain pool, even control the price of maple syrup. Canadian farmers in general are pretty well off in Canada. Many are quite wealthy.

The Liberal Carbon tax is what has driven food cost in Canada up! A product produced by a farmer is hit minimum 5 times by the carbon tax from field to consumer. What people don’t realize now is that we don’t even have enough carbon i our atmosphere to properly grow crops! Greenhouse operators put carbon generators inside their greenhouses to help make plants healthier!
