the last balloon that was pulled from the parade in '97 was the cat in the hat balloon. it hit a lamp post and the parts from the lamp post fell and hit someone in the head. they had a fractured skull. i remember it being on the news.

So that's what happened that balloon popped at the Thanksgiving Parade.
Notice that in all the years Barney was in the parade, he was NEVER named Macy's Holiday Ambasitor of (insert year here).
