There’s some theories out there that certain animals (Ex: dolphins, elephants) are inclined to find the human appearance to be pleasant/appealing/attracting.
Allegedly it’s in manner that’s similar to how most humans consider certain types of animals to be endearing & cute looking.
The theories aren’t definitively proven (I don’t even think we CAN prove that with 100% certainty since it’s not like we can ask the animals lol) but it’s something to think about

“Fun” fact: To those who have seen the movie outside of Korea, the eel is one of the most popular characters (more so than Padak). It’s not because he’s fleshed out or have an important arc in the movie, but because he shares the same voice actor as V from Mystic Messenger. There’s actually a lot of thirsty comments about Anago (the name of the eel) if you know where to find it. Weird stuff.

Can I just say one thing I love about the art of this movie is how they didn’t do anything stupid to show that Padak was female? EXACTLY! it's so annoying- also, even if the film IS a rip-off or close enough to be one, there are some 'rip-offs' with quality that only share one aspect. For example, the 'A Turtles Tale' movies come to mind. They share 1 aspect besides water and fishes, and that is the first one being a giant travel movie and the second being a 'save my parents from a giant (and beautifully made) aquarium move. Even with this, there are still enough differences for it to not be a rip-off, yet way too many people view them as ripoffs. then again, might be my nostalgia talking, or maybe my love for how BEAUTIFULLY they animated that SNAKE IN THE FIRST ONE---

Another main part of this movie is that it revolves around fish being eaten alive. It's a type of food preparation in some places.
If anyone realizes that all the fish are moving when they are eaten its because the belief that food is best when fresh and fish are easily and quickly able to be eaten raw. So it conveys what it's like to basically be butchered alive and watch yourself be eaten. This movie should not be compared to Finding Nemo. XD

Yet recent science shows us that just like other animals fish are sentient and alive and feel pain (something until more recently wasn’t believed by the majority at all)
Most people will be aware a pig is smart or a cow feels pain but fish get much less consideration and to see a movie explore a story like this with fish as the characters is wonderfully dark and thought provoking
It reminds me of films like ringing bell chirin and leafie a hen into the wild, watership down or the plague dogs

And she has a large pleco, the fish that like to suction themselves to the side of tanks. The fish may have eaten each other but I think the water just killed them. She cleans it but maybe the stress of being scooped out and the new water just didn't sit well with some of them. Either way, she still has about twelve or so of those fish and the pleco all in a 50 gallon tank so I think that the smaller number is for the best.

    • @Moony1568
      @Moony1568 Před 4 lety +16

Felidae the movie is not that great. It butchers the plot so badly that it’s hard to follow unless you’ve read the book beforehand. The mystery is not played out as well as it is in the book and the main villain’s plans are not explained. I saw the movie before reading the book and I liked it only because it was the first adult animated film I’ve ever saw. After reading the wonderful weirdness that is the book, I dislike the movie.
To spoil the book: Felidae is about human and animal relations. About how we are not that much different from the animals we share this world with. However, we use and abuse animals without ever appreciating them for what they are. The cats in the book might as well just be humans with fur just from how they talk and behave. Francis goes on entire monologues about how humans are gifted with great intelligence and ingenuity but we waste our efforts on sitting around and getting fat. We destroy our planet and the creatures within and do little to nothing about it. Francis doesn’t hate humans, he finds us frustrating. That’s what Felidae is about. The genetics stuff with the breeding just adds to this narrative. *GAINT SPOILER AHEAD*
Pascal (aka Clawdandus) wanted to reverse the breeding process and brings cats back to their origin because of his intense hatred of humans. His ruthless actions to achieve one goal actually makes him the most human-like cat out of them all, thus becoming the very thing he despises
I love Felidae so damn much and the movie does not do it justice at all.

Since your taking about animated films with dark and depressing subject matter. "Chirin No Suzu" (Chirin's Bell) is right up you're alley. Unlike Padak, it's a family film which has a very unique history. It's based on a children's book based on the author's experiences in WWII. The author suffered PTSD after the war and one of his ways of coping was by making children's books. While some were lighthearted, others such as "Chirin no Suzu" and "The Kindly Lion/The Gentle Lion" had some very depressing and dark subject matter for a kid's book.
The Kindly Lion (The Gentle Lion) gained an animated adaptation in 1969, while "Chirin no Suzu" gained an animated film in 1978. However, Chirin's Bell is his most well-known work and gained a lot of different retellings in Japan. The 1978 is also made by Sanrio (Sanrio Animation) back when the company had their own animation division. They also made two Unico movies based on Osamu Tezuka's manga series of the same name.
Seriously, Chirin's Bell (aka Ringing Bell) is one of the most fascinating things I've come across. The behind the scenes and real life information is even more interesting than the movie and book. Chirin's Bell is also the author's most personal work.
Note: No I didn't come from Steve Reviews, since I heard about this movie (and book) years ago.

When it comes to movies and stories of any kind that make fully sentient living things being subjected to death at the hands of humans, the kind of horror I feel isn't, "What if I was put in their place?" For me, the horror element comes from me feelings as though I am the monster inflicting suffering on others and how they must be feeling.
I have to admit, while I hate feeling that I've caused another living being to feel such dread and desperation or rather that I could potentially do so to said living being, I also think it makes for excellent and poignant horror and drama if done well.
I don't know if that's just a me thing or if others feel that way as well, but either way, it's one of the very few things in this world that genuinely disturb me. In a way, I don't mind feeling disturbed because I like to think that when properly channeled, it can lead to worthwhile thought on the matter as well as creativity.
Long story short, I think it's safe to say that this film is a prime example of exactly that concept. Something that really struck a cord with the director of this film in some way gave him a spark of imagination to make this movie in the first place and presented its message well.

@D Zuke I think the point that Ronin was trying to make was not that it's wrong to eat animals. That's survival and until we find a reliable substitute we will continue to do it. The point they were trying to make is that it IS terrifying to think you could be causing another sentient being such pain and suffering. And remember even though animals like cows can't feel the way we do, it doesn't mean they don't feel pain so causing undeserved suffering into other living beings is not acceptable. It should be as quick and painless as possible.

Thank you, Ronin. I’m not a vegan or animal rights activist by any means, but this movie gave me pause. When I saw the fish served while alive, I thought that was just an exaggeration of the fish’s plight, but then I discovered this is an actual dish called Ikizukuri. I know different cultures have different perspectives. But it does bother me that the fish are suffering in a way that seems unnecessary. If there’s a way we can preserve humane treatment of these animals before killing them, I think it’s worth pursuing.

Same! I was thinking to myself the whole time, " Am I a monster for eating fish?"..it really gave me chills.
