    When you see variable pitch fenestrated props on drones- you'll have something quiet enough to be sneaky. This tech is required on the tails of helicopters like the H135 that do inner city flying in cities like Las Vegas. When you hear a helicopter, you are usually hearing the tail rotor. This is partly because of the axis plane and partly because of the blade shape. Fenestrated tail rotors are enclosed in a housing that interrupts the axis plane of the blades.

    I think the loudness of a drone has to to with the RPM as well. For example, the Spark has the smallest propeller so the RPM needs to be very high for the drone to take off. The Mavic is Quieter than the Spark maybe is because the Mavic doesn’t need the RPM as high to take off. The better way to measure this would hold on the drone while input the maximum power.

    Another factor of the sound is the frequency that the blade make. Because the smaller the object, the higher the frequency of the blade (there is a turning point)

    Computer Engineering student here. The decibal scale is logarithmic, to be specific it is 20log(n), where n is the frequency in radians. It basically represents exponential increases in frequency linearly. Most likely so that you don't have to turn the knob on your reciever for 3 hours to change the volume a decent amount.
    I don't know all the details about it (pitch and volume are two different things, so do they each have a value on both scales?), but that's the gist

  • @BrandonWatkinsBmW13294

    Maybe you've mentioned this at the end of the video but I haven't seen it yet but the DJI Platinum also changes the motor controller chip. And I believe there's a slight change to the motors themselves.

    The platinum has something called a "Raked Wingtip" Something the Boeing company introduced on the 767-400ER. However the best example of the comparison can be found on the Boeing 777-200ER. Boeing added the same shaped wingtips and that made the Boeing 777-200LR. The tech behind it on the planes was to cut the vortex generated by the wings decreasing drag.

      They'd be missing a big market if they don't make a smaller version. Currently, micro 2inch quads are gaining popularity, so it'd be interesting to see DJI try to jump into that market.

    Usually with shorter propellers you need to move them faster than bigger ones to create the same amount of force which in turn makes more sound. it also depends on the shape of the propeller. Weight and size of the drone also affects noise being made as wel.

    +3dB is double the power, but for sound (dBA) that's a simplification because of how our ears work.
    Our ears have a curve that looks a bit like exponential as well, resulting +3dB sounds about 25% louder. :)

    Prop noise also has to do with blade rpm and design , the more a blade "cuts" the air the more the sound will lead towards the high pitched "swish" that you hear in sword fighting videos. But that presents an issue in flight performance as the blade has less lift than one that had a different angle of attack on the air , basically the more lift a blade creates the more sound it's going to make due to the air it moves and the turbulence it will inevitably create. Ideally for silent flight you want beefy high lift blades that spin at very low rpm ,but those aren't efficient at all. So that's why the army went with very fast spinning blades that have a variable pitch ( angle of attack ) so that when the helicopter is up in the air they can modify the pitch to reduce sound , so whilst it would hover somewhere either laying in wait for a target or just preparing for an attack they can modify it's pitch to allow for jus the right amount of lift and minimal noise. It's like hitting the surface of a lake with a paddle flat on or cross. They're going to make different sounds and the cross one whilst not completely silent it will be quieter and the sound will travel less.

  • @akshay884
    @akshay884 Před 6 lety

    The reason that spark scored around 94 db was u were standing near the obstacle avoidance of the spark and the drone was making a beeping noise which added up with the blade sound to get a 94 db sound.
