Mavic Air *ALMOST* Became my Least Favorite Drone - Review

- DJI makes some amazing drones. The Mavic Air is no exception. Its extreme portability, its dashing good looks. BUT what is the point of all that if it doesnt fly well? Thats what we are here to find out. And my first adventure with the DJI Mavic Air did not go so well. Everything was updated, Beginner mode turned off, Flight limits set to maximum.... and nothing. It would not fly farther than 160 feet. (60 meters) Not good.
Luckily... I tested the drone out a few days later... and everything started working again. You'll have to see the video.

I did. Plus set the max distances correct. And power cycled the drone 4 times. Nothing. Until another update pushed through a few days later.
That is very interesting! You're prob right it needed that updated firmware, though I've never seen that issue before in my years of DJI flying like you.
You remember what error it was giving you? Could it have been location, 2.4Ghz interference, or maybe NFZ boundaries...
Glad you got it working now - I've been loving the Mavic Air so far, and possibly the most bang for the buck drone with killer camera and features (and Sport mode is insanely fast! :)
Just kept saying "maximum flight distance reached" even tho the settings were clearly set farther than 160 feet. But ya! I'm excited to try it out more now that it's working.
You need to log out of the GO 4 app then log back in making sure you have an internet connection. You only need to do it once.
JerryRigEverything did you have full GPS signal? Last time I flew it had a limiter on range when I didn't have full GPS on the drone

I love my new Mavic Air, had it for 2 days and everything has been amazing. It is my first Dji drone, the only downsides are that they constanty update stuff and you have to restart etc to get it to work, and the first setup is not simple
Your antennas are parallel with the controller when holding it. That is best for flying straight up.They should be perpendicular pointing to the sky if you are trying to get distance.

I bought mine early 2019 and it never had any of the glitches or bugs you had with yours.....
I like the motorcycle shot at the end and how the Air was avoiding lite poles, wish you did more of that kind of "stuff", lol, thanks! Hope to get one in 2019.

was beginner mode still on? I think it is set as default when you first fly the drone. Or did you turn off beginner mode when the mavic was still in the air?

The DJI app crashes way too much to use a controller with no screen. The Mavic is the only one I'd recommend.

中国制造 Made in China My mistake I meant the Pro. The app crashes every time i fly and with the screen on the remote at least I'm not flying blind. I'm sure they'll have a 2nd version i would wait for that. But i really wish they'd keep the app from crashing!

I've never had the Go app crash before when using my P3A, but yeah - redundancy is always better. Aside from that though, it shouldn't be the end of the world if the app crashed midflight. The drone should just return to home after a minute or so without inputs.

The same thing happened to me, but with my Phantom 3 pro. I went to Mexico city and got to fly only 200 ft around me, it was very frustrating. Ended up finding out that you need to uninstall and re-install the Dji app on your phone and it worked like a charm.

I have a mavic air also and I had a simliar issue with the drone when there was another drone flying nearby mine. As soon as the other drone was gone, the drone worked perfectly.
I noticed that your antennas have been pointing directly to the drone. Air has omnidirectional antennas, as long as they are perpendicular to the direction to the drone. The area above pointy antenna is actually a dead zone for wifi. I think it might have contributed to the short range.

Can the camera in the Mavic Air tilt horizontally ? Can the camera keep streaming if the drone go far a distance ? I want to know the difference between the WiFi frequency in the Mavic Air with the radio frequency in the Mavic Pro and if it can do the job for a normal fly.
Something is wrong with your drone because mine can go 2km far !!!! It's an awesome drone check it because there might be a problem btw mine doesn't shake in strong air gusts!!!!!

I was really frustrated with my mavic air when I first got it. Updates and no fly zones and weather was keeping me from flying. It hasn't updated on I've a month now and I got more familiar with it. I am really enjoying it. Can't wait for warmer weather. Blue skies will be awesome with the circular polarizer I bought as well.
Why would you take off from a vehicle? Real bad piloting for someone who states they know drones...and then you had to make a political statement....
Agree. The metal of the vehicle messes with the calibration of the drone. That's the reason why the drone started flying weird and couldn't compensate with the strong wind.

Less than fossil fuel pollution has. Oil spills kill way more animals than a windmills.
Nite Explorer probably not much, where I live the wind mills have speakers with sounds and flashing lights to keep the birds away, works really well

Hey great video! I noticed that your antennas on your controller were completely flat. You should bend them to a 45° angle (as they are built to send radio waves in circles) to get maximum range for your drone!
