The Head Of The 9 Day Queen's Father - Sir Henry Grey

- Throughout the Tudor period, there were many men and women who lost their heads after being accused of treason. One Queen who lost her head inside of the Tower of London was the 9 Day Queen Lady Jane Grey. Following the death of Henry VIII’s successor Edward VI, Jane was named Queen as the previous King wanted a strong protestant monarch. But Jane would be deposed a number of days later as Mary I managed to oust her. Mary was the eldest daughter of Henry VIII, and was probably the rightful successor and Queen, however she then sought to punish those who had been behind Lady Jane Grey’s accession to the throne. There were a number of executions which were ordered, and one man who lost his head was the father of Jane, Sir Henry Grey the 1st Duke of Suffolk. On the 23rd February 1554 on Tower Hill, an axeman took his head off but this would not be the end for his head which hundreds of years later would be discovered having been smuggled out of the Tower of London.
I was a pupil at Sir John Cass Foundation School, Aldgate. St Botolphs was the school’s church. In the 1950s, my class was shown the head you refer to. School children later were disappointed to not see it as it was buried. Kids like a good gruesome. However, seeing the head made history really Real to my class mates and I
I'd love to see someone reconstruct the face, it's so interesting to see them more as they really were, instead of portraits.
I've always thought that Lady Jane's father, loved his religion more than he loved his daughter.
I don’t think he cared about either; he loved power.
He was a bad father and as evil as his wife
@@ileanaacacostaacosta1813 Ya, thats Henry, the Duke of Sussex for ya ....
They all used their children as pawns.
Tower Hill is not in the Tower of London but across the moat next to what is now the Tower Hill Tube station. The reason the female Tudors/spouses were executed inside the Tower was to preserve some semblance of decorum for the women. Men apparently didn't need decorum so their deaths could be a public spectacle. This means that getting the probable Duke of Suffolk's head to Holy Trinity Minories was really simple as it was only a few hundred yards away from the execution site.
I love how monarchs often have the trashiest family histories lol
They are too often the kind of people who should be kept as far from power as possible.
Halleluiah! Someone actually said what I have thought for many a years. Young Edward while deathly ill was tricked into naming his cousin Lady Jane to inherit the crown. A lot of things that a King or Queen did was not all their fault but of those who were advising them. Putting the ideas into the monarchs heads. Like with Mary I. It was her advisors to talked her into burning those who would not return to the old religion. And these advisors were of the Catholic church and from Phillip's court. They cared not for the English people only their master.....Phillip. And after the nightmare that Mary ? had lived through torn away from her mother and bullied by her father and his second wife. She was scared badly and listened to Phillips men. Edward, who was sickly and still a child who had been sheltered all his young life. Knew nothing of the real world only what his Uncle and his advisors told him. Greedy men concerned not with the country but for themselves, their pockets and what power they could obtain.
Mary was adament about returning her realm back to the Catholic faith, so it's doubtful that her council had to do much convincing to get her to sign off on the executions. She could have stopped it but she chose not to which tells me that she wasn't too bothered by it.
@@chadmiller2224 Mary didn’t wish to burn the Protestants. She was bothered. Yes, she forced everyone to attend Mass, but she didn’t order the burnings because she wanted them dead. She started burning Protestants after she had her Phantom (or Molar) pregnancy. Back then, people were heavily religious and Mary’s advisors believed the supposed Pregnancy failing was due to Mary tolerating Protestants. This is why it happened.
Terribly redacted and full of lies.
Wow, some people must be VERY old
What a sweet video. Grandma has a beautiful voice and the baby's rapt attention and smile are precious
Like anyone but you cares.
I always love hearing your stories.
Henry VIII had the succession legalized through Parliament as Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth. Edward saying he wanted Jane to succeed in his will, was not sufficient to made it official or legal. Although he issued letters patent and intended to change the Act of Succession, he died before he did so. Therefore, Jane isn't actually counted as a British monarch and the shortest rule of any monarch is considered to be that of Edward V, one of the incorrectly labelled Princes in the Tower. His reign was two months and a few days before Richard III usurped the throne. Mary I's reign dates from the death of Edward VI.
Henry VIII’s obsession with a male heir ultimately destroyed the Tudor legacy.
The most unfortunate Mary l, seemed to have an extremely lonely life. While she was forced to sign a document saying she was illegitimate, and not being able to have her mother in her life; among other indignaties she suffered. Her father, Henry Vlll had six wives, and she couldn't have one husband while she was still young.
That would make anyone hateful. She had everything, and nothing at the sametime.
I've often wondered if Elizabeth I purposely ended the Tudor line because of the brutality of her father and grandfather.
Their complete obsession with male heirs.
No it's because to royals the male s were too important to carry on nothing to do with what you said
@@missrose0077 Now, that is an interesting thought....
The irony being that he was responsible for the gender of any children.Obviously not known in those times
If it took 2 strikes to take that head off then how is it Henry Grey’s when his was taken off with only 1 strike?
Maybe it was the head of Essex who lost his head as well for Treason. His mother could have stolen it to keep it close to herself. So in actual fact it could be the head of Grey or Essex. They will have to do a DNA test to decide which of the two.
The historian, Chris Skidmore, in his book, Edward VI The Lost King of England, states that it was Edward himself who initiated the "Devise" to alter the Succession to exclude his half-sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. How was he coerced?
He wasn’t coerced. There’s proof that the new will was Edward’s own idea. An original draft has proved this.
Yes, agreed. Edward initiated the "Devise" himself, he wasn't coerced.
As fervent as Mary was about Catholicism, Edward was even more so about Protestantism, regardless of the problems it committed in his realm. Not to mention, both Edward and Jane shared their fervor and intellectual passions for the New Religion, not only their beliefs but beliefs as only fervent teenagers can express them. Jane "fan girlled" famous scholars and intellectuals on the Continent who in turn, recognised her powerful intellect. She was educated by John Aylmer and Heinrich Bullinger and conversed with the famous scholars like Roger Ascham, also taught Elizabeth and who later became Secretary to Mary and later Elizabeth. Ascham taught writing, thought, writing style , Greek and the use of vernacular languages. A well-known public intellectual and scholar of the New Religion and Teachings like Ascham, his circle would easily have contributed to Edward's high opinion of Jane as a potential ruler of England.
Shockingly fascinating!
Henry VIII's will and his promiscuity, along with his penchant for getting rid of wives did cause a bit of a problem after his death.
His sister Margaret's line ,giving us James V and then ultimately his grandson James VI.,was heavily favoured both by Henry's will and the desire of the people to have a male King,so I think you're right in surmising that Jane Grey's father was a huge catalyst in pushing her onto the throne. BTW his title is pronounced Mar-quizzzz/ss . And the unfortunate girl was a sad pawn in a vicious game.
As the state of the head discussed in Victorian times doesn't match the description of his death, there will always be a possibility that they are not one and the same.
But,thank you for an interesting, as always, video. Very best wishes to you&yours.
James VI was the grandson of James V,. James V was only survived by 1 legitimate child.- Mary, Queen of Scots. Henry's will in fact disinherited the family of his sister Margaret even though James VI did become James I of England and Ireland on the death of Elizabeth
@@pedanticradiator1491 Your absolutely right about him being grandson,my dyslexia causes me many problems.
It was Henry's son Edward who changed the line of succession to favour his sisters, his father's original will favoured Margaret's male line, though they were both papists & Scottish.
I've read far too many versions of the changes around the succession after Henry's death,so am not going to argue voraciously, nor do I really care. Best wishes to you&yours.
@@TheWhore2culture no Henry had fallen out with Margaret and had fought against the Scots so he cancelled out her descendants from his will. It was Henry not Edward who restored Elizabeth and Mary to the succession and stated that after them if they had no children it would go to the family of his younger sister Mary (grandmother of Jane Grey). I'm sorry to argue it with you but I have been studying Royal and political history for over 30 years and I like to get things right.
Game of Thrones was pale in comparison to the real history of thrones and those who seek to sit on them. Give me a life out in the Tudor countryside, as far from the court as possible.
There was no probably about it - -as the eldest daughter Mary WAS the heir legally.
I was wondering how the head was preserved in the damp English weather.
Surely 'Peter Ad Vincula' (Peter in chains) not Peter Ad Vincular? Occiput pronounced Oxiput.
It's an A.I. .
Marquis instead of "Mar-Kee"
and
Heir instead of "Air"
It's "reading" .

Everytime I see that picture of Mary I can't help but see Dennis Waterman from the Sweeney and Minder ("Do wot Arfur?") 😅
Could you please explain what is inside the circle on the execution site?
Henry Grey had 3 daughters. Jane, Catherine/Katherine and MARY. Not "Margaret" as mentioned by narrator.....
It is sad that any possible contenders to the throne who rallied or schemed to take over the throne HAD to be executed . This was to prevent constant rebellions and usurpers to the throne. She , in this case was not entirely in the wrong but she was used by men who wished to create a puppet of her for their gain and that of their son. But she paid the price.
Wasn't Jane Grey's youngest sister named Mary, not Margaret?
Yes. Jane was the eldest of the Grey sisters. Her younger sisters were called Katherine and Mary, there was no Margaret.
Yes, correct. Mary was the youngest sister, Katherine, the middle sister.
Margaret is Henry's v111 older sister Mary is younger. His brother who was heir apparent died.
Lovely pic. Was just about to settle down for a spot of lunch
Purtroppo la traduzione automatica è a dir poco orribile, si capisce molto poco.
Put the head to rest nobody cares whose head it is put the soul rarest
They can't pronounce Arundel in Peterborough. They call the ROAD with the name A-run-dul.
Had a friend who came from Brighton who couldn't believe it.
Is he OK now?😢
The chapel is called the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula not ad Vincular, as it is spelled in the video.
While I was at whitehouse school in hartcliffe bristol I was shown the head of inspector Barlow we used to have a kick around with it even in the snow sliding tackles galore
It was the unfortunate manipulation of an innocent teenage girl.
All the movement and travels of dead body parts seems strange to me.
Would not every head rot for 400 years?
Probably only for the first 200. But pee-ueee.
I find it ironic and incredibly hypocritical that while Henry VIII executed thousands of Catholics, Mary, his own daughter and the legitimate heir to the throne is labeled "bloody Mary"! Maybe we should name Henry the psychopath
He was pretty much.
From my understanding she was merciful at the beginning of her reign. As more rebellions happened, she got less merciful and of course there were the burnings of protestants, hence her nickname. Kind of a shame for her really because as pointed out above, Henry VIII had many more people executed (70,000 beheadings alone if I recall correctly).
It's par for the course as Mary Tudor had thousands of Protestants executed, hence her nickname. Do we really need to try to keep score between her and her psychopathic father?
I’m not sure if Henry VIII is thought by anyone to be either psychologically or emotionally stable and there is far more just the terrible and pointless deaths of many Catholics to prove that. Which is probably why he doesn’t have anything attached to his name and title to denote that. Just saying Henry VIII brings up images of a wife killing, monastery destroying despot who did whatever he felt necessary to increase his power and couldn’t care less who he trampled on to achieve his goal.
I also think that Bloody Mary was probably thought up after the death of Queen Mary to aid in making the Protestants put to death during her short reign, be seen as martyrs. It has probably stuck in part to differentiate her from both Mary Queen of Scots and from the other Queen Mary’s that came after, as they were either consorts, so have no number or joint monarchs, so the number system isn’t really used for the Queen Mary’s and people will mostly take the quickest and easiest route to do so.
He had a particular skull shape 😒
It was religion. Edward was brought up protestant. Next in line Mary was catholic, in order to exclude Mary, they excluded Elizabeth on the same grounds and went to Jane as next probable protestant. Backfired of course, would have been better off with Elizabeth who was protestant
Incredibly stupid man. You'd think he would have taken the hint after he'd been miraculously spared his daughter's end.
Why would anyone steal a head?😮👀😯
To get ahead in life
Henry Grey's third daughter was Lady Mary Grey, not Lady Margaret Grey.
He never got to see the dentist very often...
😞🤦Cruel And Mean..
This is complicated
Burning coffins for warmth....just smh....
People are disgusting.
What was the other option?
The 3rd Grey daughter was called Mary not Margaret...
Serve Suffolk right to be honest. He sacrificed his daughter Jane on the altar of his own social ambition so he got his just deserts.
Interesting!
Thanks. Ahead of it's time.
DNA should be able to solve this.
I’m wondering how old he was when he met his end.

Henry Gray wasn't the first Duke of Suffolk. His wife's father was Charles Brandon and was a close friend of King Henry Vlll. And the king made Charles the Duke of Suffolk. But I don't believe that Charles was the first either. I'm not sure who was the first but it wasn't Henry Gray.
Charles Brandon was the first Duke of Suffolk of the 2nd creation and Henry Grey the first and only Duke of the 3rd creation
@@pedanticradiator1491 2cd creation, 3rd creation???? What is that????
@@cathyhendrix7552 it means that the title Duke of Suffolk has been created more than once due to having become extinct. Many of the older peerage titles have been created several times. Often the 1st holder of a new creation is related to the previous family who held the title but not always. The 1st Dukes of Suffolk were members of the De la Pole family who were stripped of the title due to them being enemies of the Tudors.
De la Poles were the Dukes of Suffolk before the Brandon's/Grey's. And before that I thought it was a Beaufort that held the title?
@@sonyawaldron6476 no the Beauforts have never been Dukes or Earls of Suffolk

given the violent history of the English Monarchy - I would have rather been born a blacksmith's son than a 'royal' yeesh.
Henry the 8th was a psychological thug.
Not 'Arun-dell' making it sound like a place from LOTR, but 'Arundle', like 'trundle' or 'bundle'. You robotic nature is made even more obvious when you mention that Grey 'became a knight. Of the order of the garter...' But then, being a robot, you don't read comments.

With a Queen ruling, most of the worst atrocities were committed.
