    The FGM you mentioned is not technically a sterilization procedure because that would mean they couldn’t reproduce. The removal of the head of the clitoris can actually be treated with reconstructive surgery nowadays (thank god), which is lesser known, but the mutilation is extremely painful and can actually cause UTIs, childbirth complications, infection, and death.

    You really are doing amazing with the long-form content, there have been a few other tiktokers who's content brought me along to their CZcams channels and you are the only one that has kept my interest and I've watched all of your historical videos (I have a deep-seeded discomfort with blogs though so I haven't really watched those but I also haven't tried to watch a vlog in 80 million years). Two things I thought of during this is how these same topics reappear throughout history and yet we never learn which is both fascinating and terrifying. I was also reminded when you were talking about royal witnessed births how consummation of marriages were also witnessed so that the marriage could not be annulled by the church if it was falsely claimed that the consummation never occurred.

    Very much worth watching, even more so a year later. One of the first "nudges" from the Universe to become a minister was reading Margaret Atwood's book The Handmaid's Tale when it first came out in the early the mid 80's- I thought it was just going to be another post apocalyptic type adventure novel, not realizing that it was going to point out something I'd been noticing around me at the time- the rise of what we now call Christo-Fascism or Christian Nationalism, but back then was simply the rise of the Moral Majority and the Christian Right and it's unholy alliance with Republican politics. The movie in 1990 would would have the same effect.
    As my calling to ministry came closer that story along with the books of Bishop John Shelby Spong such as "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism" and "Why Christianity Must Change Or Die" brought home in my that I was meant to be a minister to lend my voice to the growing fight against the rise of this.
    During the pandemic, while home I started watching the new version of Handmaid's Tale on Hulu, and I had to stop about 5 or 6 episodes into the first season, with Trump in the White House, and people dying around me it was just too on point.
    I finally have been forcing myself into it over the last couple of weeks, taking an episode or two at a time, and then putting Archer episode on Hulu after to just lighten the mood. I'm halfway into season 2 now and seeing a lot of scenes fleshing out the rise of Gilead, especially the men coming together to create this Christo-fascist supposedly pious society that subjugates all women, while at the same time slipping off (and slipping off their piety) to the whore houses they set up.
    Project 2025 is the blueprint for Gilead, and the 4th Reich all rolled into one. It is NOT a joke. And every vote not for President Joe Biden or lack of vote due to whatever one thinks is a valid reason for sitting out this election is a vote FOR this horror whow happening on our shores, in real life... and eventually the world.

    • @DaisyFoko
      @DaisyFoko  Před 2 měsíci

    with regards to the discussion of the birthing centres, it happened in Australia too. First Nation's women were put into centres, where they were bred by white men to produce "whiter" children. those children were then taken and placed in white homes to assimilate them into "white Australia". the worst of all? there are adults alive today who were Stolen from their mothers, and the practice, though frowned upon, was still happening in the 1970s and 1980s here in Australia. so some of these kids who were Stolen are now approaching their 50s and have not found their parents yet. It's honestly one of the most disgusting aspects of Australia, the casual racism towards Indigenous Australians. The government hasn't even offered a treaty to the Indigenous Australians, and First Nations people continue to be incarcerated at significantly higher rates than non-Indigenous people (14.7 times more likely). Despite the fact that over 90% of the Indigenous population has been wiped out since the English found Australia, and only represent less than 7% of the population, they make up over 60% of incarcerations and people in prison here in Australia.
    I'm not hating, just educating because I think the ideal of Australia is largely that it's comfy and safe and care free, but we have systemic issues as well and deep rooted racism within our culture.
    This video is so cool though, thank you for breaking it all down. I love learning new things!

      There is a lot of Australian history that has been well hidden/ignored. The stolen generations and unpaid house or farm hands (slaves) happening up to about 40 years ago is definitely a part of Australian history that everyone, at least in Australia, should know. Unfortunately we cannot go back and fix it all, but acknowledgement does play a part.
      On a side note. I was born in 1978 to unwed parents who were married a year later. My mother had to put me up for adoption, then my father could adopt me, and as his wife, she could then share guardianship of me. I'm 100% Caucasian, and I know this was happening into the mid 80s

    The algorithm did a great job for me this time because I'm currently rewatching all seasons of the Handmaid's tale, and this time I'm aware of Margaret Atwood saying nothing of this is fiction and noticing all the real life horrors ir draws on. Treatment of women in Iran, genital mutilation in Africa, punishment for adultery in Saudi Arabia, persecution of homosexuals in Georgia and Uganda plus the pink triangle the Nazis used, not even mentioning the most recent political developments in America and Europe (Serena = Giorgia Meloni).

    Canada always gets this weird "we are so wonderful" reputation, but the Canadian gov is still taking Indigenous children away from home and placing them in White households, just through the foster care system. Sometimes, taking a child away is warranted, but very often children are taken because Indigenous values don't necessarily line up with White values. Children are also not often placed into Indigenous foster families or family members and instead placed with White families thousands of km away from their home. The amount of Inuit kids who are taken away from the North and are being brought up in the South and learning nothing about their culture is honestly disgusting. (I'm Inuit with a White mother and I've seen this way too much)

    For context: The type of female circumcision practised in Indonesia is very different to what’s going on in Africa, and is probably the most comparable thing to what US parents are still doing to their baby boys on a massive scale, since they “only” remove the foreskin of the clitoris or p*nis, respectively. Don’t know how bad the situation is in Canada - they do tend to copy a lot of things from the US, but luckily, not *everything.*

    I think an important thing to mention is that not every fascist fulfills every single one of the 14 points. because humans generally don't fall quite that neatly into definitions.
    this is an important point because a lot of real life fascists deny being such because they differ in one or two of the 14 points.
    also, as a historian I have to say your history references were generally absolutely great! you pointed out some big parallels, some of them comparably unknown. I am not sure you're right about Mary Webster, because mock executions are sadly a pretty common torture method, so there is an almost unlimited amount of possible references the fake hangings could be based on. mary webster is a possibility, but I think it's just more mental torture by a fascist regime.
    also, as sweden was not invaded in world war 2, the nazis did not abduct a lot of swedish kids. they abducted norwegian and danish ones. but that's just nitpicking.
    swedish people were invited over voluntarily. quite a lot of them joined the Waffen-SS

    • @DaisyFoko
      @DaisyFoko  Před 3 měsíci +1

      To address your first point first: you’re completely right!! I’m actually sort of kicking myself now for not making that more clear because that’s a super common scale flat argument facists DO make!
      To your second: since I made this video a while ago I’m not certain of this or not but I vaguely remember Mary Weber’s significance being that the author may have mentioned that as a point of inspiration but I might be misremembering tbh. the dehumanization of slaves went even further than "just" the name. slaves were often purposely split up and separated from other slaves of the same origin. they wanted thenew slaves to have a harder time communicating and identifying with their fellow slaves.
      it has caused a massive issue of uprooting amongst african american communities. that's largely why african americans created their own new culture(s). because they lost the reference to their own original culture, because they simply don't know what exact culture their ancestors were from.
      the "offred" thing is of course showing a sense of the person being property but it is also simply a form of dehumanisation.

    There were also forced marriage consumptions under the Khmer Rouge in Pol Pot’s Cambodia. Fascist and religious regimes are pronatalist because it’s inherent in their ideology; communist regimes (such as Ceaușescu’s Romania) are pronatalist because they constantly need more workers.

    How do you manage to criticise FGM without even mentioning Islam once? Name the problem. Gilead is based on a fictional Christian cult, but there is a very real religion that is used to justify this practice and this specific section was you listing off countries where it‘s still practiced. It‘s jarring to listen to this section, when you are deliberately (?) keeping quiet about the real world suffering millions of women and girls go through today.
    Idk if you‘re trying to be respectful or woke - just know that this does NOT help women in Islamic countries, it only helps the oppressive systems. (eg: a woman enslaved by ISIS was uninvited from speaking to Canadian college students, bc her criticism of ISIS *might* upset Muslims - literal sex slavery is sth women need to shut up about to accommodate a group of men who are magically exempt from any criticism. This is as anti-feminist as it gets. Refusing to confront the issues honestly in order to be polite or nice is extremely problematic)
    I hope this wasn‘t a deliberate omission on your part, but this was very concerning in a video about the real world horrors an author drew from to write about female oppression.

    • @DaisyFoko
      @DaisyFoko  Před rokem

      It was in no way a deliberate omission. THMT discusses a Christian authoritarian government which is why Christianity is discussed. There’s other fictional works that focus on Islam and other major religions contributions to oppression as well so if I was discussing one of those books I’d be focusing on whatever religion inspired them👍 I’m not a religious person so I don’t have any particular bias in any direction
