    BYD Atto 3 review: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
    Kia Niro EV review: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
    In the world of electric cars, the SUV sector is where it’s all happening. Whether you’re a fan or not, there’s no disputing the facts that family car buyers are continuing to choose mid-size SUVs in huge numbers.
    The Kia Niro EV has been a fixture in the electric car market for five years, wowing buyers with its remarkable efficiency, practicality and value for money. Completely refreshed last year, it remains one of the best all-rounders in the business and still represents a great buy.
    But the competition is now tougher than ever. BYD’s first offering for the UK market - the Atto 3 - hopes to take a bite out of Kia’s sales, and comes with a packed specification list and a decent range from its 60.5kWh battery pack.
    But which is the most deserving of your cash? Join Tom as he pitches the BYD Atto 3 and Kia Niro EV head-to-head to find out which is the more convincing package. Do you agree with Tom’s verdict? Which would you choose from these two? As always, we love to hear your opinion, so please let is know what you think in the comments below.

I test drove the BYD, a new Leaf and a regular hybrid Niro recently and as the owner of a previous generation Leaf I think the Atto will be my next car, it is great and it feels so much better built and with more flair than the others

    Well the review was a bit limited, I have both a BYD Atto 3 and a Tesla M3 and am in many ways most impressed with the BYD, it can tow (in AUS), it has the sunshade and sun roof, it has LFP battery that can be and should be charged to 100% whereas the Lithium Ion of the NERO is recommended to generally be charged to 80% and not to run flat. Its adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist is equal to the Tesla, The difference between ECO and sport are significant (we use Sport all the time), the regen braking has several levels and whilst the highest level is not one pedal driving per the Tesla it is not far off and when the brake is applied light to medium the deceleration is all regen. And really the so oft repeated negative/ blah comment re the upholstery style of the BYD is unfortunate. Some like me, really like it as it throws out the blandness of the me too style of so many other new car offerings. The longer we have the have the BYD the more I like it. And I am not negative to Kia, they have made some fantastic cars that I have been brand loyal to for some 8 years with a Sorrento Platinum and a Stinger GT that got traded to the BYD and the Tesla.

      Yeah, I got the atto 3 first then got the model y, about 4 months apart.
      Same, the “hi BYD” function is smarter than Tesla, I prefer it’s Apple CarPlay, I drive in sport all the time as well. Only down side is it’s pretty compact and how the menu system works is too complex.
      Tesla is great, more power but I drive in chill mode all the time, lots more storage, lots after market cosmetic to play with. However I hate their native navigation logic and they won’t do Apple CarPlay; paid $82k for Tesla, $52k for BYD.
      We still have both cars, I consider BYD is priced to sell well, it’s proven reliability in overseas market. Will not consider Korean & Japanese EV at this stage as their R&D is in ICE; European is not even close being a competitor in regards of EV at all. The mrs like the new MG convertible design, I’ll sell my Merc to buy that when it comes out. Would love to get Nio for kids but they don’t sell in Australia.

  • @ricosun
    @ricosun Před rokem +194

    The most important feature of an electric car should be its battery. And BYD has a way better LFP battery than the Nira's Lithium-ion. LFP battery are less prone to combustion making it much safer, and can last 5 times longer than Lithium-ion batteries. So if priced the same, the sensible choice should be BYD.

    • @somerealrandomguy
      @somerealrandomguy Před 11 měsíci +9

      LFP is Lithium-ion, you probably meant to say NMC which is the other Lithium-ion battery chemistry. KIA Niro use NMC which is lighter (more kWh/kg so less weight), more performance but less charging cycles (500 - 2,000 cycles for NMC vs 3,000 - 10,000 cycles for LFP) and as you put it less prone to self-combustion (will still thermal runaway, just much less chance).

    • @somerealrandomguy
      @somerealrandomguy Před 11 měsíci +14

      In Australia there's a massive price difference with the KIA Niro on similar price to a Model Y ($70,000 AUD) whereas the BYD Atto 3 is $51,500 AUD. This translate to around 9,500 GBP hence the Atto 3 is current 2nd/3rd best selling EV here (last month it beats the Model 3 and only lose out to Model Y but on total 2023 sales it's still behind the Model 3 & Y).

    I can't believe in the UK how the price of both vehicles is so close when in Australia the Atto 3 is considerably cheaper which makes it a no brainer. There's no angle on the drivers screen either in the Aus model. Because of the price being so close I can understand why they went for the Niro EV. Shame they didn't talk about the battery tech because because the Atto 3 is more superior especially if you're planing on keeping the vehicle for a long time! LFP can expect more than twice the number of charging cycles and you can charge to 100% with no fear of damaging the battery. Just like how people charge their mobile phone. Cheers.

    Great report. We have both in Australia and luckily we get the 12" screen in the Atto3 which is excellent and unobtrusive in portrait.
    In Australia the top spec Atto3 is $55000 or £29000 equivalent drive away but then gets State Government rebates of $3k to $6k.
    The Kia with similar equipment sells for $73k or £39k both ineligible for rebates as over $69k.
    The Kia is virtually same price as a Tesla Model Y!
    So Kia is not selling well. It is slower by 0.4 seconds 0-100kph has a 30l bigger boot but that ugly C pillar looks tacky. The nearest competitor to the Atto3 in Australia for price is the MG ZS EV which is $5k cheaper (£3k), slower and very dated.
    We bought the Atto3 after comparing with Tesla Y too but the Tesla is better but not $23k better!
    Atto3 is 3rd best selling EV in Australia behind the Tes 3/Y. No surprise as it is a great package.

      I also bought the BYD. You can add to features a blade battery that is far superior to Kia's and all others. Not only is it safer, but it doesn't degrade when you go from 1% to 100% like other EV's do. You can do it as often as you like, so your effective range is greater. While the battery tips the scales, the BYD is not without minor niggles. Some things just don't work on the infotainment side, and the Chinese satnav is absolutely crazy. Taxi drivers take more direct routes. I hope Android Auto arrives soon, but my wife's phone, though paired, hardly ever connects. Mine is fine, so it must not like her brand. I've had one of the old shape e-Niro since March 2019, one of the first off the boat here in France. It has been a great car to own and faultless during 80,000 km. The problem here is pricing. The Niro EV, along with the Megane e-tech Renault are in the €42K - €48K price ranges, whereas ICE equivalents like the Qashqai, VW T-Roc, Peugeot 3008 are in the low to mid €30K's....Sooner or later EV's have to price match ICE, battery prices are now below $100/kWh and production volumes are rising so...no excuse for the extra €10K. If BYD really want to make an impression and disrupt the market they should be pitching against those ICE cars, not the Kia Niro EV which is way too expensive. BYD may be a new brand to Europeeans but check out some videos of them being used as taxis in China....they make their own batteries, the blade and some of these things have already clocked up over half a million km.

      I wouldn't describe a Kia e-Niro or Niro Electric as huge. It's about the same size as a 3 series BMW at most (albeit hatch body style and slightly taller). If you want a smaller version of the same thing the Kona is what you're after, same underpinnings and slightly smaller - that's down in Golf territory.

Well, I'm watching this from Australia and I checked the local prices... The Atto 3 Extended Range (60kWh) is $A51K. The Niro S is $A65,300 (GT is $A72,100. Both come with the 64.8kWh battery). At current exchange rates that's £27K for the Atto 3 vs £34,600 for the Niro S...

    The lady was much more even handed in her approach, the guy spent half an hour confirming his original prejudices. He may be right but his lack of objectivity devalued his conclusion. Neither reviewer emphasized the most important point of all which is the fact that the Blade batteries in the BYD are superior. Superior enough that Tesla are buying them. However the service network of the BYD is not yet well developed and that is a very important minus. The BYD is heavier despite the lighter batteries and the interior noise of the Kia indicates that some of that extra weight is in sound dampening.
    The charging point at the front of the KIA is dumb. Front and rear minor bingles are the commonest of minor accidents and it would only take a tiny biff to put the charging point and the Kia out of service altogether. I have driven a BYD but only in China where the local tyres were woeful, I assume that the tyres on the test vehicle were reasonable but no comment was made! The Atto 3 is too expensive, I suspect that this is because BYD will use the BYD Dolphin whose arrival in UK is imminent as the price killer. It has the technical attributes of the Atto 3 but at a price at or less than the MG 4. Incidentally the Atto 3 is much less in Oz than it is in the UK so there is clearly room to move on that front.
    My conclusions: they are both good cars, both are over priced, it might be good strategy to wait and see what BYD's overall pricing strategy is when the Dolphin is released.
    The presenters are entertaining/engaging, but both perhaps need a bit of time back at school on the technical fundamentals of EV batteries/ charging issues/ control systems. Taking half+ of the video on style/appearances is a bit of a giveaway.

    LFP battery and vehicle price was the deal sealer for me.
    The LFP Blade battery is environmentally more sustainable to produce, more easily recyclable at end of use, battery proven to be more fire resistant with less degradation with real world use over time. Admittedly DC charging speed of KIA better as Atto maxes out at 80 kWh however Hyundai / Kia LG chem batteries and BMS systems are still highly prone to on going recalls and warranty issues.
    If the biggest pure electric car company in the world Tesla has gone to LFP batteries because they are cheaper safer and more environmentally sustainable then you know they are a good thing.
    Also in Australia Atto can tow up to 750 kg braked load and you can put 25 kgs on the roof racks.
    6 year warranty on car 8 year warranty on battery here.
    For an SUV it’s got good efficiency mine averages 15kwh per 100km at highway speeds of around 100kmh, has excellent HVAC and also in Oz it’s heaps cheaper than the base model Kia,

    In the UK, Kia has an extensive dealer network, BYD has just four showrooms, so not expecting great back-up if any problems occur.

    Does the Atto 3 have an app to check state of charge, find your car, control climate control etc with your mobile phone? I prefer MG ZS with iSMART phone app. Big plus!

    In Australia the Kia is 67k AUD while the BYD is 48k
    Strange how Kia charges so much here that they won’t sell (treating it as a compliance car no doubt) while BYD charges so much over there.

      I still remember when a warranty of 1yr on any car was standard. Any warranty is only as good as the manufacturers word and interpretation.

    Which car manufacturer sells more electric vehicles ?

    • @lukeecle117
      @lukeecle117 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Global electric vehicle sales market share : Q1 2022- Q1 2023:
      BYD 21%
      Tesla 16%
      Volkswagen 7%
      Others 56%
      China is, by far the largest EV market, with 59 % of global EV sales in 2022. Their role as the largest EV production base is even stronger, with 6,7 million units, 64 % of global volume, made in China. Nearly 580 000 EVs were exported from China, most of them (407k) by Western brands. The largest exporters were Tesla, SAIC, Dacia, Polestar, Volvo, Lynk & Co, BMW and BYD. All others exported below 10 000 units each.
      Robust increases of EV sales enabled nearly all OEMs to grow their sales in 2022. Global EV deliveries increased by +55 % y/y in total; OEMs with higher growth have increased their share in the EV sector.
      BYD sold over 3 times as many BEVs+PHEVs compared to 2021, by boosting sales of existing models, successfully introducing new models and by entirely focusing production and sales on BEVs and PHEVs. Non-chargeable variants were phased out, ending in April 2022. BYD is now the largest maker of PHEVs and moved from rank #3 in 2021 to #1 for BEVs & PHEVs combined.
      Tesla leads global sales of BEVs by a large margin, with a share of 17 % in all BEVs sold worldwide. Year-on-year growth was +40 %, less than for the sector, but from a high base.
      The VW Group increased EV sales by just +10 %, staying flat in Europe compared to last year; BEVs gained, while PHEVs lost. Growth in China was +44 % y/y and +18 % in North America. The most popular EVs from the group were the VW ID.4, the ID.3, the Skoda Enyaq and the Audi Q4 e-tron, all of them BEVs and all MEB based.
      The Wuling Mini EV has reached it's sales peak; GM gained only +13 % for that reason. Excluding the Mini EVs, GM's combined growth for EVs was +68 %.
      Stellantis gained EV sector share in Europe and USA but with a small presence in China, Stellantis could not participate in the high growth there. The +34 % volume gain is still better than for many other western OEM.

    22:30 Towing. Absolutely. That's one thing which I want when I replace my Leaf. No towing option rules out the Atto 3 for me. I'd like a bit more than the 750Kg limit which the Niro offers.

    On a 2 year salary sacrifice deal with Octopus the Atto 3 Design is about £80 per month cheaper in your pocket than a Niro EV3 which is significant. I want to test drive the Atto 3 but at the moment the nearest dealer is over 100 miles away! What happens if the car needs repairing? Questions I will be speaking to Octopus Leasing about shortly.

    Kia Niro hands down if price is similar. In Australia, Niro costs ridiculously more expensive so it's no brainer. Atto 3 wins in Australia. I am Korean and had a loan of Niro for 3 days in Korea and it drives better than my Model Y.😅
