Great tips. I would like to add that for struggling readers, adding in some word building activities with letter tiles can really help. For some kids it's easier to also start with building words... Take three letter tiles R, T, A, draw three line on a page, and ask the child "what is the first sound in /rrraaattt/ for "rat." The child says /r/ and moves the R tile to the first line. This continues until they've spelled the word RAT. This activity teaches phonemic awareness and letter sound correspondence at the same time.
The Reading Simplified blog has some good articles about this.
I just wanted to share a comment about the how to teach your child to read video. It was amazing. I was sad to see the comments off on it. that video is the most realistic home schooling video I’ve seen. It showed the child learning and what it truly looks like. Had me clapping when she got the word’s right. I was impressed when she was able to read the word LITTLE. It was an amazing video and thank you for sharing it with us 🥰.
I share your channel with everyone I know relatives, student teachers, grandparents and parents thank you so very much 💝

Hello, love your hard work, but when will you start a tutor classes .
I am a student teacher for foundation phase dis is a great channel for me
I have a notebook ready every time I see your videos.
No but really, you need to do a Patreon for more in depth lessons/material.
I’m not trying to step on toes. I do appreciate and absolutely love the free content though. It is a blessing honestly. But maybe you can offer some other extras on Patreon too.
-disregard lol I watched the whole video and see that you have a website.
Blending is EXACTLY what I’m having trouble with.
My son is 3yrs 5 months, he knows his letter and sounds but blending isn’t going as fast as I’d expected 🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️
I’m frustrated 😔
Ah! I should have put they may just be too young. Sometimes with 3 year olds and blending, if you just wait a year, they'll pick it up. But I know most of us don't want to hear that!
@@AkeebaMaze Wait isn’t the word I want to hear indeed but it maybe in his best interest, so I’ll keep trying, whiles making it fun and hope he picks up.
Thank you for replying.
@@gerriprowell9238 that's a very fine line there, you don't want to push reading - especially with a 3 year old!
Wish u good health and ever flowing prosperity.
Love this video very informative. I need help with two things. 1, my daughter she sounds out the 2 letters and three letters words well. But when the get bigger. She loses patience and wants to say the whole word.and not sound it out. Help here
Also can you do a math video please
Hello Akeeba
please send me what you use for your children
but not the white board
Do you have any tips for assisting my nine year old with reading difficulty?
Hi Akeeba, do you offer private classes?
i have been following all your video on reading. i have a seven year old who struggles with reading. i think alot of the times he guess because he can look that the pictures.are the any reading books that dont have pictures. i would really like to help him be more a fluent reader. thank you.
The link in your description wouldn't load. Upon lookin at the address, it has an extra m at the end.
Thank you thank you thank you. I was a little discouraged because I tested my children on reading and blending today and they didn’t do too well. I’m sure this will help. I am subscribed to abc mouse already do you think that’s good or is homer better?
I had that but my daughter wasn't so much interested...but I think I will give this one a try
Does abc mouse have blending practice like this? My kids also used abc mouse, I love it for the testing feature.
I’m so old were due I find the affiliate link for Homer
Just sign does it have an app that can lead straight to the program
Is there going to be more lessons?
I wonder if Lil' Phyllis Meets Her Book Fair Fairy is a good read for young readers?
I just wanted to let you know that your link to the Homer app is broken!
How much practise is required? Like how many minutes/hours a day? I have twins, four years old. My son has been blending since he was 2.5 years old and has been reading since 3years old. Though he sometimes guesses longer words. My daughter, not so much. We have been working on blending words now but we may not be practising everyday. Please advise if tou can. Also, if you have children with different reading levels, how do you teach each without them disrupting each other?
With reading, you need to be doing that daily even multiple times daily. You can teach them separately, you only have two children so that shouldn't be difficult. You don't need to teach them together. If your child is guessing that is a problem, can they really read? I started informally teaching my daughter the alphabet at one and then letter sounds at two, at around four I started to teach more actively reading and we had books and I thought she knew how to read but she was smart enough to memorize whole books and did not know how to actually read. I was not practicing sounds enough and did not teach vowels for some reason.
If your child is guessing longer words, take an unfamiliar book or just write on a board words and ask him to read to see if it he really can.
Hi Akeeba how are you doing now, I hope you are doing well,
I need your help. My husband and I will have custody of our granddaughter and she's 4. We don't pick her up until Nay 5, but still no time mentally to prep for teaching. Not sure if she REALLY knows her alphabet...., but we want to help her learn. Please share with me the first steps to help her learn. Thank you in advance
May 5th ..
Hello Sis' 👋 How long have you been homeschooling?
Hi! About 4 years.
How does Homer compare with Hooked on Phonics? I use Hooked on Phonics for my kid but is Homer better?
I didn't know Hooked on Phonics had an app, so I cannot say. But I think Hooked on Phonics is a full program, correct? Like, you can get the books and stuff in the mail. Homer is an app for practice and learning.
@@AkeebaMaze yes it is a full program and they have an app and workbook subscription. So far I haven't seen any blending specific activity on it, so I was intrigued by your description of the Homer app.
Do you help kids has tutor I'm in California
No, but I'm putting together a list of resources.
@@AkeebaMaze okay and thank you because my son is having a hard time and he also has an IEP
I don't have money
This so helpful. Thank you
