    Great tips. I would like to add that for struggling readers, adding in some word building activities with letter tiles can really help. For some kids it's easier to also start with building words... Take three letter tiles R, T, A, draw three line on a page, and ask the child "what is the first sound in /rrraaattt/ for "rat." The child says /r/ and moves the R tile to the first line. This continues until they've spelled the word RAT. This activity teaches phonemic awareness and letter sound correspondence at the same time.
    The Reading Simplified blog has some good articles about this.

    I just wanted to share a comment about the how to teach your child to read video. It was amazing. I was sad to see the comments off on it. that video is the most realistic home schooling video I’ve seen. It showed the child learning and what it truly looks like. Had me clapping when she got the word’s right. I was impressed when she was able to read the word LITTLE. It was an amazing video and thank you for sharing it with us 🥰.

    How much practise is required? Like how many minutes/hours a day? I have twins, four years old. My son has been blending since he was 2.5 years old and has been reading since 3years old. Though he sometimes guesses longer words. My daughter, not so much. We have been working on blending words now but we may not be practising everyday. Please advise if tou can. Also, if you have children with different reading levels, how do you teach each without them disrupting each other?

    • @ASmith-jn7kf
      @ASmith-jn7kf Před 2 lety +2

      With reading, you need to be doing that daily even multiple times daily. You can teach them separately, you only have two children so that shouldn't be difficult. You don't need to teach them together. If your child is guessing that is a problem, can they really read? I started informally teaching my daughter the alphabet at one and then letter sounds at two, at around four I started to teach more actively reading and we had books and I thought she knew how to read but she was smart enough to memorize whole books and did not know how to actually read. I was not practicing sounds enough and did not teach vowels for some reason.

    • @ASmith-jn7kf
      @ASmith-jn7kf Před 2 lety +2

      If your child is guessing longer words, take an unfamiliar book or just write on a board words and ask him to read to see if it he really can.
