Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

Idk how many cats try to keep warm in engines and have their tails and lives cut short every year but it’s got to be a LOT. You, casually letting Kelly check it out without instilling some kind of fear in her and making her get down immediately is mind boggling to me. That’s literally where cats go to keep warm in cold weather and expire when the engine starts.

Emi, that's a VERY good idea. I did some research about which parts are most likely to stop working when you're out in the bush. My van is a 2003 Ford E-350 with 5.4 gas engine. The most common ones that die are: #1. - The alternator!! #2. The Starter #3. The serpentine belt. So I have a tote in the very back with a new starter, alternator, and a new serpentine belt. I also have a fairly well-stocked tool box "just in case." I also have a gallon of anti-freeze, a gallon of high mileage oil since my van has over 400k on it at this time. However, I think that I'm also going to add a new thermostat to the box "just in case." And I have a whole collection of different fuses and relays. And a repair manual in the console. :) I know you have several power banks, so you might also add a small battery charger as well. I have had to charge my battery using my Jackery and battery charger several times over the last 3 years. I don't have that problem now, since I had a battery disconnect switch installed in my van last fall. When I go to bed, I disconnect the starting battery, and run my lights with my Jackery.
