Me too. So many great lines in this. I just love the internal rhyme in "Romeo? Oh you know, I used to have a scene with him." And this line always made me smile: "All I do is miss you, and the way we used to be, All I do is keep the beat, and bad company." I don't know if that expression (to "keep bad company" - to hang out with the "wrong crowd" so to speak) is common anymore but I just like how the word "keep" is kept away from the "bad company" so that even though he's saying yes he is keeping bad company, he's being subtle about it. He misses her.... (and oh yeah by the way he's out there having a good time...) Finally, there is an Indigo Girls version this song that is quite good and makes clear what the actual tune is. (Don't get me wrong, I like Mark's vocals too but once I heard the Indigo Girls version, I could sing along with Mark in the car way better than before!)

@@craigcoleman967 As great and impactful Rain on the Scarecrow is, it's primarily aimed at the struggle of the farmer in this country with strong words and visuals in the music video to support it. As where Telegraph Road can be any rundown city or town that time has moved on from. Its emotion is driven by the music being played and you supply your own images from your personal experiences making it, in my opinion, a far more personal song to the listener.

@@SilverBoxStudios I love both songs and they're obviously very different stories but a lot of sentiments are mirrored. For me it screams, "how could something that started with so much promise be allowed to decay to this?". Whether it's the farms of the US mid-west, the coal mines of England's north or any other frontier, they are both stark accounts of our ability to rape and plunder for our own greedy needs then to cut and run and move on to the next goldmine. I find them both very personal accounts. I don't have a farming background but I feel the pain in JCM's words.

Nice job! Keep up this journey... had me cracking up with the "mellow" reference...
Just wait... I'm looking forward to it.
    My Dire Straits story...
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 PM... A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show
I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

Also, check out tracks from the underappreciated Love Over Gold album - Industrial Disease and Telegraph Road are awesome, and the production on that album was beautifully done. Knopfler's fingerstyle guitar playing is pretty unique in rock music. Offhand, Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is the only other major player that I can think of that uses this style.

Anyway, Tunnel of Love from the same album (Making Movies) is a must from these guys - actually the whole album bar the awful closer (Les Boys), also Telegraph Road from the follow-up is the definition of epic, most will tell you to do the Alchemy Live version of that one, but studio or live it's great either way (unlike Money For Nothing, which I never need to hear again, so please don't react to that...I beg you...hahaha!).

Alchemy Live (a double album), which includes tracks from before their most successful album Brothers in Arms, and On The Night which includes tracks from Brothers in Arms and their final studio album On Every Street. Both include performances of Romeo and Juliet. Both albums are stunning!
Other great live performances you can find on CZcams include their headline turn at the Nelson Mandela Birthday Tribute at Wembley Stadium in 1988 and their set at the Knebworth '90 concert, both which include a little known guitarist by the name of Eric Clapton playing rhythm to Knopfler's lead (although Eric does get a chance to throw in a solo or two as well). Knopfler returned the favour on Clapton's anniversary tour.

Tunnel of Love is a wonderful cinematic song off of the same album. The name of this album is Making Movies. All of the songs on this album present a cinematic quality that you could see through the lyrics and hear in the music. Try Once Upon a Time in the West.

Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of the past 50 years.
This was when Mark's brother left the band and they were a trio ( guitar/bass/drums)
The album that this song comes from, " Making Movies" is a masterclass in the "clean tone" era of M.K's style and his songwriting continued to raise the bar.

You have to do the live version of Sultans of Swing. The guitar solo at the end is off the hook.

A personal favorite of many is "Tunnel of Love". The last third of the song is an extended crescendo-ing Knopfler guitar solo that moved someone to observe "Knopfler doesn't play guitar solos. He writes stories".

Read a bunch of titles of Elvis hits then play “ “Calling Elvis “ by Dire Straits, the lyrics are almost all compiled of Elvis songs. Really kinda cool.

Knopfler's two other most played songs are Brother's in Arms and Piper To The End. The later was written to commemorate is uncle a British Piper who died in the D-Day invasion. If you've liked Sultan's and Romeo and Juliet it's hard to see you disliking these two. Mark has written dozens maybe hundreds of songs and someday he may write a bad one but not yet. Sure some are liked better more or less by different people but they are all good.

Skate away might be my favorite song from them. The bittersweet fade out guitar on this song is my favorite part. Knopflers solo work is beautiful and relaxing. Great Sunday AM music. Try My Shangrila.

I suggest "Wild West End" from the same album as "Sultans of Swing". It's another people-watching song similar to the back story of Sultans of Swing. Very mellow, but underrated tune.

Plenty of gems in the Straits canon, but I can't recommend the dark drama of "Private Investigations" enough. I love "Telegraph Road" (from the same album, 'Love Over Gold') as well. And like another commenter I would also add what I think is Mark's last great song for the band, "On Every Street."

Their music was great storytelling . Very Poetic...I was never a Huge fan of that particular song, but they were a great band. If you want to hear a really beautiful tune try the song .."Why Worry" on the Brothers in Arms record. It has a fantastic melody , and some remarkable, moody Guitar work.

Man I love how this guy plays guitar. Although the song sounds simple, it's hard to play and sing at the same time. If you are thinking of your next DS song. Go with "Brothers In Arms". When I first started playing guitar, BIA was a must learn for any aspiring guitar player. Fifteen years later, I'm still working on the nuances and feeling Mark plays with.
